Developing Wings on the Way Down

Part Eighteen; Splitting Hairs to Avoid the Small Talk

Bob walked back and fourth behind the boys, watching them all aim and fire at some cardboard cut outs he had scored from the block buster dumpster. Out of the three, Gerard had the best shot. This quite obviously captivated Frank. The demon slowly lowered his pistol to his side, turning the safety on and watching Gerard attentively, the way the boy's arms flexed, showing how lean he really was, and a fraction of his tongue stuck out onto his upper lip as he shot. The reflection of the spark from the bullets on his sunglasses mesmerized Frank. It completed the whole look that sent shivers all up Frank's spine.
This was to be the last gun practice before their infiltration on the UAX Kings. There was a high level of tension surrounding the boys at all times. None of them voiced their fear and anticipation, but they felt it. The day was the one thing Frank insisted on. The day before Halloween. The day it happened. They only talked about it in skiffs and short phrases every now and then, but given the fact it was October 29th, they all knew they should face it and make their plan soon. Real soon.
"Well boys, I think we're done here." Bob said, nodding approvingly. "I hate to say I'm proud of all you fuckers but I am."
Frank walked over to the bearded man, hand out stretched and holding the gun.
"No, I believe this is where we part ways. Keep em'." the man replied, "I'm all packed up at home and ready to move back to Chicago. I have unattended business there." He kept his 'mysterious Bob' thing going well for him as he grabbed three large cases of ammunition out of the back of his truck and sat them on the ground. "This should be enough. And the papers for those gens are in one of the boxes.
Frank put his gun on the ground and sped forward, wrapping his arms around Bob's neck.
"Thank you for everything."
"Yeah, I'm not all that into hugging." The blonde objected, putting his hand on Frank's chest to attempt detaching him. No avail. The brothers presented more 'manly' pardons before leaving the area.

At home that night, the boys sat around the table, eating their dinner quietly. Each of them stared at the dark wood of the table. They had discussed the plan and discussed it well. Everything was in line by ten thirty. Eventually, Franks stood and excused himself to bed. Soon after, the older brother followed suit. He jogged down the steps to see the demon laying in his bead again, almost asleep. He quietly laid down by his side and smiled at him despite the current situation.
"Hey Frankie."
"Hey 'rard"
"Are you doing all right?" Genuine concern crossed the boy's face as he studied every aspect of Frank's face. Surprisingly enough, he smiled.
"I'm kind of happy. I feel like this will make things better.. and it will, right?" he asked, a hopeful look plastered on his paled face.
"I can't answer that.. I don't really know." Gerard sighed, putting a sympathetic hand on Frank's and rubbing his thumb over the calloused skin there. To another surprise, Frank turned his hand over and let his tattooed fingers nestle between Gerard's barren ones.
