A Flame From The Future.
Third
Frank stared blankly out the window of the class room that was on the first floor of the school. It was a pretty large room with students that filled every chair in it. Where Frank sat in the back of the room he could hear the whispers of people who stopped paying attention to their teacher, Ms. Jones. Most of the conversations were typical ones, the girls talked about dresses and the boys talking about impressing some girl with their nonexistent working man skills. Nothing Frank cared about, so he tuned out the voices, focusing on the forest outside the windows. It had been maybe 4 days since that night Frank followed the redhead into the woods and found out way more information than his brain could process. It was almost like a fog hazed over his mind constantly now, as if his mind was trying to keep him from thinking about Gerard. But no amount of haze actually stopped him from doing so. He thought about Gerard constantly, always wondering if he was still in the woods or if he moved on. Maybe he found what he needed for the bracelet? Who knows. All Frank knew was that when he went back into the woods the night after, Gerard was gone.
Maria was furious with Frank after she found him in the woods. For his punishment shes making him stay after class for a whole month to clean up. It took him maybe an hour to finish and he hated it. He had way better things to do like play the guitar or come up with new stories. But no, Maria had to take an hour of his day away. Evil Witch.
After the class was done and Frank spent an hour of cleaning, he was finally free. The first thing he did was run up to the bedroom and grab his guitar. He ignored the other boys asking him to play soccer with them and ignored the girls who tried to talk to him. He made a beeline out of the school, going right to the pond on the other side of the forest.
Today, just like almost all the other days, it was foggy and wet outside. The trees dripped with moisture and the ground was soggy. Truly this was a depressing place, but Frank was used of it by now. He found the log he usually sits on and made himself comfortable on it. Thankfully it wasn't raining, but the sky seemed to be threatening to leak tears at any moment, so Frank didn't count on staying out there for very long.
He strummed the guitar thoughtfully, trying out different tunes that he had learned over the years, but the same old songs get boring. So he continued on a song he never finished making. It wasn't anything amazing, but it was fun to play. Fast paced, much like the songs a few Irish kids in the school play. He had gotten really good advice from them.
It wasn't long until Frank heard slow footsteps sound from behind him. He wasn't alarmed nor frightened though. He knew who the footsteps belonged to even if he only met that person twice before. But Frank's been having dreams, vivid dreams. Ones of Gerard that made him wake up in a sweat. So he knew who those sounds belonged to.
The redhead stopped, not coming into view of Franks eyesight. He listened to the guitar quietly and he listened to Franks random curse words that would spill from his innocent lips when he plucked the wrong string, or something just didn't sound right to him. A ghost of a smile spread across Gerard's thin lips just from listening and watching the other boy. It wasn't weird, it wasn't awkward. It was just as it was. It felt like the most natural thing ever to happen, even though it was possibly the most uncommon of situations.
Frank eventually set the guitar down. leaning it against the log he sat on. He turned, facing the redhead then smiling. "I haven't seen you in days" Frank stated solemnly. The other boy simply nodded, not making eye contact and then moving to go sit next to Frank. "I went to Boston" He finally said after moments of considering his words. "Boston? Why Boston?" Frank asked, his eyebrows forwarded. Boston was an hour away, and that's with a vehicle. What business did Gerard even have in Boston? "I thought maybe going to a city would solve my problem, turns out I was wrong" He said in disappointment and shrugged. "I don't know, it was a stupid idea anyways" He continued. Gerard seemed different today. He was annoyed, that was obvious. But his strange yet careless demeanor was gone. He seemed weighted down with something on his mind, any happiness that was there just days ago had vanished. His eyes were tired, he looked defeated.
"Whats wrong?" Frank asked after observing Gerard long enough to feel like he was being creepy. The redhead looked at him confused, like it was the most obvious reason what was wrong. "I can't leave this time period" He responded, his voice rising a bit. Gerard rose from the log and began pacing back and forth in anger. "If only I didn't forget the time period I was supposed to go to then I wouldn't have thought of the wrong one and I wouldn't have fallen down some stupid hill and broken this worthless bracelet!" He ranted on about all the things he did wrong to lead up to this point. He seemed furious and hell, he had a reason to be mad. This was his own stupid fault for getting stuck in nowhere land. He wondered if his father would try looking for him.. What if the police began looking for him? He would be shit out of luck if the police found him. But there was no way that would happen, right? It would be impossible for them to guess what time period he was in, what day it was, and where in the world he ended up at. He would be in Italy for all those pigs know. Bit his father would know better.. The guy was smart. Genius even. Gerard got his smarts from the man after all.
Frank was silent, listening to the rambles and ranting of the redheaded fool. He didn't know what was happened, but he guessed he would be freaking out too, or far more, if he was lost in this sort of way. Then it occurred to him, Maria always has an answer for everything. No matter how much she gets on his nerves, he has to admit that she knows everything and has an answer for any question. "I know someone who can help" Frank blurted out, cutting the redhead off from any further ramblings. Gerard stopped and turned to face him. "The headmistress of the school" Frank said, pointing his finger towards where the building was. "There's nothing Maria can't solve" He stated and stood up. He grabbed Gerard by the hand then began tugging him towards the forest, well tried to. Gerard didn't move from his spot. "And what do you plan on telling her? She wont believe a thing you say" The redhead said, sounding defeated again. Frank on the other hand had hope filled eyes. "Well just show her that teleporting thing you can do. She'll have no choice but to believe you" He said, like it was obvious. Frank went to tug the other boy again but Gerard shook his head and pulled Frank back, making him fall into his chest at the abrupt motion. Frank Quickly recovered though before the other started talking. "I can't. Every time I use teleporting it disturbs the air and that can alert the police to where I am" He explained simply.
