Maybe This Could Work...

Chapter 22 - It Snows In Hell

It was maybe two weeks or so before the Christmas holidays. Gerard’s self-afflicted wounds had healed, leaving behind small scars. We slowly, but surely returned to our normal sexual routine, and everything seemed to be back in its place. It all seemed to be perfect.
Almost every morning, Gerard and I would wake up together, got ready and headed off to school. After getting home, we would usually order something to eat, or Gee would make something from scratch, then we would to our work (Gee would be in his study and I’d be in our room, just so we absolutely did our work and not get distracted by the other’s presence), then we would cuddle on the couch, but always ended up having either hot and nasty sex or we would just toy with each other. At the end of the day, we would fall asleep in each other’s arm. Perfect!

This morning started off like all the others. I got up, making sure I didn’t wake up Gerard, because that day he started later than usual. I got dressed; skinny jeans, t-shirt and a long sleeved shirt on top, hoodie and adding just a smidge of eyeliner and putting on a pair of winter boots.
It had gotten drastically cold in the past few days, announcing that winter had finally come.
After getting dressed, I quietly walked downstairs, grabbing a quick breakfast, and pouring steaming hot coffee in one of Gerard’s travel mugs and putting in my school bag.
I put on my coat and fingerless skeleton gloves (which by the way are not the best choice for winter) and place one of Gerard woollen hats on top of my head. I stepped out the door, earphones in hand to put them in my ears, when I looked up.
I was met by the best surprise winter could ever bring.
Everything was completely white. And when I say everything, I do mean everything. The streets, the lawn, the roofs of houses, everything covered in white fluff. The streets of New Jersey had turned in to a cold, white wonderland.
Snow!
A wide smile grew on my face, my school bag falling down beside my legs. It had actually snowed during the night! I immediately ran back inside dropping my coat along the way, and bursting back in to mine and Gerard’s bedroom.
I jumped on the bed, making sure I didn’t jump on to Gerard, not wanting to hurt him, then not so gently shook him to wake him up, while still lightly bouncing on the bed.
“Gee, wake up!” I laughed. Gerard frowned, opening up one of his eyes to look at me.
“Please go away and let me sleep” he mumbled, his voice raspy.
“No, you gotta get up! Now!” I said, shaking him even harder.
“Frank, come on! I get to sleep longer once a week during work, please let me have this” he mumbled, pulling the covers over his head.
“Gerard, trust me! You need to see this!” I said, pulling the covers off of him, exposing his entire body that was covered only by his boxers (one of my favourite sights).
“Is the house burning down?” he asked, finally sitting up and giving me a very sleepy and annoyed look, his messy hair falling on to his face. He lazily blew the red locks of hair away from his slightly open eyes.
“Well no, but... this is better, trust me” I said, pressing a quick kiss to his lips, then taking his hand and dragging him to the bedroom window, listening to him produce annoyed voices. I pulled open the dark blue curtains, letting the white blinding light hit Gerard’s eyes. Gerard flinched at the light, covering his eyes with his hand and frowning. When he got used to it, he looked out the window.
His eyes grew wide, a big smile on his face and he gasped out a: “Woah”
“Told you” I said, raising my eyebrow at him, an all knowing look on my face.
“Jersey’s always so fucking beautiful in winter” Gerard breathed out.
“Yeah” I agreed, looking at the snowflakes falling down from the grey sky.
“Do you wanna build a snowman?” asked Gerard, looking down to me with the most childish, goofy smile I had ever seen. I grinned up at him. Then my look slipped to the alarm clock on the night stand.
“Maybe later, ‘cause I gotta get to school, otherwise I’m going to get detention” I sighed, taking a scarf from our closet.
“I’ll see you last period” Gerard smiled to me, giving me a kiss on my forehead, his arms snaking around my waist.
“Yeah, okay” I leaned in to his embrace, just enjoying his warmth against my body.
“Love you sweetheart” Gerard mumbled, his lips pressed against my hair.
“Love you too Gee” I said back. We shared one more quick kiss, before I headed back downstairs, putting my coat back on and picking up my school bag.
I walked in to the cold, white morning with a big smile curving my lips, as Iron Maiden blasted in to my ears.
I just loved winter (minus the cold). It was always the most beautiful time of the year, when everything seemed to have calmed down, became quieter than ever before during the year. As I walked to school, the snow crunching beneath my feet, I passed the local park. It was same park where Gerard had picked me up two months ago on that rainy day.
As I was passing it, I saw children playing on the snowed playground, their school teacher keeping a watchful eye on them. I watched those children playing in the snow, throwing snowballs at each other, trying their best to make a snowman, their shrieks and laughs echoing through the quiet winter morning. I saw a small boy, he was really small and a girl playing away from the rest, rolling around in snow, occasionally throwing a fistful of snow at each other, while laughing their asses off and calling each other weird names. They reminded me or Gina and I when we were kids, after we became best friend. When we actually met, we didn’t like each other; we pulled on each other’s hair, we fought a lot, physically and verbally, calling each other all sorts of bad words, I stole a lot of her cookies and she stole my juice box every single lunch time. We right down hated each other.
Well, until one day in December, when my mom and I were walking home from the grocery store. We had passed the same park and I asked my mom, if we could stay a little so I could play. She agreed. I ran to the slides and my mom went to the gazebo under which she could sit on, while still keeping an eye on me.
I climbed up the latter, all excited to be able to slide down the snow covered slid, when I tripped over something, landing straight on my face. When I finally got back on to my feet, I looked back, wanting to see what made me trip. I saw Gina, with her legs pulled up to her chest, her red cheeks stained with tears.
“I’m sorry” she quietly said, not even looking at me. Granted, we were both seven years old, but I still knew that when someone was sad and crying, you should not be mean to them what so ever, even if you don’t like that person. It was one of the things my mother thought me. I sat up, crossing my legs, not really caring that the floor was cold. I watched the crying girl in front of me with my head slightly tilt to the side and curious eyes.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
Gina finally looked at me, her eyes blown wide.
“Why do you care? You hate me?” she said, wiping the tears away with her glove covered hand.
“Yeah, but I still don’t want to see you upset” I said truthfully. She was my mortal enemy at the time, but seeing her so upset and in tears made something switch in my heart.
“So, tell me. Why are you so upset?” I asked again.
“You wouldn’t understand” she said.
“Try me” I smirked, trying to be all grown up and smart. She sighed, like she was calming herself down.
“One year ago, my mommy and daddy died”
My jaw dropped open, my eyes wide.
“I’m sorry” I said, knowing that whenever someone said that they had lost someone that you have to say that you’re sorry. And I really was. At the time, I just couldn’t imagine being without my parents.
She nodded, excepting my sorry.
“Well, where do you live now?” I wondered.
“Foster family. But it’s not fun” she said.
“Why not?” I kept being nosey.
“Because I live with four other kids, who are mean to me all the time and I have to share a bedroom with all of them” she explained.
“Must be awful”
“Yeah, it is” she confirmed. We were quiet after that.
“Frankie, honey! It’s time to go home!” my mom called from the gazebo.
“Coming!” I yelled back. I looked back at Gina.
“Hey, do you wanna come to my house, to hang out or something?” I asked her.
She looked up at me with a confused face.
“Why?” she asked.
“Cuz... I don’t want you to be alone” I said, giving her a smile.
She smiled back, then nodded.
“Come on!” I said to her. We slid down the slide, the laughter already beginning. Then we ran to my mom, who was already waiting on the sidewalk.
“Mom, can Gina come over?” I asked, with a big cheeky smile.
“Of course, she can even stay for dinner. Would you like that sweetie?” she asked Gina with a kind smile. Gina nodded, her smile growing by the second.
We practically ran the whole way back home, laughing, still calling each other names, my mom scolding us every time, but this time those names were spoken in the spirit of friendship. When we got home, she and I went straight to my room to play Dungeons & Dragons.
That’s how we became the best friends; over a game of D&D and drinking hot cocoa, which my mom brought up for us.

