(Time lapse- 3 weeks later)
"FRANKIE. GET YOUR ASS DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW. WE'RE GONNA BE LATE!" Linda yelled from the bottom of the stairs.
"COMING MA!" He hollered back, stuffing his feet into his best converse and trying to apply his eyeliner at the same time, without poking himself in the eye.
He'd been awake since 5am, too excited to sleep, but he was STILL somehow having to rush to get out the door on time.
Finally satisfied with the black lines, he dashed from his room and rocketed down the stairs "Ready?.." Linda smiled down at the lightly panting boy. Frankie nodded, big grin on his face ".. Ok!.. Let's go!"
Leaving the house, Frankie ran to the passenger side of the car and bounced impatiently as he waited for his mother to lock the front door, and unlock the car. As soon as he heard the click, he flung the door open and jumped inside, slamming the door behind him and wrestling the seatbelt into place, all before Linda had opened her side "Calm down Frankie.." She chuckled, clipping herself in and starting the car ".. We'll get there!"
"I know Ma!.." Frankie whined slightly ".. But I don't wanna be late!"
"We won't be.." She assured, backing out of the driveway and beginning the 45 minute drive to Mount Sinai hospital in New York ".. And even if we are.. he'll still be there!"
Huffing slightly, cos three quarters of an hour was just TOO LONG!.. Frankie turned on the radio and slouched in his seat, gazing out the window, and wishing today to be over already.
Just over an hour later, cos there was an accident at the other end of the Lincoln Tunnel, they arrived at their destination. After a further 20 minutes searching for a parking spot, they were FINALLY out of the car, and headed up to the ICU.
Frankie nervously chewed on his bottom lip as they waited for the elevator to slowly rise up the 5 floors. Why was it taking so long?
Eventually they reached the 5th floor, and turned left down the (by now familiar) corridor toward the unit.
As they turned the last corner, they saw Donna sat on a chair outside the room "Donna!" Frankie cheered, running the last few feet into her waiting arms, huge, happy grin stretched across his face.
"Hi Frankie.." She laughed, tiredly ".. He'll be pleased to see you. Hi Linda"
Linda wrapped Donna in a warm hug "Hi. How you doing?"
Donna hugged back for a moment, then let go and rubbed her face with both hands, before turning red, bleary eyes their way "I'm ok.." She murmured ".. Tired!"
Linda took her arm and led her back to the chair "You should go home and get some sleep.. You won't be any use if you're dropping down dead from exhaustion"
Donna smiled wryly "You REALLY think I'd leave him alone here?.." She shook her head ".. You know me better than THAT, Lin."
"Who's with him now?" Frankie asked, quietly, staring at the closed door.
"Dr. Phillips. He's been in about half an hour now" Donna looked at her hands "He said that if it didn't work today..." She trailed off, tears slipping from her eyes. They knew what she couldn't bring herself to say.
Gerard had been in a coma for the last 19 days, and the doctors had tried three times already to take him off the ventilator. This was to be their last attempt. If it failed, Donna would have to make the heartbreaking choice between placing her beautiful baby boy into a permanent care home, or allowing the machines that were keeping him alive, to be turned off.
She wasn't sure that she could choose.
Frankie sat down on the floor to the right of Gerard's door, knees up to his chest, and face buried in his arms.. He wouldn't let them see him cry.. Not again!
They all sat in silence and waited, Linda gently stroking her friend's hand and offering silent support.
She couldn't imagine how hard this was on Donna, and the fact that Don had gone back to Florida after just two days, meant that she was basically going through this alone. THAT'S why her and Frankie knew their way around the hospital as well as they did.. cos they spent every available minute there, trying to comfort Donna, as they prayed for a miracle they ALL knew may never happen.
Every day, Frankie fought to miss school, so that he could make the journey with his mother. Every day, she said "No!"
Today was Saturday!
It was about 20 minutes after they arrived, that the door eventually opened...
