Hello Angel
Chapter Three
"So you're going to go to that show tomorrow, right?"
Alex took the pan off the stove and flipped pancakes onto Madeleine's plate. She pulled it apart with her hands, ignoring the utensils lying to her left. She was so deep in thought that Alex had to wave his hand in front of her face to catch her attention again. "Mad. I made you breakfast for dinner now talk to me."
"Sorry Alex. Yes, I'm going to the show. As weird as all of this is, I don't think I can pass up a VIP experience with My Chemical Romance, you know?" Madeleine put a piece of the pancake in her mouth and sighed, leaning on her free hand. "I just can't believe my parents almost didn't want to tell me this. As if they didn't know they were my favorite band." She slammed her fist down on the table, making Alex jump. "I could have grown up with some of the best brothers in the fucking world."
"And instead you ended up with me," Alex laughed, handing her a mug so he could pour her some tea.
Madeleine looked down into her mug. Were they supposed to immediately be best friends tomorrow when she met them? Doubtful. Was it going to be painfully awkward? Probably. How was she supposed to react in this kind of a situation? Knowing her luck she’d probably do something embarrassing like vomit in front of them.
She was so lost in her own head that she didn't realize Alex had been talking to her.
"Madeleine Way, huh."
She shook her head. "Legally, Madeleine Paulsen. I don't have any legal ties to them because it was an adoption process. Surrogacy. I don't know."
"But, theoretically," Alex started and Madeleine covered her face with her hands. "Theoretically, you could change your last name if you really wanted to. You're an adult. And you're going to tell me you don't want to be Madeleine Way? Or do I have to pull out your old notebooks?"
"You wouldn'tdare!" she said, laughing. True, she did have a fangirl crush on Gerard for a while, but now thinking about it, she stuck her tongue out and gagged at Alex.
"'Miss Maddie Way' all over the notebook covers!" Madeleine threw the remainder of the pancake at him, missing Alex entirely and leaving a nice treat for Dinah who had just woken up from a nap.
They spent the night laughing and coming up with various scenarios for her impending meeting with the Way brothers, and by extension, My Chemical Romance. She hardly realized how late it got until she finally looked at her phone and saw 3:21AM glaring at her. Madeleine picked Dinah up off of her stomach and set her on the ground before retiring to her bedroom.
Donna said she would come pick her up early so they could get breakfast and hang out before the show. Right on time, Mrs. Way was at her door, car keys in hand. Alex was still fast asleep – Madeleine was an early riser and Alex liked to sleep in – so she quietly locked the door behind her and stepped out onto the stoop.
“So…” Madeleine started. “Do you want me to call you mom? Or what?” Great, off to a fantastic start, she thought. Donna smiled at her.
“Whatever you’re comfortable with, hun. I’m not going to expect you to just accept all of this immediately.”
Oh. Okay.
They went to one of Madeleine’s favorite restaurants and Donna offered to pay for whatever she wanted. They talked over waffles and orange juice and Madeleine was a little startled by how easy it was to talk to Donna. Donna was so interested in everything she said, and asked so many questions about her life. Maybe it’s just because she’s been absent for so long, Madeleine thought as Donna went on about her sons. I just can’t believe this is actually happening to me right now.
“Gerard is so excited to finally meet you. Mikey too. They framed a picture of you on our wall between them because they always knew you were a part of the family.”
“That’s really sweet and all, but… what if they never met me?”
“Maddie – is that okay? Can I call you Maddie? – I told them that as soon as you were old enough to make your own choices, we’d tell you everything. They knew they’d meet you someday.” Madeleine poked at her waffle. Maybe breakfast food wasn’t the best idea after last night’s pancakes… But she scarfed it down anyway.
They were set to go to Randall’s Island by mid-afternoon. My Chemical Romance wasn’t set to play for another hour so they still had some time to get there. “Have you ever seen them live?” Maddie shook her head. “Do you wanna stay in the crowd for the show, and then we’ll pull you in back stage?” Maddie nodded furiously. “We can get you right up front so after the show, the security guy can just slip you through the barricade – I’ll talk to him.”
The awkward security escort to the front of the audience made Maddie uncomfortable, because all the girls were staring at her, wondering who the hell she thought she was. Donna had already disappeared backstage and Madeleine was left alone, front and center.
“How’d you get to cut the entire line?” someone next to her asked.
Madeleine looked at the girl beside her, skeptically looking Maddie up and down. “Uh, I know some people? It was arranged, I don’t really have any say in this.”
“So you used daddy’s money to get your way to the front of a show?”
“No, you’re misunderstanding me!” Madeleine desperately tried to reword herself without spilling the real reason, but a loud twanging guitar stopped her short. Her heart started drumming as the band poured out onto the stage. The new drummer had taken his place at the back of the stage at the drumset, and then she saw Ray setting up to her right. Frank was tuning his guitar while Mikey put his bass on over his shoulder.
And then she saw him.
Gerard, in all his dramatic glory, clad in a bulletproof vest and screaming at the crowd into the microphone.
“ARE YOU FUCKIN’ READY, NEW YORK?”
