Developing Wings on the Way Down
Part Twenty-One; The Startling Image of Unfamiliarity
The sound of the tumblers in the front door clicking followed by the squeal and thump of the hinges didn't cause but a stir to Gerard as he lie nested in his mess of a bed beside Frank. When he heard his parents' footsteps in the upper level of the house, he was jarred from his sleep in a sudden panic. His eyes widened as he flung his sleep-ridden self out of bed and up the stairs. Frank groggily stood up and followed Gerard as he charged the wooden steps, picking up the bag of money that sit at the top from a lazy toss amidst the tired ending of last night. He pivoted on his foot and threw it down to Frank just as Donna spotted him. Frank caught the mass with an 'oof' and stumbled before snapping his wings out and falling on his arse, barely kicking the door shut.
"Well who was that Gerard?" she asked, glancing down the stairs. "Is Mikey down there?"
Gerard considered saying yes until he saw the brown mousy hair come around the corner. Damn it Mikey.
"No. It's uh, it's a friend I had over last night." he said, crossing his fingers behind his back.
"Well that's great Gerard!" she smiled. "You never have anyone over anymore! Let me meet him!" she said, pushing past the anxious teenager. Gerard's eyes grew large as he looked to Mikey for help. The shaggy haired teenager's eyes widened as well as he shrugged, hands up in surrender as he struggled for words. When Gerard turned the door was being slowly pulled open. He sped down the stairs but couldn't get past Donna, and could only look over her shoulder into the room where Frank huddled in the corner, quaking in shock and worry. Not a word was uttered for a good ten minutes as the four stared at each other.
"Mom I-" Gerard started, trying to string a sentence together. But how is he supposed to explain this, really? Mikey had already slowly sat down on the bed and resumed his usually 'I'm not going to speak, don't ask me' posture. "He's harmless?" was all the older brother could say.
"H-hello there." she finally said, extending an arm. That's all she could do. The thing is, no one really knows what to say, or even imagines that situation, so like a badly-planned play, this was a stumbling improvisation. Frank slowly reached to her hand, Gerard just now noticed how off his skin looked compared to anyone alive.. or maybe he had forgotten.
"I'm Fra-"
"Frank Iero." Donna nodded, shaking his hand lightly. Her whole body quaked as she stared at him. "The tattoos, the eyes, you are... you have to be.. Frank Iero. Linda has showed me so many pictures of you..." she shook harder as his wings pricked with discomfort and his eyes filled with sadness.
"Mom, Frank is-" Gerard started, only to become the second to be interrupted.
"He's an angel. He has to be. You know, I once heard some people can come back to avenge their deaths.." her ramblings went on and Gerard made an 'X' sign at Frank from behind her to keep him from revealing the truth. He couldn't honestly say he knew how she would react. After all, she was being rather calm considering the fact a winged paranormal entity is squatting in her basement. The group was reminded of the brothers father when the sound of rolling luggage filled their ears. Donna gave one last smile to the 'angel' before turning to her sons.
"I'll be upstairs." she said, giving them both a stern look. As she ascended up the stairs, the boys all stared at each other.
"What just happened?" Mikey asked, still staring at the floor. Gerard raised his shoulders in wonder as he walked to Frank, still huddled in the corner.
"Are you alright?"
"Yeah, I thought she was a psycho intruder at first." he responded, standing up and inadvertently making eye contact with Gerard, making him freeze.
