Fiery Hearts

Chapter 1

“Lizzie are you almost ready? We were supposed to leave 30 minutes ago. Matt’s gonna be pissed.” I called from Lizzie’s living room.
She was infamous for running late. If she had to be somewhere by 8, it was safe to assume she would be there by 9. If I needed her somewhere by 5, I learned to tell her I needed her by 4, that was she’ll actually be on time. Just because I learned and adapted to this strategy doesn’t mean the rest of our friends did. Like our friend Matthew Goldstein for example. He knew Lizzie always ran late but never adjusted the times, so she was always late to events and outings he planned.
“God calm down. You’re always rushing me.” Lizzie complained as she walked into the living room.
“I’m always rushing you because you’re always late.” I mocked. “Maybe if you were on time I wouldn’t have to yell at you.”
“Well you have a point there. It’s not my fault it takes a while for me to reach perfection.” She smirked flipping her freshly curled blond hair. “Now let’s go. We both know Matt is gonna throw a fit about our being late.”
“It’ll be your fault…” I mumbled as we exited her apartment.
Lizzie and I had been friends for the past 15 years. We met when we were seniors at Chapman University. I had only met her because of her ex-boyfriend. His name was Anthony, at the time I thought he was absolutely amazing. When Anthony and I started seeing each other, Lizzie somehow managed to find out who I was and told me I should leave him because he was a total asshole. I just thought she was being a jealous ex and didn’t believe her. A few weeks after our encounter he started acting like a dipshit so I left him. When I ran into Lizzie after I left him we kind of got to talking about it and formed a friendship that has lasted quite a while.
“I thought I was driving.” Lizzie pouted when I unlocked my car and got into the driver’s seat.
“Hell no, your driving would cause me to make an unnecessary stop here on my way home. I live in the opposite direction, I’m only driving you there because odds are you’ll go home with Matt. Besides, I actually want to get there in one piece. After all the years I’ve know you, your driving still scares the shit outta me.”
“I’m an amazing driver.” She said looking offended as she got into the passengers seat.
“Tell that to the officer who gave you a ticket from speeding by a school last week.”
“It’s not my fault I like a little speed in my life…wait…not like drugs speed…but you know miles per hour speed.”

“So you haven’t met him yet?” Lizzie asked when I pulled into the parking lot.
“Nope, Matt said he’s really down to earth though. I would love an interview.”
“He looks super sexy. Oh the things I would do to hi-“
“Is that all you think about Liz” I said interrupting her. “Besides he’s married. So don’t get your hopes up.”
“A girl can still dream.” She commented.
“Mmhhmm…Oh damn look at that line of people.” I stated when I finally found parking.
From the parking lot the venue was visible and it was clearly ridiculously packed. Matt told me the venue would start letting people in at 8, it was now 8:47 and the line was still wrapped around the venue. Everywhere there were teens and adults, some wore merchandise, others help signs and then there were the few, like Lizzie and I who dressed in somewhat appropriate concert attire. In my case it was dark jeans, black chucks, black tank top and a charcoal cardigan with my face somewhat made up. In Lizzie’s case it meant white skinnys, light blue tank with a crap load of jewelry and pounds of make up on her face, plus heels and curled hair. She always liked to go all out.
“Matt just texted me,” Lizzie began as we walked across the street to the venue, ”He said to just got to the front of his line, say we’re his plus twos, show our ids as proof and someone will show us where to go.”
“Alright…We’re about to get a shit load of dirty looks right about know.”
“I get dirty looks everywhere I go hun.” Lizzie declared as she strutted past me to the man with a clipboard at the front of the line. “Hi, we’re Goldstein’s plus 2s.”
“Lizzie Montgomery and Scarlett Anderson, Can I see some ID?”
Lizzie and I both nodded and handed the man our IDs.
“Looks good to me, you were the last ones on the list so I can show you inside.”
Last ones? Damn Lizzie…
“Liz! Flame!” Matt when he saw us. “Finally, what took so long? Let me guess, Liz needed to add another 5 pounds of makeup on her face before you guys left.”
“You know it.” I winked as I took my seat next to him.
“Shut up both of you.” Lindsey spat.
I laughed as I glanced around the venue. I had been to almost ever venue in LA but this one particular one I hadn’t yet. It was called Electra, it had just opened a little over three months ago and from what I heard the business it got was good. It was smaller than I originally expected it to be. From the outside of the building it looked pretty decent sized, like the House of Blues but on the inside it was way more intimate. The VIP section was very similar to the Troubadour, it connected to the side of the stage and was above the main floor. I watched as fans filed into the venue. Quite a few looked around the VIP area hastily for any familiar faces. They were all sorely disappointed because no lights were beamed on us so our faces were unrecognizable from the floor.
“So why did he decide to have a random concert here? It’s not like he’s on tour or anything, this concert was kind of out of the blue.” Lizzie commented as she took a sip of the drink in her hand. I couldn’t even recall her getting a drink.
“He wants to help promote the venue.” Matt answered.
“It’s a great venue. Its intimate, I like it.” I responded.
Lizzie replied with something but I had already lost interest in the conversation. She resorted to just talking to Matt but I could tell she didn’t mind. She and Matt had a weird romance thing going on. It was what some people called “skinny love.” Everything about their relationship with each other, meaning the way they interacted with each other, had everyone believing they were in a relationship. Unfortunately they weren’t. Or at least not yet. All our friends know they’re in love with each other, even Lizzie and Matt are aware that they love each other, it’s just that Lizzie is scared of commitment and so there relationship is more of an unspoken agreement of sorts. It seems completely insane, especially at our age, but I just roll with it.
As I pondered over the confusion that was Lizzie and Matt, I was suddenly thrust back into reality by the screams that bellowed from below. As I scanned the crowd the band that was now on stage began playing a song. The songs intro was too familiar to me, and I had to admit, my heart raced a bit in anticipation. Within seconds of the bands playing Gerard ran onto the stage and the crowd when completely insane. I smiled at their enthusiasm. The crowd’s reaction was always my favorite part about going to concerts. For an hour or so, nothing but the music matters to them and witnessing their passion for the artist and the music was the greatest thing ever.
When The Bureau finished, Gerard did the usual introduction. He thanked everyone for coming, said it meant a lot to him and he even named a few people in the VIP section. No one that I personal knew though. The whole time I was mesmerized. Of everyone that had previously been in My Chemical Romance, Gerard was the only one who I had not met yet. It had been a secret dream of mine to one day, not only meet him but also get the chance to meet him. I was in a weird trance and once he continued preforming all I could focus on was him. I felt like a creeper, and I probably looked like one too but I was too into the music to care.