I was brought back to reality by Gina shaking me. In the time I was reliving the memory, I had already reached school.
“Earth to Frankie? Come back to the living!” she shook me.
“Yeah, hey, I’m here, I’m here” I said, quickly shaking my head.
“Okay, then lest go to History, or Mr. Jensen will be pissed!” she said, wrapping our arms together, so they were hooked together by our elbows, and we walked to class, talking along the way.
“Look” Gina nodded towards dark blue posters that were hung over all of the walls and lockers, with silver glitter on them and big yellow letters spelling out WINTER DANCE.
“Oh, God, not this again” I sighed, rolling my eyes.
“Yeah, it sucks... So do you wanna go?” Gina asked.
“What? Like you and me, like a date?” I questioned.
“Yeah, ‘cause I can’t bring Mikey, and you can’t technically go with Gee” she shrugged.
“Yeah, okay” I agreed to her invitation.
“Oh, and by the way, I heard that Natalie Brown is gonna ask you out at the dance” said Gina, with a wicked smile on her face.
“Oh, God... Doesn’t she know I’m gay?” I sighed, pushing open the door to our History classroom.
“Apparently not” laughed Gina, as we sat down in our usual seats.
“Can somebody please tell her that I don’t like girls” I pleaded.
“Yeah, no... ‘Cause it’s gonna be so fucking funny!” she giggled.
“GG” I frowned at her.
“What?”
I just stared at her, with an annoyed expression.
“Fine, I’ll try telling her during English, okay?” she finally gave in.
“Yes” I smirked.
“But you in return you’re going to go to the mall with me today, so I can get a dress” Gina said as Mr. Jensen walked in to the classroom.
“Fine, I need to go buy Gerard a Christmas gift anyways” I shrugged, turning to face the board on to which Mr. Jensen was already writing our assignment for this hour.

