From Russia With Love

Chapter Twenty-six - Iz Rossii s lyubov'yu

The sun was low in the sky when Donna greeted her that afternoon, Dominika bounding in the front door, grinning from ear to ear.

“How did it go?” Donna asked eagerly.

“I got in!” she yelled ecstatically, throwing her arms around Donna’s neck in an unusual outburst of emotion. Donna laughed and squeezed her tightly, patting her back.

“Well done, Domi, I knew you could do it”

“Thank you, Donna. For organizing it all too, I really appreciate it” Dominika said, grasping her hand for a moment.

“You’re welcome dear, it’s just nice to see you smiling” she said “When do you start?”

“I have my first class in the morning! John already knows, he’s going to pick me up” she said, rocking back and forth on the heels of her feet. Her heart was bursting with excitement of what was to come, one of her dreams finally coming to fruition.

“Excellent. Now, Donald will be home in about a half an hour, and we’ll have an early dinner to celebrate, are you hungry?”

“Absolutely. I’ll just go put my bag in my room and change”

Dominika began to head towards the staircase but paused when Donna spoke.

“Some mail arrived for you today, I put it on your dresser” she said, winking at her before she disappeared into the formal lounge room. Dominika took the steps two at a time, intrigued but also confused about who the mail could have been from. She hadn’t been expecting anything.

Inside her bedroom, her bed had been re-made with fresh linen and the carpet newly vacuumed. Probably the work of the cleaner Donna had mentioned in passing the other day. She quickly spied the white envelope lying in the center of her dressing table, thick black block writing on the front spelled out her name and the address of the house, her heart beat erratically as she instantly recognized the writing.

Dominika’s hands shook as she carefully opened the envelope and extracted the single piece of folded cream paper from inside. Her eyes blurred with tears before she even started reading, making it hard to decipher the words on the page. She brushed them away with her free hand, shaking her head, trying to pull herself together.

My dearest Dominika,

You’ll be happy to know things here are looking up, we’ve just regained control of St. Petersburg and the citizens there are in good health.

The weather is getting colder and I’m sure we’ll see snow on the ground soon.
I hope the States are treating you well and you’re enjoying yourself over there.

Missing me yet?

I miss you.

Dad told me you’re going to audition for Uncle Gio’s ballet company this week. Give ‘em hell kid, I know you will.

I’ve been stationed at the Base the last two weeks, but I’m moving to a temporary camp near Novgorod in ten days’ time, apparently the conditions are rough but nothing we haven’t seen before. I bet you’re sleeping in a fluffy, gilded bed.

You can write back to the return address on the back of the envelope, tell me all about your adventures as a Russian-American.

Say hi to Mom and Dad for me.

From Russia with love,

Xoxo G

Tears ran down her face freely now and she wiped them away, not really understanding why they were there in the first place. Gerard was okay, Gerard was in good spirits, they were regaining control, so why did she have this pit of fear churning in her stomach? His letter had obviously been intended to comfort her, but now she had an intense longing to be near him, to be wrapped in his arms again, even for just a moment. Dominika held the piece of paper to her chest and sighed deeply, mustering the strength to regain her composure.

She tucked the paper back into its envelope and then slipped it into the drawer of her nightstand. In the bathroom, she brushed through her hair and splashed water on her face, attempting to erase any evidence of her emotional outburst. She changed into casual pants and a jumper and trudged downstairs to the formal sitting room.

Donna was sitting on one of the green couches and raised her head as Dominika entered, concern clouding her features as she studied Dominika’s face.

“Are you okay, Domi?”

“I’m fine” Dominika replied softly “the letter was from Gerard, just had a girl moment”

Donna’s features lightened then and she chuckled quietly, patting the space on the seat next to her, gesturing for Dominika to sit.

“I know, it’s hard isn’t it? I miss both my sons. It’s okay to have a bit of a cry here and there”

“I never used to be a crier” Dominika said, contemplating how different her life and even she had become in such a short period of time.

“It’s a difficult time Domi, and it changes all of us”
