Bright Lights That Cast A Shadow

Chapter Thirty Five

The apartment building had twelve floors. I knew that we had to head to the seventh. How Lindsey planned to pull off her little game without the neighbors hearing. Then again I highly doubted that she cared much. Maybe that was her big plan. Kill Frank, leave me to take the blame, get me locked up for the rest of my life. Sounds bitchy enough.
We entered the lobby, probably looking more suspicious than we should. No one was there.
"Shouldn't at least someone be at the front desk?" Mikey asked, his voice taking on a tinge of disgust as he surveyed the place. It was pretty bad. The wallpaper was peeling and the carpet had so many stains on it that I was slightly scared to walk on it. A broken chair sat propped up in the corner next to a wilted plant.
I approached the front desk. "I don't think anyone's here," I told him, snatching the taped on piece of paper off the desk. "The city is tearing this shit hole down next week. Everyone's left." A sudden thud from upstairs sounded and I whipped around towards the stairs. "C'mon get on my back!" I cried out remembering that we had a deadline to meet. Mikey didn't even argue, just ambled up onto my back.
I took the stairs with vampire speed, probably making Mikey sick. I raced up the seven flights of stairs using a quarter of the time it would've taken a human. I set Mikey down when we reached he final flight and he wobbled slightly.
"I'm good, I'm good," He gasped. "We need to..." He let the sentence drop as we both ran for the right room.
I burst in the door, not even bothering to knock or whatever the hell I was suppose to do in this situation. I was met with an empty room. Another thud sounded from the direction of the bedroom and I ran towards it.
The mystery of the thuds was solved a second later when I watched Lindsey throw Frank against the wall before leaning down and kissing him. He was trying to crawl away, and I stared in horror as tears streamed down his cheeks, mixing with some blood.
I growled and leaped at Lindsey. Since she was busy making out with my fucking boyfriend I was actually able to knock her over. I pinned her on the floor, growling and trying to rip her throat out. She wasn't even trying that hard. She just kept on laughing.
"Oh! Now it's so much more fun!" She cackled, pushing my chest with force and throwing me backwards. I flew back, nearly flying into Frank who scrambled away whimpering. I groaned and rubbed my head where it had smashed into the wall. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Mikey pull Frank off of the floor and behind him.
Lindsey popped off the floor and brushed her mini skirt off before turning to me. "Well now that we're all here," She clapped and sashayed over to me and kissed me on the lips before pulling away and sitting on the bed crossing her legs. "What shall we do?"
"My God woman! Do you kiss everything with a fucking pulse!" Frank spat out bitterly from behind Mikey. I shot him a you're-not-helping look. Lindsey sighed and studied her nails.
"I don't know about you, but I'm getting bored." Before I could even think of moving she had jumped off the bed and moved towards Mikey. Within seconds she had reached for his arm.
The crack of it breaking in two was enough to drag me off the floor and throw myself at her once more. She fought with me for under a second before tossing me off of her again and throwing me into yet another wall.
"Gee bear, when will you realize. I am hundreds of years older than you. You will never be as strong as me." She leaned down and picked me up, smashing my head into the wall multiple times before throwing me into another wall. She then strode back over to Mikey and kicked him in the ribs, probably cracking a couple.
This whole thing seemed pretty hopeless to me. I was feeling dizzy and out of, Mikey was clutching his shattered arm, trying not to cry, and Frank was in the corner whimpering. Lindsey on the hand was perfectly content as she continued her violent acts. Unfortunately she was right. Vampires grew stronger the longer they lived, polar opposites of humans. She had hundreds of years on me. There was no way that I could take her.
"Please Lindsey!" I begged hauling myself up into a sitting position against the wall. I could feel blood oozing out of the back of my head. This wasn't good, considering the fact that I hadn't eaten in a couple of days. I wouldn't last long if I lost too much blood. "Just leave them alone. You have nothing against them!" She smirked and sauntered over to Frank.
"Yeah, yeah, how cute but I'm having so much fun. So let's not." I hauled myself up, desperate to get her away from him. A dizzy wave hit me though and I cursed myself from not feeding from the blood bags Frank got me.
Lindsey crouched down in front of Frank, and before I could even do anything she leaned forward and ran her fangs over his throat, slicing it open. I always thought that Frank's blood would always be a self control tester for me, but as the blood curdling scream fell out of my mouth I knew I was wrong.
I know this is probably the time when we have a cliche love conquers all moment. And you don't know how badly I wished that this was one of those times. I would rise up against the fact that I was nearly dead again myself. I would fight her and win, and then save Frankie last minute and we would drive off into the sunset, happily ever after.
