Blooming

Planted

I stood in the driveway. My large-new but antique-house loomed before me. Chipping fading paint, dusty windows, and a rusty gate added to the scenery. My baby sister, just two years old, Callandra, was sitting in my arms. She was heavy against my shoulder, lightly dozing. The boys were taking boxes out of the moving van. They said, “You’re a fragile little girl. We got this, you take care of Cali.” So, I held her. I have three brothers. There’s Jetson, who’s 15, and his twin, Trevor. Jetson has black hair, almost black eyes, and is pale as hell. Trevor has sandy blonde hair, blue eyes, slightly tan and has a few freckles. Trevor is eight minutes older, and never lets Jetson forget it. They are tight as hell, and I hope they never stop. Then there’s Alec. He’s 16 and basically takes care of us. He has blonde hair and green eyes, pale skin and a thin white scare running from ear, across his cheek, to around the corner of his mouth. Life ran through his veins like electricity through wires. I have a little sister I mentioned earlier as well. Her name is Callandra and she’s just two years old. Curly, almost white, blonde hair tumbled from her head. She has crazy blue-green eyes and is a healthy tan. Cali’s one of those babies that belly giggles at everything. And I? My name is Lenoxez. Just call me Lenny, please? I have dark brown hair, brown eyes, a light tan and glasses. I’m pretty normal looking, I guess. Despite the two white lines on my bottom lip from ripped out snakebites, but that is a total different story. I’m fourteen and take on the role as Mom in our little family. I take care of the baby, the boys, I clean up a lot, and I stay strong. The only one I really turn to with my problems is Alec. As a result, Calie calls Alec and I, Daddy and Mommy. Mom’s a trashy whore. She goes around, sleeping with anyone. In fact, the only kids fully related are the twins and Alec and Cali. That might not seem like a lot, but that’s three different guys. While she was married! And, I don’t even know my father. He’s either a: doctor, nurse, drug dealer, bouncer, dead, or married. Narrowed it down for me, huh? As for my Dad, he’s Alec and Cali’s dad. He’s the only one who came back for us. Before he knew about Alec, mom cheated on him. So, he left. Understandable. Then, Mom got with another guy after Alec was born, and had the twins. That guy stuck around until they were three, that’s when she cheated AGAIN. She then had me. The twins’ dad left, and we went on for eleven years without a male figure. Then Alec’s dad came back for a year (Alec tracked him down and took a bus to tell him), and we learned to love him. They had Cali and got married. Now, he’s trying to adopt the twin’s and I so he can then fight for sole custody. Great, right? But Mom is in some Central American country cheating on Dad. Dad is in Asia on a business trip. Like always. I was drawn from my long-drawn-out thoughts as Cali made a surprise noise. “Don’t cry tonight. Not now, my love. I’ll see you in another light as they drown from your eyes. Just don’t cry tonight. Hold on for me, my love. I stand by the wind if it means I’ll get to keep you. From blowing away. Just don’t cry m love away. Just don’t cry.” I rocked back and forth as I sung the melody to her. She relaxed again, and I breathed a sigh of relief. “Pretty.” Said a voice behind me. I jumped, making Cali look at me with her big eyes. I turned around to see a group of eight adults, and one kid. Knew these people. Well, I knew who they were. The man holding the baby girl continued, “Did you write it?” “Yes.” I precisely answered in a quiet voice. The twins’ voices halted their mumbling, and I heard one run around. “Manners Gerard,” the shortest, fake chastised. He turned his eyes to me, and gave a warm smile. “I’m Frank, this is my wife Jamia.” I barely got a smile out before the rest started to introduce themselves. “I’m Ray, and this beautiful woman is my wife Krista.” “Alicia, and my husband Mikey.” “I’m Gerard and this is my wife Lyn-Z.” He took a second to grin at the little girl on his hip. “And this is my daughter-“ “Our daughter.” Corrected Lyn-Z. “Yeah, yeah. Whatever. Our daughter, Bandit.” They looked so proud. “It’s a pleasure to meet you all,” I smiled. Voices were arguing in the back ground. “My name is Lenoxez, but please call me Lenny. This here is Callandra, but she likes Cali.” I shifted the little girl on my hip. Frank opened his mouth to speak, but was cut off by Alec. “May we help you?” He asked politely, standing in a protective way next to me. “It is fine Alec,” I mumbled to him with a smile. The twins came up on my other side. The people quickly said their names before any more words were spoken. “This is Alec, Jetson and Trevor. Jet and Trev if you will.” I introduced my family. Bandit whispered something to Gerard, and he gave her a smile. “I don’t know, Sugar.” He told her quietly. “Can Cali and I go pway?” Bandit asked me. “Oh, pwease Mommy!” Cali asked excitedly. I was aware of the slight alarm the new people showed, but I didn’t care. I gave Gerard a look and he nodded. “Of course, Babygirl. Have fun,” I put her down as Gerard did the same. The two girls started to run off. “Be careful!” I called after them worriedly. Alec nudged me softly. “They’ll be fine!” “I suppose…” I trailed off. "I know we just met...but she's your daughter?" Krista asked unsurely. I gave her a slight smile. "No miss, she's my younger sister. Might as well be mine though..." I added under my breath. "Oh..." She trailed awkwardly. "Not to be rude...but, how may we help you?” Alec questioned, still staying