From Russia With Love

Chapter Forty-three - Vozmozhnosti

Dominika’s bedroom was dim aside from the small halo of dim light cast from the lamp on her nightstand as she lay among her pillows, flicking through her choreography notes half-heartedly. Every now and again thunder rumbled in the distance, accompanied by a low clap of lightening that illuminated the room in brief flashes of white light. She was trying to concentrate on the page in front of her, but the wild weather outside was distracting, and eventually she tossed her notes aside in frustration.

Her cell phone buzzed on the mattress beside her, the noise cutting through the quiet of the room between the clashes of lightning. Dominika sniggered to herself as Gerard’s name flashed onto the screen, retrieving the phone so she could read the entire message.

She knew he’d crack.

It had been a week since her unexpectedly bold proposal in relation to their physical relationship, and they’d tried to limit the night visits in order to give Gerard a chance to heal properly. Well, partially that and also the fact Donna had sprung them asleep in Gerard’s bed together one morning, and although she’d seemed embarrassed rather than disapproving, Dominika couldn’t help but feel a little awkward that she’d found out that way. It hadn’t been brought up again however, and Dominika had decided to relax and let Donna work it out on her own rather than go out of her way to mention it and risk making things even more awkward.

His message was short, as they always were, texting not being one of his strong points.

Scared of the storm, baby?

A loud clap of thunder made the windows shake in their frames, making her jump halfway through typing her reply.

No. Shouldn’t you be asleep, or are you the one that’s scared?

With extra love and attention from Dominika and plenty of physiotherapy sessions during the week, Gerard had abandoned use of the wheelchair and was now able to get around on his set of crutches, albeit slowly considering his leg was still encased in a bulky cast. His facial injuries showed vast improvement too, almost all of the swelling gone and the even the darkest of his bruises had faded to shades of yellow and faint blues. Every day he looked a little more like his old self again. Dominika’s phone vibrated in her hand and she glanced at the screen, smiling to herself.

I probably should be sleeping but it’s hard to relax when I know you’re a few feet away in that little pink thing…unless you’re wearing something else?

She tapped out her reply quickly, blushing.

If I told you you’d never sleep again.

Her heart caught in her throat as she read his answer.

I’m willing to risk it. Why don’t you come here so we can find out?

After only a few seconds of deliberation, Dominika peeled herself out of the warmth of her blankets and tip-toed barefoot across the icy tile floor of their bathroom. Lightning flashed across the grounds, visible through the windows as it lit up the fields around them momentarily. She eased the sliding door open, heat prickling her cold cheeks as she took in the sight of Gerard, bare-chested and laying at ease in the huge bed. His eyes smoldered as he took in her form in the doorway. She’d switched her pink pajamas to a black set, another bias-cut tank top and a pair of lacy boy-shorts.

“You’re killing me, kid” he groaned.

“Hey, I warned you” she retorted, retreating to her usual side of the bed. Dominika scooted closer to him underneath the pale sheet, goose bumps raising along her skin as they made contact, his body warm and welcoming in comparison to hers, chilled by exposure to the night air.

Gerard’s arm snaked around her waist and they were chest-to-chest, her breathing heavy.

“I’m a sucker for punishment”

He crashed his lips to hers, and his body was on fire, longing with every touch to have her as his but knowing it just wasn’t possible yet. His hands bunched the material of her top, urging her closer as he looked back at her face. Her eyes were wide with surprise and he mentally scolded himself, not wanting to pressure her. He shifted his body back a little, easing his grip. A sheepish grin crossed his face, causing Dominika’s heart to flutter in her heaving chest.

“Sorry” he murmured “Sometimes it’s hard not to get carried away with you”

“Don’t apologize” she replied softly. Dominika was quiet, her eyes cast downwards as she traced her feather-light fingertips down the length of Gerard’s bare arm, threading her pale fingers through his when she reached the palm of his hand. Slowly, with a slight tremble, Dominika moved Gerard’s hand underneath the hem of her tank top, his heart rate spiking as he made contact with her bare skin. He looked back at her again and this time her eyes were confident, decided.

He dipped his lips to her neck as his hand travelled further beneath the thin material, the sound of his own heart pumping excitedly behind his ears drowning out any other noise in the room. It caught in his throat when his hand reached the soft, full crescent of her breast. A tiny gasp escaped her lips as his thumb grazed her nipple and he smiled against her throat, amused. His lips were at her ear then, his hot breath making the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end.

“You like making this hard for me, don’t you?”

“Maybe” she replied, a smile playing at the edges of her mouth.

“You’re cruel, kid”
