The Paper Kingdom
Prologue
Time...
It's always on our minds.
There's never enough when you need it. There's always too much when you don't. It keeps us on our toes. We waste it and we save it.
Time.
It decides if we're young or old. It tells you if you're early or late. We're always thinking about it. We have it, we don't have it, we lose track of it, we're checking it, we run out of it.
Time.
It dictates our life from when we're born to when we die.
From day one, we've been taught that time is our enemy and that we need to be on time, do certain things all the time, to have a good time, to watch the time.
Sometimes it goes on too quickly and it leaves us behind; there we are, left for dead, deserted when we least expect it and when we need time the most.
But it's also supposed to be on our side.
It's said to heal all wounds, but God knows that's not true. The pain I feel from years ago is still too much for today. The nightmares I get, the frightful nights where I wake up, my sheets in knots, drenched in sweat and a scream daring to escape my dry throat--it's all proof.
Time. It means nothing. It means everything.
