Defying Death

Chapter 2

We are spending the night in the desert outside of one of Arizona’s larger communities run by the corrupt government and under the protection of UWP. Someone has set up a small radioing station out of an old desert gas station. We are staying in the concrete underground fallout shelter. It’s surprisingly cool and well-kept considering it was built in the sixties during the cold war.
Our hosts were always so gracious. They set us up with an actual good dinner and we sat around a small dimly lit table and played Cards Against Humanity despite the cards being wildly out of date, we still had a nice laugh. We followed up by having deep conversations with every person there. Every single one of them lost someone. “More Dread” lost his mother, his partner, his sister, and his father. All he had left were his friends he surrounded himself with there at the studio.
We then had our extremely important talk with them after everything died down. Explaining everything that will happen on “Day number X” when we would start the takeover. They would relay the message on a secure wave to the other Killjoys in the area. We showed them how to setup the device that’s been created for “Day Number X”.
Before it got too late they left us down in the shelter to get some rest before we would head out on the road in the next few hours.
I lay on the ground staring at the darkness that pressed against the walls of the room. We were short 2 cots, and I don’t mind sleeping on the ground, it was cooler anyway. Bandit and Rosalyn shared a cot and I let the guys take the other 3. Now-a-days it’s harder for me to sleep; I have so much coursing through my mind. It’s hard to cope with a reality I only dreamed about. I’m not surprised something like this happened, I just wasn’t expecting it to destroy as much as it did. I feel like I could fail Bandit without the help of her mother.
I felt a hand touch my shoulder.
“Hey,” Ray whispered to me.
“What’s up?” I turned to him in the dark. He sat next to me and helped me up.
“I could hear you breathing heavier than usual, is everything okay?”
I frowned, “I’ve been over thinking the situation, that’s all.”
He put his arm around me, “We lived in a van for a good long time in our 20s if we can do that, we can do anything bro.”
“That is about 20 years ago,” I smirked, “we aren’t that young anymore, but that’s not what I’m upset about.”
“Oh.”
“What if we fail, what if we are found, what will happen to Bandit?”