polite. “Oh! We’re your neighbors. Came over to introduce you and ask a favor.” Ray informed us. “In that case: Thank you very much, it’s always nice to meet those we live near. I suppose Cali and Bandit will become friends, or knowing my sister, ‘besties forever!’” He imitated a higher voice. I busted into giggles, and he just smirked at me. “But ask away with the favor, I promise we’ll do what we can regardless.” “If Cali’s like that, they defiantly are. The favor really is just a courtesy thing. We ask you don’t take pictures and post them on the internet. Or blog about our lives. We just ask for privacy regarding the world.” Ray explained. My laughter had already dissolved, and I nodded to him. “Understood.” I reassured. “You don’t have to worry about it.” Alec backed me up. “We got this!” Trevor threw his hands up in mock pep. I gave him a grin. “Hakuna matata, our new neighbors!” Jet brushed off. “Thank you.” Alicia said earnestly. We stood there for a few moments. “Where are your parents?” Frank blurted out. Gerard hit him in the arm and gave him a pointed look. I left it to Alec to answer this question. “Business.” Alec lied casually. “Dad’s in Asia and Mom’s in Costa Rica.” So that’s where mom was… “Oh…so you guys moved yourself out here?” Mikey made conversation. Just then, I heard a high pitched scream. Fuck politeness. I gave an alarmed look at the black rod iron gate which led to the backyard. “Go.” Alec all but ordered. I sped off at a direct diagonal for the gate. I shoved the door open more and fought through the overgrown bushes, to the clearing in the back. Bandit was standing there, covered in mud. She had a scraped knee with blood trickling down her leg. Cali had some mud, but it looked as though she only helped her up. I continued my running until I slid on my knees to Bandit. “Hey there, Sweetheart.” I said smoothly, but the dark haired girl still cried. “Listen, why don’t we get that cleaned up, get a new dress on you, and have some pancakes?” I asked her softly. She sniffled, but gave a little nod. I smiled at her sweetly, and picked her up into my arms. “Cali,” I grabbed her little hand in my strong one, leading her out. As we walked to the group of people, Lyn-Z and Gerard came straight over. “She fell.” I told them, placing Bandit in her mother’s arms. “Come along, now,” I told them, scooping my sister into my arms. I walked to Alec, swiped the keys from his pocket, gave him a cheeky smile, and turned to the twins. “Jet, can you grab me one of Cali’s suitcases? Trev, make pandcakes?” I received curt nods. “You got it, Madre!” Trevor double pointed. “I’ll grab the dress one.” Jet smiled. “Thanks, guys. Everyone else, please do join us.” I warmly suggested. They either shrugged or nodded, but they followed me to the door. I unlocked it for the second time that day, and we all filed in. “Living room to the right, kitchen to the left, bathroom is somewhere, Lyn-Z and I will be upstairs with the girls. Alicia, Krista and Jamia, you are welcome to join us. The remote is on the table, movies to the right of the TV. Holler if you need anything.”I explained quickly, receiving impressed nods in turn. The four women, two kids, and I walked up the creaky stairs. We located the bathroom, and we piled into the spacious room. “Alec came out here about a week ago with the twins, the two of them set things up so it’s all working.” I audiated, as I turned the faucet on. Warm water filled the large basin, and I picked up a bottle of ultra-sensitive bubble bath with a questioning look to Lyn-Z. “Ultra-Sensitive? Damn…yeah, go ahead.” Once she agreed, I poured the clear liquid into the running water. Bubbles filled the tub almost completely. Alicia undressed Bandit, and I turned to Cali. I lifted her up and put her in the water once I had finished. “That okay?” I referred to the water. The little girl giggled, and threw bubbles at me. I gave her a grin, and plopped a handful on her head. Alicia slid Bandit in across from Cali, and Lyn-Z started to help her daughter clean off. I heard a knock on the door and walked to it. Slipping into the hallway, I smiled at Jet. “Thanks, hun.” I told him, taking the pink case in my hand. “They good?” He dismissed my appreciation with a worried glance. “Yeah. Bandit’s got a scrapped knee but they’re mostly just covered in mud.” I sighed. “Hey, breathe young one. You’re already getting grays, and I’d rather you not have a heart attack.” “Why not? It’d make a good story.” I winked to his rolling eyes. Jet opened the door and I walked through, letting him close it. “So,” I started, interrupting the four women’s hushed conversation. I was looking at the little girls though. “I have a bunch of dresses. Cali, yellow?” I asked my joyful little sister. “Yay!” She cheered happily. “And Bandit,” I looked to her with a smile. The tyke gave me a toothy grin, “What’s your favorite colour?” “Wed!” She answered cutely. “Oooo red? Cali’s got one of those.” I smiled. I went down to my knees, and opened the case. Just like Jet said; dresses were packed neatly. I picked up both dresses, and snapped the lid shut. I held each of the frilly objects up and was presented with squeals of delight. The kids went back to playing, and I stood looking out the window. The view showed the back yard, and I innocently looked at the bundles of flowers. “Um…” Christa started. “Lenny.” I reminded kindly. “Lenny. We would like to ask you a few questions, if that’s alright?” She sounded like a teacher. I turned my gaze to the women and allowed the corners of my mouth to turn up. “I only promise the flowers will grow faster than my answers will soothe.”
