Endless Night Time Sky

A Strange Beginning

Gerard’s pov.
I was just looking out the backseat window when the first raindrops started to fall. In just seconds, the large drops were hitting my window with small thuds. Thud thud thud thud thud. It was dark outside, even though it couldn’t be later than seven. I was not bothered enough to pic up my phone and check the time. We had been driving for about an hour; I left home when the sun was pretty much gone. I liked the weather here. Or, I would have. According to the weather forecast, it was going to be lots of rain, which I used to like. I liked storms, because it meant that even the sky could be angry. And it was never any sun. I didn’t use to like sunshine. Now, I would give a lot to feel it warm my skin again, just one more time. The dark weather felt forced now. Fucking vampire. The last days I had felt less and less heat. I wasn’t cold; I just didn’t feel the temperature anymore. And of course, the sunlight had started to hurt. For every day that passed and went, the sun burned more and more. So I stayed indoors, slept during the day, mostly.

At least the weather reflected my mood. It wasn’t stormy, it simply was sad. I was sad. I was sitting in the backseat with Mikey, my younger brother. Mom was driving, dad in the passenger seat. It would be a while until I would see them again, so I had expected lots of conversation. Instead, we sat in silence. A dark silence, filled with the knowledge that a living corpse was sitting in their car. My parents took it pretty well, but I know that now were scared of me. Mikey, on the other hand, had only supported me. He was the one who found me anyways. How I was supposed to survive without him, I did not understand. It was thanks to him that I was heading to this school thing. It was literally called Oswald’s Academy for Talented Youngsters. And it was a fucking castle. Are you damn serious, because, sure, that did not seem suspicious at all. A huge old medieval boarding school for “talented youngsters”. It sounded like something from the X-Men. And what were those talents? Sleeping upside down? Finding the best spot to ...drink from someone? I shuddered at the though. The thought of blood still disgusted me.
Thud, thud, thud, thud, thud went the rain. We were driving on a bumpy road in the woods, and everything was dark now. There were no streetlights or anything, so the only light source came from the car’s front and back. We had been driving in the woods for a while now, so it seemed that this academy was pretty far away from the public and all the curious humans. Maybe it didn’t hurt that it had a stupid name.

The car passed a turn, and the trees stopped. The road continued on through a huge meadow, which I assumed were green, though it was hard to tell in the darkness. Although it wasn’t completely dark (or maybe my eyes had better nigh vision), and I could see that the road ended in front of a huge gray building. Light streamed from some of the windows, and on the ground around the stone building, small lights lighted up the front.
"Oh, look at that!" Mikey breaking the deafening silence. "It’s so huge..." I could sense a tinge of excitement in his voice. It was kind of ironic how he was obsessed with vampires. He was staring up at the tall stone castle, obviously in awe. A tiny smile that didn’t reach my eyes showed on my face, and I nodded once. Yes, I had to admit it looked pretty cool. Mikey grinned to me, saying
"It looks awesome. I’m sure it will be super cool to live there!" He was obviously trying to comfort me, which I loved him for. And it actually helped a little bit, it always did. I looked over at him.
"Yeah, I guess so", I mumbled.
We were coming up to the castle, a gatekeeper opening and letting us through the tall iron gate which surrounded the school. The academy was even bigger up close, stones upon stones upon stones. We were maybe a hundred meters away, and it was huge, like, really huge. I felt like I was entering Hogwarts, or, a gothic version of Hogwarts. A lot of sweet looking cars and motorcycles were parked by the side, and mom sat our car there too. All four of us taking some of my luggage, we walked the short way up to the main entrance, where a woman stood, waiting for us I think.
"Good evening, Sir", she beamed at my dad. He gave her a stiff smile. "The Way family, I suppose?" She looked at my mother, who gave her a small nod. I realized that I was actually terrified, this being the moment when I entered a place which was to become my home for the next couple years. I looked up on the woman, and watched as her attention went to me.
"Ah," she smiled at me, her golden eyes glinting with warmth and understanding. "Our new student! Gerard, right?" She tilted her head, emphasizing the question. I gulped and nodded.
"Just leave your bags here, Mr. Way, and they will be brought up to your room." The huge wooden doors with flowery engravings opened, and yellow light streamed from the inside. - Just come with me, and we will get you established. She smiled again, the light making her sharp canines shine, and gestured for us to walk in to the strange building.
I shuddered, and took a step over the threshold and into my new home.
