First and Last

Private Conversations

Under the back lamp light, Gerard pulled a pack of cigarettes out of his back pocket and offered one to Blue. She accepted it and held it out while he lit it for her.
Once he took a drag off of it, Gerard sighed, blowing the smoke away through his mouth and nose. Blue watched as it curled upward and evaporated into the night sky before she took a drag on hers, coughing lightly.
“Not much of a smoker, huh?” Gerard asked.
“I used to be,” Blue answered, staring at it, “but, my sister used to roll ours. We used receipts from stores, a cotton ball, and, sometimes, chamomile leaves from my mom’s garden out back. I quit after my aunt’s mother died from lung cancer.”
Gerard nodded, while taking another drag, “What was it like?”
Blue looked at him, “Huh?”
“Growing up for you? What was it like?”
“Normal I guess,” she said, looking up at the stars, “I had a mom, dad, a younger sister, and an older brother. Dad had some drinking issues after he lost his job. He got back on his feet though after mom beat some sense into him. She lost her job after her company was over-run by another. She became a stay-at home telemarketer. My brother left to join the army. He’s in Afghanistan now, don’t know when he’ll be home. And my sister is graduating high school next year.”
He nodded, dropping his cigarette on the ground and squishing it under his booted foot. Blue watched Gerard as he crossed his arms over his chest and sighed, a puff of air rolling out of his mouth.
“My dad left a long time ago. Mom always supported me and Mikey and the decisions we made. Even if we struggled with something, she always pushed us to do better. I never thought I’d make it this far in life, especially with…”
“The depression?” Blue asked.
Gerard looked at her, his dark hazel eyes piercing through the darkness, “How did you know?”
Blue shrugged her shoulders, finally dropping her unfinished cigarette onto the pavement, “It’ll sound weird. And I don’t want to be weird around you because I love your music…”
Gerard gently took her hand, squeezing it lightly, “Tell me Blue. I want to know, I promise I won’t think any less of you.”
Blue looked at him and sighed, “I’ve got kind of a sixth sense. I know if someone is sad, depressed, excited, or happy about something. I’ve always tried to make people feel better if they were having a rough time or needed someone to lean on.”
Gerard nodded, putting his hand back into his coat pocket, “You were depressed then?”
She nodded, “In high school. I was teased a lot because I was shy and not-so-social. I didn’t even go to prom because I was socially awkward and I never made any true friends.”
He nodded in agreement, “High school sucks ass big time.”
Blue smiled slightly and felt her cheeks burn. Gerard Way was defiantly more than she could ever hope he could be. He was funny, nice, and it also seemed he was socially awkward too. He smiled at her.
She looked up at him, and for a moment, it felt like a dream. Until Frank poked his head outside the door.
“Hey, Gee! It’s almost time to start the second half!”
“I’ll be right there Frankie. Give me a sec.”
“Sure thing!” and he disappeared behind the door.
Blue turned to go back inside when Gerard grabbed her arm. She turned to look back at him.
“Blue… can I ask you something? It’s kind of embarrassing, but I want to know anyway.”
She nodded, her lips parted slightly.
“Do you have a cell phone?”
***
Blue was just putting her cell phone away as Missy came running up to her.
“OMiGod Blue! I need details! What happened out there? Did he totally ask you?”
She furrowed her brow at Missy, “Ask me what?”
“Asked you to have sex of course! All the guys were saying how Gee always talked to the woman who had a backstage pass in PRIVATE!!!”
Missy sang that last word like some drunken-idiot.
Blue shook her head and followed the guard back outside to the stage, “No. We just talked.”
“About what Blue? COME ON! I’m DYING over here! Tell me what happened!”
She looked at her co-worker and laughed, “Just about our childhood and what we think we’re going to get out of life. Same old stuff you hear every day.”
Missy groaned, hanging forward with that anguish look on her face like someone had slapped her too many times. “‘Just about our childhood’ my ass, Blue! There has to be more that that!”
“We had a cigarette.”
“You mean you both shared one or you each had one?”
“Had one each.”
“I didn’t even know you smoked. You don’t smell like it, but you do now.”
“I haven’t had a cigarette for two years Sherlock.”
Missy lifted her hands in defeat as they entered the crowd. They found their spot up front as the band’s music drew the crowd back in.
***
At the end of the show, Missy and Blue followed the crowd to get the band’s autographs on a CD Blue recently purchased. As the band sighed it, Blue noticed how they winked and laughed at her in a friendly sort of way. Mikey blushed after he handed the CD back to her.
Blue turned and saw Gerard at the edge of the table. He smiled genuinely before she gave the CD to him and he autographed it really quick with a small message. He smiled and leaned forward, kissing her on the cheek.
Blue gasped in surprise as he winked at her and said, “That was from Frank.”
Everyone laughed and Blue and Melissa slipped into Blue’s car, driving off into the night.
