Surrender the Night

He's Not Around, He's Always Looking At Men

As the boys walked out to the garden shed the sudden cold shook both their spines. Gerard was wondering if this boy smoked, or if he had just come out here for the hell of it. He also thought about how creepy it was that he had drawn pictures of this boy he had barely met in his room. Gerards thoughts ran like a train. Starting with these thoughts and cascading into the different dreams, how Frank looked, wondering what Frank was thinking at the moment, if he has had these dreams also, ect. Frank on the other hand was trying to think of anything but the boy in front of him, leading the way. Little did Gerard know that Frank had these dreams to, he was the one knowing Gerard would die if he didn’t let him go. Frank looked around, at the endless abyss of white on the football and soccer fields. The sky was a light gray, matching the ground, blinding both the boys a bit.

“Here we are.” Gerard said, opening the heavy door, waiting for Frank to go through, his voice still muffled a bit from the cigarette in his mouth. Frank went through, nervousness growing a bit in the pit of his stomach. Once Frank thought he was far enough through he stopped and turned around, his back a couple of feet away from the tools leaned against the back wall of the small rectangular shed. It was warm in this shed, warmer than outside, which Frank was thankful for. Gerard peered out the shed to make sure no one was following or watching, closing the door when he was sure. When he turned Frank was awkwardly standing there, not sure what to do with himself. Gerard quickly smiled at him, then finding his usual spot in the shed. He sat down, leaning against the wood tool-table that was dusty and unused. Frank gathered his thoughts and calmed his jumpy nerves, and then proceeded to sit across from Gerard, leaning against the exposed wall. Frank sat criss-cross, while Gerard had his legs in front of him, his knees raised a bit, but not a lot, allowing Frank to see his face.

While Frank found his spot Gerard was digging through his pockets, trying to find his lighter. Frank watched as Gerard cupped his hand around both the white lighter and cigarette. He watched, awestruck, as Gerard took that first long drag. He had noticed that Gerard didn’t have a prominent jaw line like himself but he had strong cheekbones, and as Gerard took that first long drag his cheekbones became exposed. Frank didn’t want to admit, but he thought Gerard was attractive. Frank didn’t like thinking about Gerard and the inevitable crush he had on this newly found boy. Frank wanted to think he was straight, especially with his homophobic family. If his father learned he was gay he’d be in a world of hurt. Although, this feeling Frank had for Gerard was nothing to question. It was strong and lustful, Frank would never admit this.

“So, what brings you here?” Gerard asked Frank, curious. The cigarette smoke went through Gerard’s body, calming his overactive nerves with the smoky feeling.

“My father got some sort of job offer, so I had to come along with him.” Frank answered, awkwardly. Gerard liked his voice, the low raspiness of it, however you can sense the gentleness in it also.

After a few minutes of awkwardness Gerard noticed Frank had never asked, “You want a cigarette?” He asked, realization he hadn’t made this offer before.

“Uh, s-sure.” Frank said, taken out of his space of thought. At that moment Frank smiled, happy Gerard asked and he didn’t have to. Gerard took out a single cigarette and gave it to Frank, his lighter in the hand with it. Frank took them happily and with no hesitation lit it and took a long drag, having the same calming effect it had on Gerard.