Right before lunch, before I headed to Gerard’s classroom, where we spent every lunch time, he texted me.
GEE <3 (12.01): Can’t make it for lunch. In a very very VERY boring meeting.
Sorry sweetheart, I love you <3 xo

ME (12.02): I love you too <3 and you don’t have to wait for me after class.
Going to the mall with GG

GEE <3 (12.04): Okay, see ya later at home :*

And just like that, after two month, I headed to the men’s bathroom, where I ate lunch before Gerard came in to my life. Nothing really changed in there, maybe there were a few more things written on the walls of the bathroom stalls, few more curse words written by the mirrors and the smell was a lot worse.

Like planed, Gina and I made our way to the mall after class had ended.
“So, did you tell Natalie?” I immediately asked, when we were a block away from school.
“Yeah, I did” Gina giggled.
“And?”
“And she looked at me like a said that you were crazy” she laughed, throwing her arm around my shoulders.
“I mean, I’m not arguing with her. You are crazy, but that’s not the point here. But I don’t think she really liked it when it told her”
“Well like it or not, it’s just the way things are and that’s that” I said, firmly, like I was speaking to Natalie herself. Thankfully, I wasn’t.
Soon enough we reached the mall. The whole building was already covered in Christmas decorations, Christmas lights, and the ever annoying Christmas songs sounding through the speakers.
“And thus begins the season of brain melting songs” I sighed.
“Oh, Franklin, get in to the spirit of Christmas” laughed Gina, her arm still on my shoulders.
“Hmm... Let me think about it- No!” I say, ripping her arm away from me, and she just laughed. She always loved to annoy me with the whole Christmas spirit and the joy of Christmas that everyone seemed to get at this time. I only hope Gerard wasn’t one of those people. Thankfully, Gerard and I already decided not to have any special Christmas plans, even though he wanted to take me to his and Mikey’s childhood home, but I thought it was a little too soon to meet my boyfriends parents, because we’ve only been together for less than two months.
Our first stop at the mall, was a really girly dress shop, with the most popular pop songs playing instead of the Christmas songs. As Gina walked through the store, trying to find dresses to try on, I sat on the very comfy chairs couple meters away from the changing rooms. My only job in this store was to say if I liked the dress or not.
I honestly wasn’t paying much attention, because I was too deep in thought trying to decided what to buy Gerard for Christmas. I thought about getting him a comic, but I didn’t know which ones he had, what he liked, if he had a favourite writer, I didn’t know anything. So I called Mikey for help.
He told me about a couple comics Gerard would freak out over. I thanked him, then turned my attention yet again to Gina, who had just walked out of the changing room, wearing a white dress, reaching down to just a little above her knees. It was sleeveless and simple, the rim of the skirt dyed black. It looked like it was spread with black ink and it was beautiful. She was beautiful.
“What do you think?” she asked, twirling around.
“You look gorgeous” I smiled.
“You really think so?” she looked down at the dress, then stepped in front of the full length mirror.
“To bad Mikey won’t see it” she sighed, sadness evident in her eyes.
“Hey, come on” I stood up and stepped next to her, coming in to view of myself in the mirror.
“He knows how beautiful you are” I assured her.
“Yeah...” she mumbled.
“I’m gonna buy it” Gina then said, marching back in to the changing room, to well, change.
After Gina purchased her new dress, we headed to the art supply shop, because I wanted to get Gee some paints to go with the comic.
So our next stop was the comic books store.
Bob greeted us with a big smile, as he was unloading a new shipment of comic books.
“Hey guys” he said, leaning down on the counter.
“Hey Bob” Gina and I said at the same time.
“Anything I can do for ya?” Bob offered.
“Yeah” I said, stepping to the counter: “Do you have Kill Your Boyfriend?”
“Grant Morrison and Philip Bond, right?” Bob asked to confirm.
“Yeah, I think it was published by Vertigo” I said, trying to remember everything Mikey had told me.
“I might have it in the back” Bob said with a serious face, headed to the back of the store. I followed him through the many shelves of comic books and graphic novels.
“Yeah, I have the first edition, realised in ‘95” said Bob, taking the comic from it stand in the back, and showing it to me.
“Oh my God, that’s awesome! He’s gonna freak out when he’ll see this” I smiled, taking the comic and quickly flipping through it.
“Oh, so it’s for a special someone, I’m guessing” smiled Bob, as we headed back to the counter.
“Yeah. It’s a Christmas present for my boyfriend” I smiled, blushing.
“Well, I hope he likes it”

