Welcome to the Black Parade

It Just Ain't Living

I could hear the faint beeping of the heart rate monitor as I slowly faded back into reality. I kept on passing into and out of unconsciousness, and although the doctors and nurses that passed my bedside didn’t want to say it, I knew I was coming to the end. For the past three months or so I have watched them walk into the plain white-walled room with looks on their faces which made me think they expected me to be dead weeks ago. The thought terrified me. Death. The end. Or whatever you wanted to call it. The only thought that offered me any sort of comfort was the idea of the Black Parade.
My father always told me the story that his father told him. Our family never was one for religion so instead of a God or angels, the Black Parade was our idea of heaven. According to the story, the Saviors would come to greet you after death. There were four of them and they led the great army, which would become your family after death. You would join them and follow the Saviors as the rescued all the other lost souls. For some reason this was much more comforting than the idea of heaven and hell. I don’t believe I would have ended up in Hell personally but the idea of a perfect land just sounded too good to be true.
I weakly pushed my black fringe back as the nurse changed my I.V. bag. She was cute but as she looked at me, I could see the pity in her hazel eyes. At this point, we all knew I had terminal caner and I was going to die. The main question was: When?

The afterlife is one of the most feared of things, but from what I've seen here, you're handling it a great deal better than a lot of published authors. Keep it up, you wondrous Brit!
