Epilogue

Gerard's POV
They say that often, true love has been staring you in the face for a long time, and you wouldn't blink twice at that person. But then one day you realise, and your entire world changes. You change. You may not be the tough, badass person you once always seemed to be. You may even think yourself weak for caring so much about another person, while others may scorn you for it. But you cannot control who you love, even if you try. It's a thing you have to realise, and if the person you love turns out to have been your best friend all along, then so be it. You shouldn't try and hide your feelings because of fear, or any other reason. Because at the end of the day, that person might not still be there when the sun sets. And you might not get to say goodbye.

I was sitting up in bed for the first time since I came here, about a week ago. I was half numb and half in pain, but that physical pain was nothing compared to the the pain in my heart. It ached, and no amount of medicine could fix it. I knew that only time could do that, but I wasn't entirely sure if I could hold on long enough. Frank's untimely death would always be there - he would always have a piece of my heart that I could never get back.
The door opened and a nurse walked in, carrying a bag of fluids.
"Hi, Gerard", she said, smiling. "How are you this afternoon?"
"Fine, thanks", I muttered as she removed the empty bag from the end of the intravenous tube, attaching the full one. I winced as I felt the needle in my arm move slightly, and tried to cast my thoughts elsewhere.
Although I wasn't having much luck with that lately.
The nurse sat down on the end of my bed.
"Right, Gerard, just the daily tests again and then I'll leave you in peace", she grinned, and I allowed the corner of my lip to twitch slightly.
"Tell me your full name and age", she stated, clicking a pen against her clipboard.
"Gerard Arthur Way, 23", I replied, like I did every other day.
"Good", she mused, scribbling on some paper. "And, which country and state are you in currently?"
"America, Philadelphia"
"Where are you from?"
"New Jersey, America"
"Good. Why are you here?"
I sighed. I hated this question.
"I was fighting in the war. I was on watch when someone threw a grenade. I was flown back to America because I am now too injured to continue fighting, therefore my country no longer requires my services."
I saw her eyebrows twitch slightly, but she smiled anyway.
"Very good, thank you Gerard. Only a few more days of this to go, but it doesn't appear to seem like you will have any life-changing head injuries. Which is great right?"
"Yeah", I muttered, looking away.
"Gerard", the nurse asked gently. "Is there something wrong? You can tell me"
I was silent for a minute. There was no way I was going to tell her, but I didn't know if I'd be able to lie.
"No", I whispered finally. "No, there's nothing wrong."
"Good", she smiled, patting my knee as she got up, heading towards the door.
I felt more hollow than I had when I awoke, with the realisation that it had not been a dream.
But then the nurse stopped.
"Gerard". She called from the door.
"Yeah", I answered, without turning around.
"I have a surprise for you", she said.
That got my attention.
I looked over to find the nurse grinning from ear to ear. Then she opened the door and disappeared, and I was temporarily confused.
That is, until a thin figure in baggy clothes and leaning heavily on crutches came hobbling through the door.
I sat up straight, feeling joy for the first time since I'd awoken.
The figure looked up from where it'd stopped, two metres from my bed, grinning widely as he reached up to push his gasses further up his nose.
"Mikey", I breathed, feeling the first real smile creep over my face.
"Hi Gerard", he whispered.

The end.
