Behind Amber Eyes

Turn Away

Michael

After Michael witnessed Korse’s transformation, he left the room to go find Raymond.

“Did you carry on?” Asked Raymond as Michael approached him.

“Yes,” said Michael, “His last orders were for us to go down to the basement.”

“Did he specify?”

“No, and I didn’t question, but it must be important if they were his last words to us.”

Raymond nodded. The two of them made their way to the nearest elevator. Michael pressed the button to go down to the basement.

There wasn’t much talk between the two as the elevator slowly descended, so Michael was left to his own thoughts.

When he saw Korse leaving his body, he couldn’t help but feel some sort of content. It wasn’t that he was glad or anything, but it just didn’t feel like him. He decided to leave the thought behind as the elevator doors finally opened.

Raymond and Michael both stepped out. They heard voices from the other end of the room. They both ran to the sound.

Instinct kicked in and they shot at the two men standing by the girl. Michael hit one in the leg, and he collapsed to the floor. Raymond instantly went to gag the red-haired man. Michael was left to deal with the other one. He ran to him and grabbed his hands. As quickly as he could, he handcuffed the man and threw him to the ground. Michael saw his face for the first time. It was Lukas McCoy, the man who he was supposed to kill.

Michael brought his gun out from his holster, but stopped himself when he saw Lukas’ face. He didn’t know why, but there was this nagging feeling that he shouldn’t kill him—yet.

“I’ll deal with you later,” he spat. He picked the trembling Lukas back up from the ground and looked at Raymond. He had knocked both of the other men out and put them next to each other.

“Call some dracs,” said Michael. “Tell them to bring them to room 213.” Raymond nodded and brought out his radio.

“Michael,” whispered Lukas. Michael looked down at him. He felt no emotion, just that he needed to kill this man. He couldn’t take the look Lukas was giving him, so with one swift kick, he sent Lukas into the realm of the unconscious.

Party

When Party woke up, all of his body was tied up. The room he was in had monitors all around him. He looked to the sides of him and saw his friends, also tied up.

“Look who decided to wake up?” Party whipped his head around and saw Jet.

‘Why don’t you just kill us already,” frowned Party. “You keep saying that you will but then you don’t. Are you afraid of us?”

Jet grabbed Party’s shirt collar. “Don’t you dare call us cowardly,” he spat. “If you’re still alive, assume there is a reason and pray that today won’t be your last.” Jet let go of Party and walked to the front of the room. He pulled something out of his pocket and spoke into it. 6 dracs walked into the room then, taking out their Taser guns to wake the other ones up.

Party saw Kobra walk up to the front of the room with Jet. The two looked very different from when Party last saw them. Kobra’s hair was all shaved off, and Jet no longer sported his famous Afro. It made Party sad to see how much Korse had warped and twisted the minds of the people he loved.

With a flicker, the monitors switched on. On the screen was Shock. He could see her rapidly change from herself into Korse and then back again. She was fighting, and losing by the looks of it.

“It’s so sad, seeing someone so beautiful and delicate die,” said Jet mockingly. “Let’s let her say her last words to her friends.”

With the snap of his fingers, sound came on, and Party could hear what was happening to Shock.

“Can she hear us?” Ghoul whispered.

“Not quite. We just need one final touch.”

Two dracs came in then, dragging a mutilated looking Dr. D. His face was scratched up and burned, and the only hair he had left was in little patches across his torn up head. Party had never seen anyone in this condition before, and his initial reaction was to cringe and turn away.

“Hey there, Killjoys,” he croaked out. Party instantly felt bad for reacting the way he did.

“Hi, D,” he responded with a smile. Dr. D smiled back. The older man was missing some of his teeth. Party almost teared up at the thought of how much pain he had to go through.

“Don’t worry about me,” he said. It was almost as if Dr. D had been reading his mind. Party looked down into his lap, embarrassed. He felt bad for giving Dr. D such a nasty look, especially since he was a life long friend.

Just in time to ruin a good moment, Kobra came up behind Party and whapped him in the back of the head. For a moment, Party saw stars.