Gina and I said our goodbyes and she again promised that she really did tell Natalie about me not being interested in girls. We hugged and went our separate ways.
Just as I reached Gerard’s, well also my house, but anyways... Just as I reached it, a snowball hit the left side of my face, causing me to almost fall to the frozen ground.
“Fuck!” I hissed, as I felt the cold sting spread through my cheek. I wiped away the snow off of me, and looked in the way the snowball came from.
Nothing. No one.
I frowned, but continued my way to the front door. Right before I reached for the doorknob, when yet another snowball hit me, this time in my lower torso.
This time when I looked to see who threw it, I saw him, ducking behind the neighbours bushes. I smirked to myself, placing the bought items by the door.
“Fucker” I whispered, quickly and quietly running Gerard’s way, picking up some snow along the way, shaping it in to a ball. As soon as I saw his head reappear from the bushes I threw the snowball. The last thing I saw where his wide eyes, before the cold ball hit him directly in the face. He fell back on the ground, with a loud ‘fuck’ emerging from his mouth. I laughed, as I looked behind the bush and he was removing the snow from his face, his nose and cheeks completely red.
“Come on” I said in giggles, and helped him back on his feet, dusting the snow off his coat.
Gerard made a pouty face, trying to look offended because of the snowball, but all his that achieved was making me laughed even more.
He pulled me in to a hug, colliding our lips.
When we pulled away, I noticed it. There were no red strands of hair sticking from under his woollen hat. I almost didn’t dare to look, but I knew I had to. As I reached up, to take off his hat, Gerard grinned so widely, excitement sparkling in his eyes.
I pulled the hat off his head, clutching in my hand like it was for dear life.
This morning, Gerard’s hair was a fiery mess, reaching to his shoulders, the sides cut short. Now everything was short, all dyed white.
“What do you think?” he asked, and I sensed in his voice that he was nervous. I took a step back, still holding on to Gerard’s right hand, taking a full, good look at him. It was so different...
“I... I like it” I breathed out, still realising that his bright red hair was actually gone.
“Really?” he asked, scratching the back of his neck.
“You’re always beautiful to me baby. Red hair, white hair, short, long, I don’t care. Because it’s still you” I told him, kissing the top of his forehead.
“Are you going to take me up on my offer this morning?” Gerard then asked.
“What offer?” I frowned.
“Do you wanna build a snowman?” he sang, twirling me around. When we were face to face again, I wrapped my arm around his neck, missing the lack of hair that my hands would usually tangle in, but I knew I’d get used to it, and pressed my lips to his, tilting my head slightly, our lips fitting perfectly. I slit my tongue across Gerard’s lower lip, and without hesitation, he granted me access.
It was like the perfect winter kiss, and to top it all off, it started snowing again. We started smiling midway through the kiss, breaking apart in laughter.
“Did you and Gina have fun?” asked Gerard, our arms still around each other.
“Mhm, she bought a really pretty dress”
“I can’t wait to see you, all sexy at that dance on Saturday, in a tux” Gerard hummed: “And then I can’t wait to tare that tux off you and just throw you on our bed”
“Yeah, I’d love it if you’d do that now, but we kind of have a snowman to build” I shrugged, then started laughing again.
“The snowman can wait!” Gerda said, then picked me up bridal style, giggles escaping my lips.
“But Gee” I whined: “I really wanna build that snowman, now!”
“Fine, but later...” he didn’t finished, he just wiggled his eyebrows.
And we really did build a snowman, throwing occasional snowballs at each other, laughing our asses off the entire time.
We named the snowman Smoky, placing a cigarette where his mouth was.
And as promised we ended up having mind blowing sex before going to bed. And we had to listen to Mikey giving us a lecture that we can’t be so loud after he had gone to sleep. And after he left, we just laughed and fell asleep in each other’s arms. Like every night.
