The Highways I Call Home

A little tinkling of the bell on the shop door sounded, and five minutes later a gasp came from a man beside the couple.

"Woah. Woah. Frank, is that you?"

Frank broke off the kiss and looked up to see two familiar faces staring at him, each holding a cup of coffee.

"Oh. Shit. Hi Ray.. and Bob.." he said, completely embaraased. He looked at Gerard apologetically. He had completely forgot the reason he had come to this coffee shop in the first place!

"Sorry to interrupt, man." Ray said before sliding into the seat next to Frank. Bob sat next to Gerard, who was looking very uncomfortable. "So are you two.. um..together? I thought you just moved here.."

Frank blushed and looked towards Gerard. "Well we kinda just met..."

"..and were smooching in a public coffee shop!" Ray interrupted, sounding astounded. Frank's face blushed a deep red and he picked at the strings of his jacket, guiltily averting his gaze from the other men.

"I think it's fucking cute!" Ray said, his face beaming and looking between him and Gerard. Then, stopping at Frank, "Little man, I have a lot to get to know about you," he continued, adding a wink at the end.

Gerard adjusted in his seat with a scowl on his face, obviously taking it in the wrong way.

"Not like that.. dude I'm straight, trust me." he said to Gerard, holding his hands up and laughing.

Bob chirped in,"Didn't seem too straight with me last night!"

Ray laughed and slugged him in the arm. "Shut up Bob!"

Gerard's eyes grew wide.

"It was a joke, don't worry." Bob said with a chuckle.

Gerard sighed, now loosening up and joining in with the laughter. They all talked and bantered on for a while before Ray concluded the coffee gathering.

"Well, should we start our tour of the city? Gerard, you're more than welcome to come."

"Thanks, but I should probably get going." he replied.

"Gerard, please come! It'll be fun!" Frank encouraged, flashing him a hopeful smile.

"Ya, c'mon! Let's go!" Ray said and they all stood up.

Gerard looked at Frank with sad eyes,"I'm sorry, but I'm just gonna go. I don't want to intrude. Bye Frank,"

He stepped towards him, reaching a hand up and stroking his cheek with his thumb. He leaned in, their lips nearly touching, before he let go and walked towards the door.

Frank stood there in shock. He wanted him to stay. He couldn't go. No. He had just met him! How could he just leave this fast! This guy was special. He couldn't let him go. He needed to be able to contact him or else he might lose him..forever.

"Wait, Gerard come back!" he called, running after him. His delay had allowed Gerard enough time to get into his car.


"No! Please!" Frank cried, now out of the shop. Gerard's engine has started and he was pulling out of his parking spot.

"I might never see you again," Frank whispered, tears forming in his eyes as he watched the car drive away, carrying within it the man he loved.
