In Which Mikey Accidentally Ends Up Arranging A Date
I huffed and paced back and forth, phone to my ear, "Kristin PLEASE! I mean I understand you have a baby shower but you'll leave me alone with...with HIM."
I could practically hear her rolling her eyes, "Mikey I don't understand why you don't just fire him. I mean if you're so uncomfortable...."
I sighed, "I can't fire him. I don't have the heart and you know it. Plus he's good at this job. One of my best so far. Can you at least try to work something out?"
Kristin sounded annoyed at this point, "it's not my fault your feeling extra gay for one of your workers. But I'll see if I can pull some strings. You'll know if I'm there tomorrow okay?"
"Whatever." I hung up and put my phone in my pocket. I'm done for. I needed some coffee, but to get to the break room, I had to pass his desk.
Relax Mikes, walk quickly past his desk and pretend you don't notice him, maybe he won't talk to you then.
I let out a shaky breath and set off.
10 feet away, 9 feet away, 8 feet away...
Almost there
5 feet away, 4 feet away....
His desk was only a foot away, I picked up my pace,
Please don't notice me, PLEASE DONT NOTI-
"Hey Mikey!"
Shit.
John came out from behind his desk and smiled at me. God he has a really nice smile.
"Were you just about to get coffee?"
I scanned my brain for words that just weren't appearing. Eventually I was able to give a slightly intelligent response, "oh um yeah?" Sadly it came out as most of a question. H
He either ignored my nervousness or he just didn't notice it because he kept on smiling, "Cool, I was just about to head down there myself. I finished today's paperwork and set calls to be transferred to Brendon. Now that guy is a fine piece of a-" he paused and looked at me, then cleared his throat, "I mean he's a great coworker."
I laughed, ignoring that little pang of jealousy in the back of my head, "Yeah, too bad he's straight as a ruler. Although, that's what we all say before we come out." I felt a surge of confidence and winked at him. His happy expression turned into shock.
Did I do something wrong?
All of the confidence I thought I had was drained from me until I saw John's lips curve into a smirk, "didn't know you swung in that ballpark," he said.
I shrugged, "so did my brother," I felt myself smile, "I guess it's hereditary."
I took a mental picture as he laughed. His mouth opened only slightly and he got little crinkles on the corner of his eyes. It was cute. I snapped out of my space out and faked a cough, "Yes well um, let's go get the coffee I guess..."
He gave me his award-winning smile and lead the way. The break room wasn't too far off, so it wasn't an awkward walk. We got our coffees and sat down and just talked. It was actually pretty nice. We spoke of pointless things like bands we like, how much sugar we like in our coffee, instruments we play (he plays the bass, note to self, make him play it for me one day,) and small things like that.
He was way more confident than I was, that's for sure. But he made up for what I lacked so it wasn't too bad. We got up and threw away our copy cups. John and I began making our way to my office.
Just tell him now to get it over with.
I sighed, "Hey John?"
"Hmmm?" He responded .
"There's a possibility that Kristin won't be able to join us in the dinner. So looks like it'll be just me and you. If that's a problem..."
"Oh it's certainly not a problem. I mean it's great. We can finally be alone together." His sweet expression turned into a devious one.
"W-what?" I stuttered, slowly backing up to the empty desk behind me.
"Oh c'mon Mikey," he was inching closer to me, and I had nowhere to go with the desk blocking my path, "we both know this is your way of asking me out on a date." The small of my back was pressed against the desk, John extending his arms, leaving me in a trap. His face came closer to mine until our foreheads were touching. I couldn't breathe steadily, what the fuck is going on?
"You realize how scandalous this is don't you sir? This could get you in a lot of trouble, but lucky for you," he leaned away from my face and towards my ear, his next words barley above a whisper, "I like scandalous." He pulled himself away from me and walked back to his desk, swaying his hips. I couldn't help but stare. He sat down at his desk as if nothing had happened. Then again, what DID happen?