Reality though was that Frank continued to bleed out and I was finding it hard to sit up. I could see Mikey trying to get to the gun that he had wedged into the waistband of his jeans. He had most likely panicked when we came in. Now with his broken arm and cracked ribs combined with the awkward position he was in, he was having difficulty reaching it.
Lindsey grabbed Frank's wrist and I knew I had to do something before she drank him dry. Already he was choking on his own blood, his eyes wide and terrified. I made eye contact with Mikey, conveying a silent hurry up.
"Lindsey!" I called out. She stopped her advance on Frank and turned to me giving me a sugary sweet smile.
"Yes?" She strolled over to me, stopping and looking at Mikey. "I haven't had much fun with you," She stated as she jumped on his leg, breaking yet another bone. I gritted my teeth in rage as he cried out in pain.
"Lindsey!" I growled out. "Come here!" She giggled and skipped over to me.
"This is rather quite fun!" She chirped crossing her legs and sitting down across from me. "I'm hurting you all, and there is no big epic fight, because you're all kinda pathetic." She frowned slightly. "Perhaps there actually isn't enough fight."
I took that as my cue and summoned up all the strength that I had left in me to taking a final lunge at her. I wasn't trying to kill her, I was trying to keep her attention. Hopefully it would be long enough for Mikey to reach the gun.
She giggled with glee before slamming me into the floor. "This really is too easy, but so much fun!"
"You're psychotic," I hissed at her through gritted teeth. My vision was swimming and I wasn't sure how much longer I was gonna hold on for.
"Ah but at least I'm pretty," She clapped with glee. "But I'm getting bored again. I think I'll go back to Frankie if you don't mind."
She stood up, grinning down on me. Suddenly there was a loud bang and she collapsed, revealing Mikey behind her. The bullet had gone in through her back and exited out her stomach. She fell on top of me, her hand clamped over her stomach.
Silver bullets killed vampires very easily. Still he hadn't hit her in the head. She would probably live if we let her. I shoved her off of me, grimacing at all the blood. She had definitely fed very recently, and probably drained multiple people. The thought disgusted me.
"Mikey, get to Frank." He nodded and ran towards him. I knew he wasn't going to last much longer. The only reason he wasn't dead yet was because she hadn't cut deep. Still, telling from the amount of blood surrounding him, he needed medical attention and fast.
I groaned and began dragging myself over. By now Frank had passed out from blood loss. His life was in our hands now.
"Gee," Mikey warned. "He's not gonna make it." My eyes widened as I registered what he was implying.
"Mikey I can't!" I gasped. "He'd become a monster like me! I can't do that to him." Behind us I heard Lindsey laugh.
"Ah his conscious won't let him save his lover," She giggled to herself and rolled her head back. She was still bleeding out all over the floor, but she didn't seem to mind too much. I knew for a fact though that it was weakening her. "You couldn't even turn him if you wanted too! You don't have enough blood in your system. If you tried you would both die."
"Shut up!" Mikey screamed raising the gun up once more. I grabbed his hand though and lowered it.
"Mikey don't." I wasn't sure why I stopped him. I hated her guts, I really did. I waved it off though. I had to concentrate on Frank. Mikey seemed to realize this.
I crawled further forward and pulled Frank's head into my lap. I could feel it. Feel his heart beat slowing down to a dangerous rate. His throat continued to bleed sluggishly while I watched. I felt sobs coming up my throat. He was dying in my arms, and Lindsey was right. There was nothing I could do to save him.
Then for the first time in a year, tears dripped down my cheeks. I brought a hand up to my cheek, stunned, and pulled it away to see the salty wetness run down my finger tips. Then I sobbed even harder.
"Gerard!" Mikey screamed at me. "If you don't change him he's going to die! He'll end up just like Ray, dead because of all of this!"
"I don't have enough blood in my system to change him!" I tried to explain through the tears. "He needs my blood to change and I can't give that to him because I don't have enough of it! Even if I did he would end up like me, hurting people to survive. He wouldn't want to be like that!"
"There has to be something that we can do!" Mikey tried reasoning. I shook my head helplessly. My brain was too muddled, I couldn't think straight. I couldn't figure out a way to make it better. Lindsey laughing manically in the background was not making things any easier.
My Frankie was going to leave me and he would never be back. I failed him. I promised that I would protect him and I had broken that promise. At the end of the day I had let him die.
His heart beat continued to slow down as I held onto him and sobbed, tears pooling up and and falling over my eyelashes and dripping off my jaw.
"I'm sorry Frankie," I cried rocking his limp body back and forth. "I'm so so so sorry!"
And then his heart beat ceased...

THE END

Don't worry, I'm shitting you guys. I'm gonna post the epilogue tomorrow.

Sorry if you were hoping for a suspense action fight filled chapter. I felt like it would all be too cliche. I decided to do a more well believable approach. I was also slightly distracted because it was Doctor Who night with the season 8 premier. So if it sucks lemme know. Kay?
