Hello Angel
Chapter Two
She kept her distance, even when Donna stood up and tried to come closer to her. Madeleine’s eyes kept darting from her parents to Donna and she felt cornered in the living room.
“Honey, it’s - ”
“Don’t you dare tell me that it’s ‘okay’ right now,” she snapped. “You just… you just told me my whole life was a lie!?” Madeleine was stewing with rage she didn’t even know she had inside of her. It had to be some kind of a sick joke. This was not something that you told somebody after twenty three years. If you’re going to tell me something like this, you tell me when I’m younger or not at all. She pushed past her parents, running upstairs to her old room and climbing out onto the fire escape.
She heard the door close downstairs and her parents and Donna walked out onto the stoop. Madeleine kept herself pressed against the building but trained her ears down on their conversation.
“Maybe it would have been best to never tell her.”
“Nonsense. We talked about this and you agreed you’d tell her when she turned eighteen. Or do you not remember that part of the agreement?” That was Donna’s voice. I still would have flipped out,Madeleine thought, smirking as she eavesdropped.
“We just never got around to it. She was off to college and ready to live on her own – there were other things we were worried about!” her father said.
“And then your sons just got so famous, I didn’t want her to think badly of the situation.”
Madeleine stiffened. Sons. Of course, she completely forgot that Donna had two boys, her brothers. She pulled her phone out to look at her background. Two of the five guys on her wallpaper stuck out. One with glasses and a beanie, and the other with the same messy black hair she had. She peeked down over the fire escape. “Donna?”
“Yes dear?”
“Gerard and Mikey are my brothers?”
“Technically, yes.”
“Oh.” She didn’t know how to react to this news. She kept avoiding Donna’s gaze and sighed.
“Hun, are you ready to come down so we can straighten this out?” Donna asked kindly. Madeleine exhaled and climbed back into her room, stomping down the staircase and flopping down in an armchair.
“So, why’d you give me away?” Madeleine couldn’t help the first question that came out of her mouth. She flushed beet red and tried to hide her face.
“Well, your parents here are good friends of mine. They were looking for a surrogate because – as your mom probably never told you – she was having fertility problems.” Madeleine looked questioningly at her mom, who nodded but would not meet her eye. “I already had two boys so I figured, hell, I’ll help them out since I could carry kids.”
Madeleine frowned. Donna was smiling awkwardly at her, trying to lighten the mood, but Madeleine couldn’t help but be upset about the situation. “So I’m not genetically yours?”
“You are. It was my egg and my husband’s -”
“Okay, okay, that’s all I need to hear.” Madeleine cut her off before Donna could finish the sentence.
Donna got up and sat down closer to Madeleine. “Sweetheart, please believe that I have wanted to meet you for so long. Your parents sent me pictures as you were growing up and turning into this beautiful woman and it hurt me so much that I had to love you from afar.”
“Why couldn’t you just tell me this sooner?”
“We didn’t want you to be overwhelmed growing up. We all just wanted you to grow up normally and not confused.”
Donna cut in again, grabbing Madeleine by the hand. “When I first held you in the hospital, I wanted to keep you. I had two boys, but no girls. But I couldn’t just decide last minute to keep you and try again for your parents – the papers were all signed and I don’t think I’d like to go through pregnancy again so soon.”
Touching. Madeleine turned to her parents. “Were you aware of how obsessed she was with me, and didn’t want to let her ever meet me?” She tried to smile to give off the impression of a light hearted joke, but she was still uneasy about all of this that it just came off as a grimace.
“We knew, we just wanted the timing to be right… but I guess maybe we should have told you earlier.” Her mom shrugged. Just as Madeleine was about to ask another question, Donna interjected.
“The boys have been going crazy. They fell in love with you in the hospital too and they always asked if there were new pictures. Even since they’ve been on the road with their band they’ve called to see about you.” Madeleine’s heart almost stopped. “I told them I was coming to meet you today, because they’re playing a show on Riker’s Island? Randall’s Island? Something along those lines. The show is tomorrow and obviously I get VIP treatment – so do you. I’d like to take you, if you want. They’re dying to meet you.”
