Breakfast Monkey

One

It was crisp autumn morning, I had woken up before my alarm clock went off. I stared at the watch until it hit 6:30. It was Monday, not that I had any plans besides taking the ferry on my way to New York for a meeting with the new staff of the comic book editorial I worked in. I went to the shower and took a quick bath, last few months I'd been feeling really numb to the things around me. After I finished getting ready I walked to the kitchen and prepared some coffee, I felt incomplete and zombie like without drinking any. I left home, no one was up. It was too early either way. While in the ferry I only thought about how the meeting was going to go, it was my first job after getting my degree, I wasn't very good with people but felt really excited about it. I got down of the ferry and rode the subway, it was completely full I couldn't even breathe and feared some of the sketches I had prepared for today would get ruined.
After a 45 minute session of experimenting what living in a tuna can was like I finally arrived to my stop. I checked the watch and noticed I had only 10 minutes to get there.
I ran through the chaotic streets of New York, I almost got hit by a bus but I made it on time.
On the meeting room I saw the usual people I worked with, no one new yet. I never really socialised with people around me, I had always been the awkward kid in school, college and now work. The president of the editorial came in, he rambled on about how things would change, the image of the company would change and whilst in the transition us artists were going to have more freedom; in other words they needed a new project and wanted to steal one from us. Later, he introduced two new artists a man who was about my age and a young female.
She had red-brown hair, light brown ayes covered by big black framed glasses, her lips were pretty thick and pink, her skin was light and had heavy eyeliner on. She was wearing a plane white shirt, a dark blue hoodie and black jeans.
"Team, I would like you to meet our two new artists: Matt and Sophia. They're both grads from Germany but are Americans. I trust you guys will make both of them feel comfortable while they're here"
The entire crew laughed and smiled at them, they both looked pretty nervous.
"Well then, with that said you guys can go back to work. Matt, Sophia, I'll show you to your working places. Follow me"
A few girls from the finance department had already been trashing Sophia and checking out Matt. He was very attractive indeed, he was very tall, had a beard and long brown hair up to his earlobe. His eyes were green, he as well wore big glasses like Sophia and was wearing completely black clothes. He definitely looked stylish and mysterious I guess women like that. I on the other hand wasn't as skinny as him but we were probably the same height. My hair was long and I had recently dyed it black. I was wearing black clothes too but definitely not as stylised as his, Europe was certainly a very fashionable continent.
Throughout the day I saw Sophia working on some sketches, her working table was a couple away from mine. Since it was the first day, she only talked to Matt. She looked very intriguing, her voice sounded a bit deeper than the average female voice but it was nice. From time to time I saw her getting really close to him, for some reason it made me uncomfortable. I felt really stupid, as if I were Jean Baptiste from The Perfume.
The day went by pretty fast and before I knew it I had to go home. I looked at the studio, it was empty. I spotted the new guys talking in what I suppose was German, they were leaving. They looked closer now, he had his arm around her shoulder and they even laughed together. While I was gathering my stuff, I was usually the last one to leave, I heard someone coming inside again. It was her, she had forgotten her sketch pad. She looked at me and smiled shyly.
"Hi, I don't think we had time to introduce ourselves. My name's Sophia, I'm a new artist here"
"Yeah I was in the meeting" I answered bitterly. Her smile started to fade away and turned into a poker face.
"Okay well, uhm, have a nice evening"
"I'm Gerard, and thank you. You too."
She faked a smile and walked looking down, I didn't understand why I was being so mean to her.
