The Workings of Liars and Fakes
Johnny Ringo
Sage was never the type of girl to stand in the shadows. No, she was a leader. She was always the type of girl to be the center of attention. It's always been that way. Even when she was a little girl, the spotlight was always on her. Now her twin brother, Alec, was the complete opposite. He lurked around in the shadows, dealing drugs, gambling, and other various bad habits. But that's what made them the best team; they balanced each other out.
She woke up with a pounding headache. She and Alec went to a wild party the night before, which wasn't the brightest idea, considering today was their first day of senior year. She looked over to her alarm clock... Shit! It was already 6:45 and they weren't ready. School started at 7:00.
"WAKE UP ALEC" She yelled into her brother's room. Then she proceeded to get ready at lightning speed. Sage's wardrobe consisted of mostly black, red, and leather. She pulled on some tight black pants, a white v neck, and her favorite leather jacket. After pulling on her shoes and book bag, she ran down the stairs to make her morning coffee.
"ALEC!! If you don't get your lazy ass down here right this minute, I will gouge your eyes out with a spoon!" She threatened to her brother, who just walked down the stairs, still in his pajamas.
"Jesus Christ, woman, I just need some coffee first." He whined.
"Here," She said while handing him her mug, "Now go get ready or we'll miss our morning smoke with the guys."
Missing the morning smoke wasn't an option. It had been a tradition since the end of freshman year. Every morning Sage, Alec, and the rest of the crew would smoke cigarettes outside the back of the school. The crew consisted of Evan, Brad, Eli, Mandy, and Krista. Evan and Brad were cousins, but looked nothing alike. Brad was tall and buff, his brown hair came over his bright blue eyes. Evan barely reached 5'5" and was scrawny, his curly shaggy hair didn't even meet his dark brown eyes. Eli was a mystery to Sage. He was always quiet and introverted. The crew had gotten him to come out of his shell when they were around, but he reverted to his old ways whenever anybody else showed up. Sage couldn't help but have a little crush on him. He was tall and pale. He had lengthy black hair that framed his face just right with sparkling green eyes to match.
Now, Mandy and Krista were a whole other story. Krista was tough, tougher than most guys Sage knew. Krista's mom abandoned her when she was 11, leaving her with the drunken father and two younger brothers. Krista had short blonde spiky hair, with hazel eyes. Mandy was the complete opposite. Mandy was sensitive to everything. She was insecure, and mostly innocent, except for when she was around the crew. Her long, dark blue hair was always perfectly curled and hung over her grey eyes.
"Are we going or not" Alec snapped Sage out of her daydream. In a short three minutes, he somehow managed to drink all of his coffee and get ready.
"Yeah, let's go." She replied. They both hopped in the car and managed to make it to school with 5 minutes to spare. Walking to the back of the school, they were greeted by the crew.
"First day of senior year, bitches!' Brad screamed at the top of his lungs.
"Shut up" Evan groaned.
"How's Lila?" Sage asked Krista. Lila was Krista's girlfriend going on for two years.
"She's good. Still trying to get past her anxiety, but good." Krista replied, handing Sage the pack of cigarettes.
Sage took out two cigs and passed one to Alec. Lighting it up, she took a deep drag and sighed. "This is our last year, you guys... Let's make it count.."
"How so?" Alec questioned.
"By being the most crazy sons of bitches in this town" Mandy squealed.
"Please, you wouldn't know crazy if Charles Manson was eating fruit loops on your front porch" Sage scoffed.
"Let's get inside. Wouldn't want to be late on our first day of senior year, would we?" Eli said with a smirk. And with that, they all shuffled into the school.
The first two periods went by quickly for Sage. The same old boring introductions, with the same old boring teachers. Now she was going to Anatomy. Rumors floated around the school that there was a new teacher, but she could care less. Walking into the classroom, she immediately spotted Evan and took the seat next to him.
"New kid, over by the door" he whispered to her. She looked over by the door and saw him. The new kid was tall. He has mousy brown hair that barely covered his glasses. She couldn't see the exact color of his eyes from this distance, but she could tell they were a hazel color. The new kid walked over to the teacher's desk and sat down. What the hell is he doing?
"Umm.. excuse me, class. I'm Mr. Way. I'll be your anatomy teacher this year." he spoke. Sage was a little shocked to say the least. I mean, he barely looked older than 19 maybe. "Today we'll be doing an introductory worksheet for this class" he mumbled and the whole class groaned.
"Fuck this, I'm outta here." Sage whispered to Evan.
"You're really gonna skip on the first day of school?" He chuckled.
"Hell yeah." She whispered. "Mr. Way! May I use the restroom?" She yelled over the voices of the angsty teenagers who were already complaining abut the class.
"Ermm.. yeah.. sure" He mumbled in response.
She smirked and walked out of the classroom to the courtyard.Taking out her iPod, she put on some Joy Division and closed her eyes.
By the time, she opened her eyes, Iron Maiden was playing and by the look of the clock, it had only been 15 minutes. Damn, this period was passing by slowly.
"Aren't you supposed to be in class" A voice said from behind her. She snapped her head around only to see Mr. Way.
"Aren't you supposed to be teaching a class" she sassed.
"Yah, but.. ummm.. you should get a detention for this." He replied.
"Oh cmon, Mr. Way.. You wouldn't give me a detention.. Are you really that kind of teacher?" she asked mockingly.
"Well.. just get back to class next time, yeah?" he mumbled and walked away.
She smirked. This was going to be a great year.
