First and Last

The Concert

By the time Blue and Melissa hit the city, it was around five o’clock and both of them were famished. They found a quaint little restaurant not far from their hotel, where they both stopped for dinner.
By the time they were finished, and quite exhausted from the travel, they both decided the best option was to head to the hotel, check in, and go to bed.
The following morning, Blue’s eyes fluttered open to see Missy with two cups of freshly brewed coffee.
“G’morning,” Blue sighed, standing up and stretching her legs.
“G’morning,” Missy said, offering her a cup, “How did you sleep?”
“Not half bad, although your snoring kept me up a good portion of the night though.”
Melissa laughed, “That wasn’t me! That was you, snoring like an animal in the middle of hibernation!”
Blue chuckled, taking a drink of coffee and sighed.
“So,” Melissa began as she headed toward the bathroom to shower, “any ideas of what to do until five tonight?”
“I thought we’d explore the downtown area. It’s been a while since I’ve been here,” Blue replied, placing her cup on the bedside table.
“You’ve been here before?”
“Yeah, I lived in Chicago til I was five, then mom and dad decided to move to Oshkosh and see what it was like there.”
Melissa poked her head out of the bathroom, “And you never told me?”
“You never asked,” Blue smiled mischievously.
***
By three pm, Blue had shown Melissa around a good portion of downtown Chicago. Both girls explored the bakery shops, clothing designers, and even found enough money to squeeze into buying their own lunches at a coffee shop where Blue’s brother worked before they moved.
When they pulled into the parking lot, a crowd of teens had already shown up and were crowding closer and closer towards the gates as the time for the concert drew near.
Blue and Melissa lined up just as the gates opened and the fans crowded in. the ticket lady looked at both of their tickets, scanned them and called over a security guard.
“Are we in trouble?” Melissa asked nervously, watching the lady talk to the guard.
“I sure as hell hope not,” Blue whispered back.
The guard came over and asked, “You’re the girls with the VIP tickets, right?”
“Yep,” Blue nodded anxiously.
“We’ve just encountered a slight problem,” the guard began.
“Are our tickets forged?” Melissa squeaked out.
The guard smiled and laugh, “No! no, everything’s in order, it’s just that you will have to wait until half time to meet with the band and get a tour of the place. Had you been in earlier, we would’ve been given plenty of time to show you around and meet the guys.”
“Oh! Okay. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, enjoy the show!”
The girls smiled and headed into the venue.
The stage was set up on the far side of the venue. Gates and security guards surrounded every inch of the stage. Some of the instruments had been set up, the drum set, a couple of guitars and mic-stands scattered themselves over the stage.
Blue and Melissa pushed their way through the crowd toward the front where their seats, or standing places, were. They had a good upfront view and Blue pulled her camera out and snapped a photo of the stage.
“How many photos will you take?” Melissa asked over the screams of a few fans.
“Enough to cover a whole wall in my bedroom,” Blue chuckled snapping another photo of the instruments.
The curtain went down and the lights dimmed. A distant beep-beep sound echoed through the stadium and then the lights shone on a pale figure. His hair was ebony-black and he wore a black marching band jacket, black jeans, and black boots.
“Come on, come on, to this tragic fair… wipe of that make-up, what’s in is despair…”
The fans screamed as a voice, much like that of a fallen angel, sang out the opening lines. Melissa turned to Blue and saw that her jaw had dropped and her eyes were wide and sparkling with happiness and hope.
That must be Gerard Way, she thought. Melissa nudged Blue, who snapped out of her shock and snapped a photo, just as the curtains raised to reveal the band. Fans cheered loud as the song came to end.
“Hello Chicago!!!” Gerard screamed and began again, “And if your heart stops beating, I’ll be there one day, wait to get what you deserve…”
Blue snapped a few more photos and showed them to Melissa to get her input.
As the band played on, Blue couldn’t have thought she could be happier.
