Burn Bright

The Beginning

There is a story among the Susquehanna tribe of a group of people who can access their spirt animals.

It is said that the ancestors favored this tribe, the chief of this tribe was a strong man who ruled his people with honor and pride. He was always fair and kind, he spoke softly but his justice was fierce. When his tribe was attacked he sacrificed himself for his people, the ancestors took pity on the man and brought him back as a wolf, so that he could continue to watch over his tribe in secret. The chief had two sons, one a lot like himself; soft spoken, kind, and honored his tribe in any way possible. The other son, the younger of the two, was a free spirt. He roamed the mountains everyday. The two brothers fought day and night after they thought their father had perished. The older wanted the younger to stay at the village to help him run the tribe but the younger just wanted to explore the world, to be free from the hardships of the tribe.

The chief hated seeing his sons fight so he begged the ancestors to help his so
ns, so that his tribe would not be an innocent victim in the sons quarrels. The ancestors agreed to help the brothers because they liked the tribe so much. They brought the brothers into the woods and suggested a compromise for the brothers.

For the older brother they said that he could willingly change himself into a wolf, like his father, so that he could rule and protect his tribe to the best of his abilities. He would be allowed to pick three men or women to be granted with this gift as well; however they could turn only into their individual spirt an
imals. So that they too could help protect and hunt for the tribe. They told the older brother that only the first born of a chief would be able to turn into a wolf, so only a chief could have the power of the wolf.

For the younger brother they said that he could change himself into a beautiful falcon, so that he could spread his wings and fly. He would be able to roam and explore the mountains whenever he wanted,
on one condition. He needed to help his brother run the tribe and keep everything in balance. The younger brother agreed to the terms and the ancestors granted him the flight of a falcon.

From that day on the brothers ran the tribe, and the tribe only grew in success.

“Is that why you can turn into a wolf daddy? And uncle Mikey into a falcon?” A little girl smiled as her father concluded his tale. The father smiled and kissed the top of his daughters head.

“Yes Miss B, and you will too. You will be the most beautiful wolf this tribe has ever seen.” Gerard stated, “Now off to bed pumpkin, before your mother finds out you stayed up past your bedtime again.” The little girl giggled, got up off the floor and ran to her room. Gerard got to his feet and stretched his spine.

Winter was approaching and he needed to get his tribe prepared. They needed to stock up on food, and repair any of the houses so that they could withstand the cruel weather. He ran his hand through his dark hair and let out a loud sigh. So much to do in so little time. He heard the fluttering of wings and smiled, “And where exactly have you been?” He turned around and saw a falcon perched on top of his chair. It's yellow beak glowed in the light of the fire. The bird cocked its head and let out a small coo. “Get off the furniture you know Lindsay doesn't like it.”

The falcon morphed into the familiar face of his younger brother Mikey. His hair was soaked from the rain and he had to push it out of his face to see. “I was scouting the area Gerard, making sure the warlocks stay away from our boundaries.” Mikey shook his head smiling, small beads of water fell from his hair, “And I poke a hole once in her furniture and I never hear the end of it.”

Gerard embraced his brother, “I don't like you gone for so long, I was beginning to get worried. Five days is too long.”

Mikey pulled away, “I know, but I want to make sure our boundaries are safe. Even though we have a treaty, I just don't trust them.”

“Any sight of them?” Gerard asked.

“No, they've hidden in their holes. They can stay there for all I care.” Mikey reported. Gerard nodded in agreement, “Any sign of Bandit’s transformation yet?” Mikey asked.

Gerard groaned, “No, Lindsey and I are getting worried. Both you and I had our first transformation by her age. She's almost eight.”

Mikey shrugged, “Well this is new territory for us, no chief has ever had a daughter before. Maybe girls are late bloomers.”

“I hope so, I don't know what will happen if she doesn't. What will the tribe think of me…of her? They won't accept her Mikey.” Gerard ran his hand through his hair.

“Don't worry Gee, it'll happen.”

They didn't know that around the corner a little girl was ease dropping on the conversation, tears ran down her cheeks as she heard her father talk about her. She didn't want to disappoint her tribe, but most of all she didn't want to disappoint her father.
