The Fabulous Killjoys

Party Poison's POV

*Better Living Industries--Have you smiled today?* I was watching a commercial for some big company on the television when I turn off the TV and decide that it's time for bed. I was getting pretty tired. I stare at my warm, comfortable bed as my eyes droop further. I hop in and surround myself in the warmth of the blankets. I sigh sleepily and drift off to sleep. The world seemed perfect at that point.

* * * * *

I woke to the sound of pounding at the door. I stared at my clock. It was three in the morning! I opened my eyes and saw Mom opening the door. I know, it's weird that I still live with my mom, but with the drop in the economy and all, I can hardly afford a place of my own. Behind the door, three men dressed in formal suits stood perfectly still.

"Yes?" Mom asked, angry that she had been awoken so early.
The man standing in the middle stepped forward. "Good morning ma'am. We are from Better Living Industries. Can we have a moment to talk with you and you're family.
"It's three in the fucking morning!" was all my mom could say.
"I am well aware of that," the man replied. "We are so very sorry for the inconvenience, but we are running on a tight schedule. We must give every resident of Battery City their Better Living Health Vaccinations.
"So why can't that wait until later in the morning?" Mom asked, annoyed.
The man seemed to have a legit answer. "With the deadly virus going around, there may not be enough time until all of Battery City catches it and becomes severely infected.
"What virus?" Mom asked. "Surely I would have been informed if there was a deadly virus."
"We have just found out about it last night in our research lab," the man answered confidently, staring mom strait in the eye. "But it must be kept on the down-low until we treat everyone with vaccines. We wouldn't want anybody to panic"
"Fine, just make it quick," Mom snapped.

Mom called me and my brother into the living room. I emerged out from behind the corner of wall I was hiding behind, and my brother ran out of his room, still struggling to put on his clothes.

"Boys, these kind men are from Better Living Industries are here to give us vaccines for the deadly virus," Mom explained sarcastically,
"But-" my brother began.
Mom cut him off. "This man right here can explain everything to you."

The man in the black suit then began to explain to my brother what he said to my mom. The three of us stared at the three men suspiciously, then let them into our house. A man from the back of the trio pulled out three syringes from a black bag strapped around his shoulder. They were filled with a yellowish liquid. However, as I looked closer, I could make out a small metallic green object floating in the liquid. I then realized that this wasn't a vaccination. I remembered what the small object was and suddenly had no trust in the men whatsoever.

"Oh, hell no!" I screamed at the man holding the syringes as I slapped them out of his hand.

The man stared at me, shocked. I grabbed my younger brother's arm and dragged him into my room, telling him to jump out of the window and make a run for it.

"Wait for me at the city's boundaries," I called after him as the men started pounding at my locked door. "If I don't show up, just keep running."

The men found their way into my room. I was surrounded. Mom stared, horrified, in the back. The first man pulled out a white and black Bl/Ind. laser gun and pointed it strait at my. My mom screamed. I stood, frozen in fear. The man shot at my leg. Thinking quickly, I dogged the beam and grabbed his gun. I held in my power now, and without thinking, I shot the man directly in the chest. Both my mother's and my eyes widened. I shot someone. I'm a murderer. I'm going to be given the death penalty for this. The two other men stared at me. One of them advanced in my direction, so I shot him in the leg. I gasped. I did it again. I shot someone. But it felt good. The man whom I had shot limped away, leaving one man left. Being the coward that he is, he ran out of my room and out the front door. I gave my mom a sorrowful stare before hopping out of my bedroom window to meet with my brother. I just couldn't risk putting my mother or myself in any more danger. I had to flee. For the better.
