Just Look at All That Pain
Sowing Season
Cold burned into the front of Gerard’s body as he faded back into consciousness. He quickly realized he was laying face down on a concrete floor as he attempted to move. Pain shot through his body and it felt like someone dug a knife into his forehead. He sighed, trying to ignore the pain as he opened his eyes.
He gathered he must have been in a basement of some kind. Light filtered through small, high windows. Broken bottles and rubble caste shadows on the dusty floor of the huge room. Gerard pushed himself into a sitting position, trying not to move his head too much. Across the room, light streamed through a decent sized hole in the concrete wall and Gerard guessed that was how he had gotten here in the first place, as there were no other visable exits. He stumbled to his feet and staggered a few steps forward, before needing to brace himself on a nearby pillar. He slowly made his way to the opposite end of the room. Gerard suddenly realized how quiet it was, considering he guessed he was still in the middle of New York. He ducked through the hole and found himself in a, what he thought, was a courtyard. It was small and the only entrance into it was the hole he had just come out of. The gray concrete walls were covered in graffiti and thick patches of weeds covered most of the ground.
‘Where the hell am I,’ Gerard thought to himself, trying to think of a way out or at least a way of figuring out where he was.
“What are we going to with him now,” a voice rang out from another part of the building.
Gerard jumped, unsure where the sound came from. He took a step forward and pressed himself up against the courtyard wall, out of sight. He heard footsteps and muttering coming from the direction he had just came from.
“Mike! You sure you put him here,” the voice called out. It was clearly a man’s voice.
“Yea! Down by that last pillar,” another man replied.
‘Fuck. They’re looking for me,” he thought to himself. He took another step back, away from the hole. He pushed the weeds back, to make more room for himself, when to his surprise; he revealed another hole about the size of pizza box leading to God only knows where. Gerard knew he would only be safe there for so long and right now his best bet was squeezing his way through that hole.
After making the tight squeeze, he found himself in, what he could make out, was a similar room to the one he had left. The only difference being that the windows had been boarded up and he was basically stood in complete darkness. He stumbled forward, making sure he didn’t make too much noise. He stopped abruptly; almost positive he heard someone, or something, breathe. After a brief pause, he continued. By now his eyes had adjusted, which was making it easier to move around in the low light. After feeling around along the walls, he eventually came across a heavy metal door. He gave it a shove and much to his relief, light flooded in. The next room had old machines in it, giving Gerard the impression it used to be a factory of some kind. He came across another stroke of luck. Above the doors were fire exit signs. He quickly made his way to the thick door, which led him down a hallway. There were cracks in the ceiling, which let light in, much to Gerard’s discomfort. As he walked down the hall, he realized the doors joined to it had been replaced by think metal bars, turning them into cages. Luckily for Gerard, the first five had been empty but the last was boarded up. Curiosity got the best of him. Peaking through the boards, Gerard was shocked at what he saw. Firstly it was the smell that hit him but it was what he saw that got to him. Crumpled up in the far corner of the tiny room, was the decaying body of a dog. He quickly continued down the hallway.
Once through the door at the opposite end, he came into the main lobby. Gerard quickly stepped up to the door but he was met with an unsatisfying thud of a chain and padlock. He had to find another way out.
“Make sure you feed the other one!” Someone shouted from another part of the building. Gerard quickly ran behind the old, beat up desk that had been abandoned in the corner. Papers and folders still sat in the otherwise empty drawers.
“Damn idiot, how the hell could he lose him,” a short, bald man muttered as he walked through the lobby and past Gerard’s hiding place. “Make sure you feed the other one,” he mocked as he turned down another hallway.
Gerard made a risky decision. He was going to follow him and see just who the bald guy was going to feed. Gerard had a sick feeling that he wouldn’t like the answer
