The Bridge To Our Life

20 Dollar Nose Bleed (Fall Out Boy)

"It feels like fourteen carats but no clarity
When I look at the man who would be king
The man who would be king
Goes to the desert the same war his dad rehearsed
Came back with flags on coffins and said
'We won, oh we won' "
~"20 Dollar Nose Bleed" by Fall Out Boy

*Frank's Point of View*
The world of Baden...
That was what came to mind as I sat in the car, with my headphones on. My grandpa would tell me stories about the forest bound, crystalline kingdom of wonder and magic. I would listen to every story so intently, get so lost in the words, that I could see the kingdom, and the people inside.
That was when I was little though. Last time I had been to the estate was five years ago. I was twelve. Haven't seen my grandparents since.
I sent one last text to Jamia before I lost cell service.
To: Jammy<3
From: Frank
Message: I'll call you as soon as I can, Jam. I love you, goodbye
.
I never did get the chance to call her again...
I turned my cellphone off and pulled my headphones off as the large mansion loomed into view. The car neared the front gates. Large wrought iron gates that swung open with the push of a button.
A large lower case 'i' was engraved on the metal plate in the middle of the gates. It stood for "Iero".
My Grandma Milly was waiting in the court yard for my arrival. When the car pulled up the drive way and through the gates she ran towards it. The driver came to a stop just inside the gates. I crawled out of the back seat and grabbed my bags. I looked around the beautiful court yard, and out into the gardens beyond the main gates. I forgot how much I loved it here.
The best thing about my Grandparents estate is that my room had a turn table and a really nice pair of headphones so I could play my records.
I was pulled out of my thoughts when the elderly woman, I knew as Milly, threw her arms around my neck and hugged me. I hugged back and blushed as my stomach rumbled. I hadn't had time for breakfast.
"Hey Grandma!" I greeted.
She was already dragging me towards the mansion, and under the over hang on the porch held up by marble columns.
My Grandpa Isaac was waiting at the nice French doors for me. We hugged and said our hello's before my Grandma hurried me through the marble hallway to their kitchen.
I was greeted by the smiling faces of the kitchen staff. A woman I knew as Esmeralda approached me and took my bags. "These will be up in your room." The blonde woman informed me. I nodded as she walked away.
My cousin, Ralph joined me at the table, a sour expression on his face. "Hello Franklin." He hissed. I felt rage boil in my stomach, "That isn't my name." I said in a calm tone. He simply laughed, and I wanted to hit him. He noticed. "You wouldn't be able to hit me. I'm too quick." I scowled.
"Wanna bet?" I smirked.

He held up a crisp 20 dollar bill. "I'll give you $20 if you can hit me." He challenged. Seemed fair, so I nodded in agreement. A moment later he was on the ground, holding his nose. I took the bill off the table, shoving it in my pocket. His nose was bleeding, so I was satisfied.

Dinner was tense. I stared at Ralph, he stared at me, and we wouldn't look away.
"I hate to interrupt your game of "lets-burn-holes-in-each-others-skulls-with-angry-glares" but your Grandfather and I need to set three ground rules." She said.
Ralph groaned, but I perked up. Only three rules? Wow.
"Rule one, no going into the forest at night." Grandpa Isaac stated.
"Rule two, no straying from the forest path." Grandma Milly added.
Then they both grew solemn, "Rule three..." the began in unison, "NEVER swim in the river." They finished.
"Understood?" Grandma Milly asked.
Ralph and I both nodded.
Ralph screamed as a raccoon tapped on the window, and we all laughed.

Esmeralda insisted on taking me to my room after dinner, even though I already knew where it was. As I followed her up the stairs she babbled on about something, but I wasn't really listening.
As we reached the room, I began to take off my shirt, but paused. She blushed and walked away, closing the door. I threw my shirt to the ground, and walked over to my record bag. I grabbed my misfits record and put it on the table before dropping the needle and putting the head phones on.
I was going to like it here.
