What Hides In The Dark
Chapter One
Behavioural Science, the Metropolitan Police section that deals with brutal murder cases, is on the bottom floor of the Academy building in South London; half hidden by the vast amount of forest that surrounded the buildings. Frank Iero reached it flushed after a fast walk from the firing range. He had grass in his hair and grass stains on his College of Policing tracksuit from diving to the ground under fire in an arrest problem on the range
No one was in the outer office, so he quickly checked his reflection in the glass doors. He knew he would look alright without sorting himself out. His hands stunk of gun smoke, but there was no time to wash them- Chief Toro summons had said now.
He found Ray Toro alone in the cluttered suite of offices. He was standing at someone else’s desk, talking on the phone and he had a chance to look him over for the first time in a year. What he saw disturbed him.
Normally, Toro looked like a fit engineer who might have paid his way through university playing football. Now he was thin with his hair grown out into a messy afro, his shirt collar was too big and he had dark circles under his reddened eyes. Everyone who had read the papers knew Behavioural Science Section was catching hell. Frank hoped Crawford wasn’t on the drink again, although it seemed rather unlikely. Toro ended his phone conversation with a sharp “No.” He took Frank’s file from under his arm and opened it. “Iero, Frank, good morning” He said. “Hello” His smile was only polite. “Nothing’s wrong, I hope the call didn’t spook you” Toro said, eyeing Frank with a sense of caution. “No” Please, do I look stupid? Frank thought.
“Your instructors telling me you’re doing well, top of the class I hear”
“I hope so... they haven’t posted our results yet”
Toro nodded, a thin smile spreading across his face. “A job came up and I thought about you. He said. “It’s not really a job; it’s more of an interesting errand”. That surprised Frank, he had written Toro off as a two faced son of a bitch; clearly something was wrong with him.
“Do you spook easily, Frank?” Toro asked coldly, folding his hands together as he sat down behind a desk; staring up intently at him. Frank rubbed the back of his head, feeling unsure with the whole situation. “Not yet” He replied, shaking his head. Toro nodded, leaning back in his chair as he gestured Frank to take a seat; he silently complied. “See, we’ve tried to interview and examine all the thirty-two known serial murderers we have in custody, to build up a database for psychological profiling in unsolved cases. However, the one we want most, we haven’t been able to get and I want you to after him tomorrow in the asylum”. Frank felt a glad knocking inside his chest and some apprehension too. “Who?” he asked curiously. Toro sighed, running a hand through his hair as he locked eyes with the man before him.
“Gerard Way” Toro replied quietly.
A brief silence hung in the air, this normally happened after his name was mentioned in any civilised gathering. Toro leaned forward, a stern look forming on his face. “Now. I want your full attention Frank. Be very careful with Gerard Way. Dr Balleto, the head of the mental hospital, will go over the physical procedure you use to deal with him. Do not deviate from it and do not reveal anything about yourself to him. You don’t want him getting inside your head” He warned; his voice quiet and frightening.
Frank nodded in agreement; struggling to control the smile that was slowly forming on his lips. He couldn’t waste this opportunity- this was his chance to prove himself as a police officer. “You think he knows something about Jeff The Killer?”
Toro smiled at him, but his eyes were dead.
