The Light Behind Your Eyes

Chapter 17: Stay. Strong.

All I could do was stare at her. She was covered in blood from head to toe, her face covered in bruises. The blood smeared all over, I couldn't actually find any cuts that she could be bleeding from. Most of it was dried, so I'd say where she's been bleeding has stopped for now. The inside of the closet had her blood smeared all through it too, God only knows how long she's been in here. This is a living hell. "R- Rose? What the hell happened to you?" I stuttered. "I'll explain in a minute. Keep your voice down, you don't want them to hear you. Right now, I need you to help me up, I'll get you out of those ropes." She said reaching up to me. I did my best to stick out my arm for her to grab onto, and she pulled herself up, using me to steady herself once she was on her feet. Her skin was pale underneath all the blood. Too pale. She let go of me, starting to hobble over to the nightstand.

I was afraid she was going to fall over as unsteady as she was, but she made it. Rose opened the drawer and pulled out a knife. Why didn't I think to look in there?! But then...why is there a knife just causally sitting in that drawer. I could see that it had blood on it, and it could only be Rose's. Rose came over to me, standing behind me. I could feel her starting to cut me out of the ropes. "Listen, I'm sorry for everything in high school, honest. I'm not your enemy anymore. I won't hurt you. Craig tried to get me in on his little plan, but I refused, and that's how I ended up in this closet, and that's also how Eliza got involved. He told her the plan, and she jumped at the first chance to get Gerard to be hers."

She said. So he did try to make Rose a part of this, but she said no. Well at least there's one person here other than me who's not a complete lunatic. "I also tried to run and warn you or Gerard about what he was planning, but Craig caught me and also beat for that too." "How long have you been in there?" I whispered out. "A few days. Just bleeding out in there, I lost a lot of blood. It's a wonder I'm not dead." She replied sullenly. I could tell she wished she was. "I had no idea he was like this when we go married, obsessed over you. I'm so stupid." "You're not stupid! He's just deceiving. Just like Eliza. Makes sense they're cousins." I said and she let out a small laugh. "Never thought I'd hear those words come out of somebody else's mouth. Everybody see and believes the lies. I know the truth. And thank God you do too."

The ropes loosened and fell to the ground, and it felt so good to have my hands free and be able to move my arms around. I flexed my sore wrists, stretching out my arms. I was suddenly very thankful for Rose, even if she was covered in blood. "What happened when Eliza or Craig comes up here and sees you?" I ask. "I'll listen for their footsteps and run back in the closet, so we better keep the door open just in case." She said, and I wanted to point out that she could barely walk, but I didn't. Probably if she knew one of them were coming, she could find the strength to run after what's happened to her. "I'm going to get you out of here, or at least I'll try. You can't escape from the window, it's too high, and there's nothing to climb on the outside of the house. That means we have to wait for them to leave. At some point, they'll have to go out to get some things, like more rope. They used the last of it to tie up you hands. When they realize it's been cut, they'll want to go get more to retie you. But don't worry I won't let them tie you. While they're gone I'll get you out of here."

Rose said in a hushed tone and she kept looking over and shoulder at the door as if Eliza and Craig were going to bust through right this moment. "You're going to get out of here too, right?" I asked, a little bit shocked she was just telling me all this out of nowhere. She was more focused on getting me out of here than herself. I would have thought that as soon as she was out of that closet, she'd take off. But it's almost like we're a team now that I've helped her, and she's helped me by getting my hands untied. I'm glad in a strange way I'm not doing this all alone. "Yes, yes, we both will." She assured me quickly, looking back at the door, "I think I hear them coming, quick! Get on the bed!" She instructed as she actually ran for the closet.

I flopped down onto the bed just as the door to the closet shut, and the door to the bedroom opened. Eliza walked in, immediately, spotting the cut rope on the floor and she didn't look happy. Her upper lip twitched with anger. "What the hell is this?" She demanded. I kept my mouth shut. "Think you can escape? You're damn lucky we don't have anymore rope at the moment or I'd tie you to the fucking bed!" She threw the rope across the room, where it hit the wall with a light thud before she turned around and slammed the door behind her. I could hear her yell to Craig, "THE FUCKING SLUT GOT OUT OF HER ROPE! WE NEED TO GET MORE TOMORROW!" The closet door opened a crack, and I heard Rose's quiet voice, "Is she gone?" I nodded, and she came out all the way.

Studying me sadly as I just laid there on the bed, she said, "You don't deserve this." I looked at her, "Neither do you. Nobody does." Rose shook her head, and sat down beside me on the bed, leaning against the headboard. I sat up looking at her. "Well, we're going to be here a while. Might as well get to know each other more. You're the one dating Gerard Way with a baby right?" She looked back at me. She was right, we have nothing better to do. "Yup, that's me." "And the little sister of Pete Wentz? Bassist of Fall Out Boy." Another nod, "Yup." She smiled a bit. "Do you ever think he's going to propose?" She asked, a small smile forming. "I hope. I want to be his wife. His forever."

Suddenly, her smile faded as she said, "I can't imagine how you miss him and your daughter right now." I nodded, "I'm worried about them, too. He doesn't do too well with waiting. I'm hoping Bandit and the guys are keeping him sane. That goes for Pete too. He's very protective. Very. So if I suddenly go missing, he suddenly goes insane." "That's a good brother you know." Rose pointed out. "I know, he's the best brother anyone could ever ask for. I would trade him for anything." I said staring down at my hands which were resting in my lap. "What about you? Any siblings?" Rose nodded, "I have one brother, who's two years older than me and a sister, who is three years younger. My sister died in a car accident when she was coming home from prom with her friends. Out of five, only her and one other died." "Jesus, I'm so sorry. My parents died from a drunk driver. What was her name?"

