The Poets Screamed For Us
fifteen
The air was crisp and the sun was just barely starting to set. The doorbell was going off every thirty minutes, and Frank pulled himself up off of the couch to hand out candy to early trick or treaters. He figured that since Gerard had something planned for him later that night, he would at least hand out candy to a few people before they were busy.
Gerard still wouldn’t tell Frank what the surprise was and it was driving him crazy. He was both excited, and very nervous.
Frank made his way to he and Gerard’s room to see if he was done putting his costume on yet. Frank was going as Frankenstein and Gerard was keeping his costume a secret.
Frank walked to the bathroom door and knocked lightly. “Are you almost ready?” He asked.
There was a shuffling sound on the other side of the door, and a small “Not yet ” before Frank left and resided to the kitchen to make himself some tea.
He had just finished and was now sipping on the finished product when he heard footsteps coming down the hall. He set his cup down and turned around. His eyes nearly bulged out of his head at what he saw.
Gerard was standing there in a black miniskirt, a black lace button up, fishnets, and red high heels. He had a black beanie on, and his makeup was done, with some lipstick.
“You like it?” He asked, nervously.
Frank coughed a bit before answering. “Uh, yeah. I um, you look great, Gee.” He said slowly.
Frank walked over to Gerard and gently kissed him, almost as though he could break if he touched him too much.
He let his hands roam down to his hips, and pulled him closer, deepening the kiss. Frank was fully prepared to do more, but Gerard pulled away. “Frankie you’re gonna ruin my makeup.” He said with a giggle.
“Now come on, I have a surprise for you.” Gerard pulled Frank’s car keys out from his back pocket and grabbed his hand, leading him out to the car.
They both piled in, and Gerard started the car.
Frank couldn’t take his eyes off of Gerard. He watched every little thing he did. The way his mouth moved when he sang along to Bowie on the radio, the way he turned the steering wheel, and the way he tapped his fingers on it to the beat of the music.
“You’re staring.” Gerard said without looking at him.
“You’re so beautiful.”
The look Gerard gave him almost made Frank’s heart break. He looked at him like he was so thankful for that small statement. Almost like no one has ever told that before.
“We’re here.” Gerard parked the car in an empty parking lot in front of an empty field.
They both got out of the car, and Frank looked around.
“Where are we?” He asked.
“Where are we, you ask? Well, how about this, Where aren’t we? We aren’t anywhere at all, Frankie.”
Frank raised his eyebrow at him.
“This field, right here. This field is going to be our home. We are going to build a house here together, adopt a few kids, and maybe even have a few friends over on friday nights. You’re standing on your future Frank.
Frank looked around at the vast land. It was on top a hill, and if you looked out, you could see all of the lights of the city. There was a few trees here and there, and it was an overall very beautiful area.
“I bought this land a few days ago. I know you really don’t like where we live, so yeah. I figured we could just build a place you would like.”
Frank suddenly became very aware.
“Gerard how did you do this? We can’t afford it. Your treatment…”
Gerard waved his hand dismissively.
“Frank, I never told you much about my family, did I?”
“Nothing at all, Gerard.”
“Well, they sort of have a lot of money. Well, my mom does, or did.” Gerard said slowly.
“Well, how did you get it?” Frank asked him hesitantly.
“She died, Frank. A few months ago. I just inherited it all. That’s why I wanted to do this. I need something.. permanent.”
“Gerard I’m so sorry. Why didn’t you say anything?”
“She never liked me. In fact, she hated my guts. I left because she wasn’t sure if she wanted to deal with me having cancer. It’s okay, though. I’m very happy now.” Gerard said with a bright smile.
“Thank you so much for doing this. For making this become a possibility.” Frank said motioning to the general area.
“We have a future because of you.”