"You're hiding from the police?" Frank asked, not sure what to think of this. Gerard nodded his head and refused to say anything else on it. "Okay. Have any better idea?" Gerard shook his head at the question. "The suns setting" Frank said while looking at the sky. "If was run we can catch her before dinner starts" He said. Reluctantly Gerard let Frank lead him through the forest, hand in hand. "I never got your name" Gerard stated loud enough for Frank to hear him over their rushed footsteps that caused leafs to break under their boots. Frank turned his head to the side then spoke "Its Frank" Was all that needed to be said. Gerard imprinted the name into his memory. Such a pretty face should never be forgotten anyways.
The great big stone building soon came into view. Gerard had wondered why it was so massive but now that he knows its a school, it made sense. The closer they got to it, the more nervous Gerard got. Frank was the only one who knew what powers the bracelet could do and he had no idea what adults in this era were capable of. What if they knew more than they led on and they alerted the police? Gerard shook his in an attempt to shake the thoughts out. He honestly had no other option at this point. He didn't want to grow old and die here. Though he didn't mind the thought of spending more time with Frank, he was on a mission though. He didn't just wake up one day and decide he was going to travel back in time and break the law for the fun of it. He had a job. He now wished he paid more attention in American history class.
They neared the building, entering in through large wooden double doors that he iron metal doorknobs. The inside was pretty much like the outside. Old looking cement walls that someone at one point tried to paint but now the paint was chipping of. There was no electric wiring in the walls so the lamps that lined the hallways had wires attached from the outside. The floors were made up of beat up wood that looked like it needed to be replaced badly, Gerard wondered if they were even safe anymore.
The boys jogged down a handful of hallways, ignoring the older women that would tell them 'no running in the halls'. It seemed Frank really didn't care what any of them had to say, and Gerard was surprised they didn't try to stop him running with something other than words that clearly he would ignore. Sooner or later they rounded a large door frame leading into an older styled kitchen, which was no surprise. Gerard was quickly figuring out that the decade he got dropped into only just figured out electricity. So it was no shock when he saw a large fire place almost taking up the whole wall was used as an oven. There was a simple chop block in the middle of the room and no counters or cabinets to speak of. A woman who looked no older than 25 years old stood there behind the chop block, her hands covered in flour and working their way through thick bread dough. Her face was the shape of a heart and her skin was pale as snow which only complimented her naturally light blonde hair that was pulled into a messy bun.
"Maria" Frank said. She didn't lift her eyes from what she was doing but she hummed in response, showing she heard him. "This is Gerard" He stated. Gerard felt something stir in his chest at the words being uttered from that voice. He didn't think too much of it though. He has a boyfriend back home after all.
The woman rose her head. A brief look of bewilderment crossed her face but was soon replaced by pure confusion once she took in Gerard's hair and outfit. He fidget under her strong stare. "If this is some kind of joke it isn't funny" She seethed then moved between Frank and Gerard. She put her arm out in a shielding manner like a protective mother, and if it wasn't for the fact they look nothing alike, Gerard would have thought she actually was his mother. "What are you?" She asked and silenced Frank when he tried to talk. "Um- I uh..." Gerard had no idea what to say to make it sound believable that he was from the future. He knew she wouldn't believe him. "He's from the Future" Frank blurted. "They can time travel in the future and now he's stuck and needs help" He continued when the woman looked at him like he was crazy. "If time travel was ever going to be possible we'd have a whole bunch of people from the future walking around, now just one person." She stated then stared Gerard down. "Okay how else would you explain how he dresses?" Frank asked. The woman seemed to take a moment to consider it then looked Gerard up and down. "If it helps any, the reason why no one from the future is just walking around is because its illegal to go back in time" Gerard piped in. "I'm the third person to ever do it" He added in for good measure. Maria didn't look convinced. Her eyebrows were knitted together and she kept that protective hand out. "He's not dangerous" Frank said in a sigh, a little over dramatically. "You always overreact about everything!" He added, still sounding dramatic. Maria rolled her eyes then looked back at the redhead. "Do you have any weapons?" She asked. That was something Frank never even though of asking. Gerard shook his head then took his jacket off to further prove had nothing dangerous on him. Maria nodded in approval and stepped forward to get a better look at him. She circled around him, looking very closely then stopped when she was between the boys again. "And how exactly do you 'time travel'" She asked then folded her hands together in a formal manner. Gerard could already tell she was a very smart and proper women, someone he easily feared already. She was simply intimidating. A woman no one should mess with, she'd out smart them in no time.
Gerard explained to her everything that happened. When he would begin to ramble or talk too fast she'd slow him down, like she had dealt with this a million times before. When he was finished she gave a thoughtful look that replaced the hostile she wore moments before. "I'm still not sure I believe all of this. And there's not much I can do to help you find what you need to fix it. But I can let you stay here if you have no else to stay" She informed him. From behind her a wide smile grew on Franks face at the mention of Gerard staying, but the redhead himself was unsure of the idea. Regardless of the nagging feeling that this was a bad idea, Gerard nodded in agreement and in no time he was being pulled away from the kitchen by Frank who was ecstatic.