“Enough,” hissed Kobra. He turned to press something on the wall. All at once, sound erupted from around them. Shock’s previously silenced struggles could be heard all around them. Party looked around him. Lukas and Ghoul were whispering to each other, concern in their eyes. Dr. D looked sad beyond repair. Party had no idea what it felt like to see a child figure to distraught and insane. He imagined it had to be terrible.

“Shock?” Party called out, hoping she heard him. The others soon followed.

“Ellie?”

“Harley?”

“Shock?”

Shock looked around frantically. “Who’s there?” She called out, her voice laced with fear and insanity.

“It’s us,” answered Party. “Ghoul, Party and Lukas.”

“Don’t forget about me.” Party looked back to see Dr. D, grinning as big as he could.

“D-D-Dr. D?” stuttered Shock.

“It’s me, my little girl. I’m alright.” Tears were pooling in Dr. D’s eyes, threatening to spill with every passing second.

“I thought you were dead!” She cried. It was too much for Dr. D to handle. The tears started to pour slowly down his face.

“Korse is dying,” Party said. He wasn’t sure if that was true, but it looked like Shock needed some hope.

“You have to kill him,” she said, her eyes going out of focus for a second.

“Won’t you die too?” Party looked over to see Ghoul, concern in his eyes. Jealousy burst inside of Party. Since when did Ghoul care this much about Shock?

“I won’t die, but that doesn’t matter. You need to kill him.”

Ghoul frowned and looked down at his hands. The corner of his mouth twitched. Was he going to cry? Party could barely take it when Dr. D cried, but seeing one of his best friends cry would send him over the edge.

“Don’t worry,” said Lukas, “We’ll kill him.”

“Since when did you want to kill your ‘boss’?” She scoffed. Lukas flinched at the hardness of her tone.

Before Lukas had the chance to reply, Shock whipped her head around violently.

“I told you to leave me alone!” She shrieked.

“What’s going on?” Asked Ghoul.

“Stop playing dumb, Ghoul. I know you’re not real!”

Tears pooled in Ghoul’s eyes. “What are you talking about?”

Party was completely convinced that Shock was going insane. Korse had made her this way, and Party felt bad for the poor girl.

“Stop playing tricks on my mind, Korse. They’re not real!” Shock started coughing up blood from all of the screaming and crying she had done.

Then she stopped. Just for a split second to regain composure.

“Prove it. Prove that you guys are real.”

Everyone looked at each other then. There was a long pause before Dr. D finally spoke up.

“I remember when you were just a tot, you were so determined to make me proud.” Dr. D stopped for a moment to wipe his tears. “Everyday, you’d come back and show me something new, remember? Remember when you drew me that picture of us?” Dr. D was crying too much to even speak. Party looked down at Shock to see that tears were also falling down her face.

“I love you,” she whispered just loud enough for us to hear.

Dr. D shook his head. “I can’t do this anymore, somebody else go.”

“I don’t remember much,” started Lukas. “I remember us trying to run away. Then they drugged me, and I don’t remember much after that.

“I guess I remember our mom – err – not really our mom but close enough. She looked just like you, remember?”

Shock nodded her head slowly, a small smile spreading across her face. She zoned off again, probably thinking about their life before they realized how terrible reality was.

Shock started laughing, then coughing. Party looked around at everyone. Concern clouded their eyes. Shock started wheezing, and then gasping for breath.

“Can’t…breath,” she wheezed. Blood started pouring from her nose.

“Stop it!” Yelled Party.

“Whatever you say.” Shock looked up at him, through the monitors. Her eyes were the same sinister color of Korse’s. She smirked before collapsing all together.

Jet stood up to turn off the monitors. Everyone was exhausted from the encounter with Shock.

Party looked at Jet. “I’m glad you’re proud of yourself,” spat Party.

“I didn’t do anything—“ Jet suddenly collapsed to the ground. The dracs all around them ran to his side.

“He’s dead,” one said.

At that moment, Kobra burst through the door. “I need Lukas McCoy.” He walked over and grabbed Lukas, and dragged him out of the room, away from everyone else, and the now dead Jet.