“You guys ready?” Matt asked when the concert was over and people began filing out of the venue.
I nodded rapidly as I stood up from my seat and looked back at the crowd. The concert was amazing, coming from Gerard I expected nothing less.
“I have a surprise for both of you, follow me.” Matt ordered as he led in a direction opposite to the exiting traffic.
Lizzie and I both looked at each other. I looked at her expectantly but she just shrugged and followed Matt so I cautiously followed close behind her. Matt led us down the stair to a door that was guarded to a burly looking man. I watched as Matt whispered something into the man’s ear. After Matt finished talking, the man mumbled something inaudible into his walkie talkie while looking between the three of us. A few moments had pasted before the man nodded, stood aside and opened the door for us.
“In you go, and sorry about the delay. Just had to double check, we get a bunch of stories here.” The man apologized.
“No worries, I understand.” Matt smiled as he motioned Lizzie and I into the room.
I warily walked into the room. The room was super bright so it took a while from my eyes to adjust from the darkness of the main room. Once my eyes had adjusted though I was greeted by a room with about 10 people in in. On almost all the tables there was food, sodas and a few papers here and there. There also two huge dark green sofas in the center of the rom that faced each other. I recognized a few of the people in the room but I couldn’t quite place their names. Matt greeted a few of the people as Lizzie and I clung to him like a kid with his mom meeting strangers for the first time.
“Hey there you are,” Matt began automatically catching my attention. “These are the friends I wanted to introduce you to.
I looked up to see who he was talking to. He was obviously refereeing to Lizzie and I, I was just unaware on who we were about to meet. Within second of my looking up, a familiar blond in a blue suit turned to face us. I stared dumbfounded unable to completely make sense of the situation.
“Matt! I was beginning to wonder if you’d actually come tonight.” Gerard smiled hugging Matt. “How’ve you been?”
“I’ve been great, and from what I’ve heard, so have you.” Matt responded.
“Yeah, I guess I’ve been doing pretty good.” He said still smiling before turning to Lizzie and I. “So these must be the two friends you’ve been raving about.”
“Yeah, this is Lizzie Montgomery and Scarlett Anderson.”
“I’m Lizzie, it’s nice to meet you.” Lizzie commented as she stuck her hand out. Gerard graciously took her hand in his and shook it.
“So you must be Scarlett.” Gerard said turning to me.
I nodded,” And you’re Gerard. It’s nice to meet you.”
My words sounded so cool coming out of my mouth despite my mental state. I was actually shitting myself. Usually when I meet celebrities I act cool and composed and I’m never really fazed. Meeting Gerard was something else entirely though. My mind was racing. I had thought about meeting him hundreds of times and now that it was actually happening, I was in awe.
“Flame here has been dying to interview you. Once I heard about this concert I saw it as the perfect opportunity for both of you to finally meet.” Matt explained.
“Flame?” Gerard asked confused.
“It’s my middle name.” I confessed. “All my friends call me by it.”
Apparently when I was ‘in the womb’ as my parents put it, my mom would have weird dreams about fire. She said it wasn’t like a raging fire that was frightening or like the dark depths of hell, but flames that were actually glorious. She told me that every time she talked about the dreams I would start kicking and as a result when I was born I was named Scarlett because those were the colors of the flames, and Flame because…well, she dreamt of flames. My parents also told me that they had a slight fear that I would grow up to be some kind of pyromaniac.
“Humph, never met anyone named after fire.” Gerard began. “I like it though, it means you’re fierce, brilliant and restless. Most of all though, it means all it takes is one spark to get you going.”
