Chapter Three
-Gerards POV-
I came back into the room to see Marina laying in my bed with comic books spread around her. She looked up at me and smiled.
"Do you like any of them?" I asked her, sitting on the bed.
"Yeah they're interesting. I really like these ones." She said, holding up an issue of The Umbrella Academy.
I raised an eyebrow at her. "Yeah? What do you like about them?" I moved to sit next to her on the bed, if me being this close to her bothered her, she didn't show it.
"I just like the story, the art is really good."
"See the drawings are alright. I happen to think they were better when I did them but the art department wanted them redone. The story however, I'm proud of that."
She looked at me in confusion. "What do you mean? Are you saying you wrote this?"
"Gerard Way at your service." I watched her eyes widen with surprise.
"What? Did you think my actual name was Party Poison?" I chuckled at her red face.
"I don't know what I thought." She said. "But I didn't think the leader of the rebellion would have been a comic book writer before all this happened."
"Weren't we all just normal people before this happened?" I took the comic book from her.
"I guess you're right."
"What did you do before all this happened?"
"I was in college. I was going to major in human resources and help people." She looked at me bitterly. "Lot of good that would have done huh?"
"Well you tried. Or you were going to at least. The world needs more people who are willing to try." She shook her head.
"I guess. So tell me about the radio you mentioned." She leaned against the bed frame and wiggled her toes.
"It's right over there, we use it to hear the broadcasts from others who are on the run. They mostly come from a friend of ours, Dr. Death Defying. He lets everyone know what's happening. Keeps our spirits up. It helps to know that others are fighting the same things we are, and maybe we aren't so alone out here in this wasteland." I gestured towards the window where I could see the desert stretching on for miles. It was beginning to get dark.
"Party- Gerard, can I ask you something?"
"Anything, and yes you can call me Gerard. We really only use those code names when we're out and about."
"Umm, are you going to sleep here? I mean, like am I going to sleep with you? In this bed?" I saw her cheeks go a little red and I hoped she didn't think I was going to take advantage of her.
I chuckled. "Well it is my bed, and we don't really have anywhere else to put you. With your leg you really shouldn't be sleeping on the ground. If it makes you uncomfortable I can sleep on the floor."
"Oh, no I didn't mean you have to sleep on the floor, it is your bed. I was just curious I guess." She said. She looked back down at the comic books that were spread across the bed.
"It's getting late." I told her. "We rise with the sun so I hope you're prepared for that." I started putting the comic books back into the box. Just then it occured to me that she was still wearing the clothes she had arrived in.
"Do you want to borrow one of my shirts? You know to sleep in?" I asked her, glancing over my shoulder.
"Yeah okay, but you have to leave the room while I change." She sounded dead serious.
"I was planning on it anyway." I retorted, tossing a large black shirt at her.
I waited outside the bedroom door for five minutes waiting for Marina to change. I knew she was hurt but did it really take that long to take off your clothes and throw a big shirt on?
"Rina?" I called through the door. "Are you done yet?"
"Just a minute!" She yelled.
I waited another five minutes.
"What's taking so long?" I banged on the door.
"I'm fine!" She yelled. "Just give me a minute."
I waited another thirty seconds before opening the door. Marina was lying on the floor near the bed, her pants around her ankles and her hands struggling to take her socks off. I laughed so hard I snorted.
"Need some help?" I stared down at her.
"Don't fucking look at me like that, it's hard okay?"
"Hey woah, it's fine, it's just kind of funny alright? No hard feelings." I sat down beside her and pulled her socks off. When she didn't struggle I pushed her hands away and pulled her jeans off too. Her thighs were pale and smooth.
"Come on love." She wrapped her arms around my waist and let me put her back in the bed.
"Alright well now I have to change, so I suggest you not look." I said, teasing her for being so self conscious. I watched as she actually covered her face with her hands. Shrugging, I pulled my shirt off and stripped down to my boxers. I flicked the lamp off and slid under the covers.
"Alright you can look now." I told her. I saw her blink in the newfound darkness and turn over onto the side of her leg that wasn't hurt. Conviently, it was also the side that was facing me.
"Goodnight." She whispered.
"Goodnight." I said.

I woke up a few hours later to the sound of thrashing and quiet whimpering. I sat up almost immediately.
"Marina?! Marina are you okay?" I turned on the lamp next to the bed. She was curled into a ball on the other side of the bed. She didn't say anything but I could see her shaking.
"Marina?" I touched her arm. She jerked away from me, lerching towards the edge of the bed and the floor. I grabbed her before she could fall off. It was just my instinct to pull her to me. In this moment she was just so little and vunerable. She whimpered but didn't try to fight me.
"Marina tell me what's wrong." She rolled over and wrapped her arms around me. That's alright, if she didn't want to talk to me she didn't have to. I held her against me and stroked her hair until her calmed down. She clung tight to me as her breathing evened out. I was about to fall asleep again when she spoke.
"I had a nightmare. I'm sorry.. For waking you up. I didn't mean to." I pressed her against my chest in a makeshift hug.
"It's alright, I don't mind. As long as you're okay."
"Thank you." She sighed. "For caring."
"You can tell me about it if you want, I'll listen, but you don't have to. I understand if you don't want to talk about it.
"Maybe some other time." She whispered. She started to lean away from me and I opened my arms to let her go.
"If you need anything I'll be right here." I whispered. I wished she wouldn't lean away. I heard light snoring, she was already asleep. I gently pulled her back into my arms, figuring she wouldn't mind too much.
I laid in bed and held her, just thinking. It had been a long time since I had just held someone like this. This girl was almost a stranger to me and yet here I was holding her and comforting her after she had a nightmare. It felt weird to say I had feelings for her. In the past I wouldn't even admit to liking someone until at least a second date. The unpredictabilty of a rebels life made me realize that every opportunity needed to be seized and life was too short for doubt.