Rose smiled slightly, "Melody, I called her Mel for short, but my brothers and myself were the only ones allowed to call her that. She was everything to us, we were extremely close. That was how I got married to Craig. I'd been dealing with depression for a long time and on the edge of killing myself. So he proposed. We got married, started fighting, and divorced. When he came back again, I found that i missed him so we remarried, now, I got stuck with this. Hence why I call myself stupid." "I just hate people that deceive like that so easily. It's so frustrating because it's so easy to fall for their tricks and then you wind up in trouble and blame yourself later." I frowned. "Exactly." Rose says.

"Sometimes I- " She was cut off as the bedroom door swung open violently, revealing a very angry Craig, who momentarily looked surprised to see Rose beside me. Then his rage grew, "WHY THE FUCK AREN'T YOU DEAD??!?!?" He roared. "YOU WERE IN THERE, FUCKING BLEEDING LIKE NO TOMORROW, NO FOOD, NO WATER! YOU SHOULD BE DEAD!!" "I don't get it either but I sure as hell wish I were!" She yelled back at him. "You helped her out of the ropes didn't you?" Craig spat, coming over and looming over her. She stared at him defiantly, and that's all he needed for an answer, "You good for nothing dumb bitch!" He slapped her hard, and I knew it would hurt more because of the bruises formed all over her face.

Though she tried to stay strong, she couldn't stop herself from crying out. "Haven't you done enough already? Look at me, I'm covered in my own blood for Christ sake!!!" Rose half-shouted, half- whimpered. "Oh no, it's never enough until you're dead, and thrown into the sewage to rot like the trash you are!" Craig said menacingly, starting to hit her again. This was complete torture, to watch her get hurt like this, unable to defend herself. When Craig was through with hitting her for now, leaving her to whimper in the sheets, her face bleeding again from the cut I could now make out on it, he turned his gaze on me. I was sure he was going to beat me up too, as he hand came up and rested underneath my chin before moving up to caress my cheek as he said, "But you...you're something special, aren't you? Yes you deserve to have a little more than that." He chuckles and I'm doing my best not to turn my head and bite his hand.

"You and I could have a lot of fun before things get...gory." By 'fun' I really hope he doesn't mean what I think he means, and the way he said gory makes my stomach twist. He said it like Gerard says coffee. Like it's his favorite food. Before I could stop myself, I pushed him away, kicking him in the gut. He stumbled back across the room, and I felt like there were spiders crawling over my cheek where his hand had been. I could see her was seething with anger now as he regained his posture and looked at me again. Before I knew it, he darted over to the nightstand, got the knife out of the drawer, and had me up off the bed, pinned to the wall with one hand tightening around my throat.

Craig held the knife at my throat, pressing it into my skin, threatening me with it. I could hear ragged, violent breaths he took as his fury poured out of him, and I was unable to draw or let out a breath from the tightness of his hand around my throat. I knew it was going to leave bruises on my neck. "Don't you ever, ever try to kick or hit me again. Understand?" Craig's voice was a low growl. I didn't understand him. "Understand?!!" He pressed the knife harder, I felt the blood trickle down my neck. Any harder, and the blood would gush out. I saw Rose watching us with fearful eyes, he could kill me right now if he really wanted to. I finally nodded in response and he removed the knife from my neck.

"I could just choke you to death right now, but that would be no fun. I've barely to do what I want with. The list is endless, really. Even after you're dead, I'll continue to do things to your lifeless body. It'll be a little less fun because you won't scream in pain anymore." He hissed before throwing me across the room on the bed again, where I landed in the middle, coughing hard. As i tried to catch my breath, I felt a sharp pain on my arm, and when I lifted my head, I saw that Craig had just run the knife down the top of my arm. Blood bubbled at the surface already, spilling over. It wasn't deep, but it wasn't just a scrape either. Tears formed in my eyes as it stung terribly, and I still couldn't breath.

Craig chuckled again, wiping my own blood on me off of the knife, on my cheek. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him turn, heard Rose whimper in fear, and the knife went flying towards the air at her. There was a thud, and Craig said, "Damn, I missed. What a shame. It would have been delightful to see that knife go right through your forehead." He said before leaving and shutting the door behind him. I looked over at Rose, to see a horrified expression on her face. Craig didn't miss by much, the knife was stuck in the wall just inches above her head. She slowly reached up and took it out of the wall, staring at it like it was an object from another planet. "We should hide this. He knows it's always in the drawer. We should put it somewhere else." She said quietly.

And all I could do was nod because I still couldn't breath that well. "Under the bed is a good place, if you push it in, especially towards the nightstand so it can't be seen." Rose reached down and placed the knife under the bed. Finally able to speak now, I choke out, "I fucking hate him so much. If he's going to kill me do it now!" Rose shook her head, moving over to where I was and sitting me up, giving me a hug as she said, "Don't say that. You have to go back to Gerard and Bandit. You can't do that if you're dead." "Who says I'm ever leaving here alive?" I asked miserably. "I do. I swear to you, you will get out of here alive, and you will see Gerard, your brother, and Bandit and all your friends again. You're not staying here forever. Tomorrow when tomorrow comes...I'm busting you out of here while they're gone."

She said in a soft tone of voice. "You better be coming with me." I reply and there's a small silence before she says,

"We'll see."
