What Hides In The Dark

Frank slammed his car door shut, shoving his hands deep into the pockets of his leather jacket as he made his way towards the storage facility. Rain thundered down from the darkened skies as black, shapeless clouds covered the moon on this strangely quiet night.

He sharply turned left, walking towards storage block D on the far side of the allotment. He knew he shouldn't have come tonight. Why couldn’t this have waited until the morning? He knew this was a mistake when he stormed out of his house, leaving Mia crying and terrified for their relationship. Perhaps he had been a little too hard on her this time. He loved her, he had done for years. But recently, it was like everything about her seemed to aggravate him, slowly winding him down until he snapped. Frank sighed, running a hand through his sodden hair; he didn’t want to break up with her.

But sometimes in life, you had to make hard choices.

He stopped suddenly, staring up at a large metal door that stood before him. Maybe this was a mistake, maybe he shouldn't have come tonight; god knows what Gerard kept locked up in there. Frank swallowed hard, quickly turning to leave when the sound of footsteps echoed behind him; growing louder with each step. He froze, fear rising in the pit of his stomach.

“You Mr Iero” an elderly voice from behind him asked. Frank sighed with relief, laughing half heartedly as he turned around to face Mr Myers. “Jesus old timer don’t creep up on me like that” he scowled, thunder clashing overhead as he spoke. Mr Myers nodded, his face surprisingly older than Frank had imagined. His blue sunken eyes stared at him with a sense of wisdom; as though he had seen a great deal of things in life- some of which he may have wished he hadn’t. His skin was a leathery brown with wrinkles lined his face and deepened as he spoke. “Here’s the keys, don’t forget to lock up after your done” He warned, tossing Frank the keys before walking off into the shadows; disappearing from view.

Frank’s hands shook as he placed the small silver key inside the padlock; the cold air around him felt like a cage as he struggled to unlock the padlock. “Stupid shit” he cursed, violently kicking the door. He quickly calmed himself down, slowly placing the key in the lock and clicking it open; he always had a short temper- it was his biggest downfall in life.

The lock fell open in his hands. Frank slipped it off the door, pulling the door open and crept inside. He flicked the switched on the wall closest to the door; a dim light flickered on to reveal a room filled with belongings. He began to wander around the unit, passing open boxes of junk marked Mine before noticing a large wardrobe in the corner of the room. Frank’s footsteps echoed through the unit as he walked closer to it, his heart racing in his chest. He couldn’t put his finger on what was wrong with it. Out of all the junk that littered the space, it just seemed out of place. It looked too new.

Perhaps he was just being stupid.

A sickening smell suddenly wafted in Frank’s face, making him gag. He doubled over, tears stinging in his eyes as he fell into a coughing fit- what the hell was that? Frank reached out, grabbing the wardrobe door handles and pulling them open. He stumbled backwards, landing on his backside as he stared in horror at the sight before him A man, no more than 25, was hanging dead from the inside of the wardrobe. “Oh my god” he spluttered, scrambling to his feet and running out of the storage unit. He couldn’t believe it, he just couldn’t. He had met that man so many times before, he couldn’t believe he would do that to himself.

Unless...
