Bright Lights That Cast A Shadow

Chapter Thirty Three

I paced the floor of the apartment and dialed Frank's number for the thirteenth time. I held it up to my ear, praying this time that he would pick up. I felt my heart plummet in my chest when I was greeted once again by his voicemail.
"Goddammit Frank!" I wailed throwing the phone onto the couch and collapsing on the floor. I couldn't get ahold of him to warn him. We had sold my car not too long ago, deciding that we didn't have enough money for both. Frank had taken his to work.
I was so fucking stupid. I should have recognizedthose dates sooner. Lindsey had truly thought this out. That was why she waited a year to get revenge, just so she could have the dates coincide with each other.
I scrabbled for my phone, pulling it out of the couch cushions. I pulled it out and began to dial a new number. They picked up after two rings.
"Hello?"
"Mikey!" I screeched, probably hurting his ears. "You need to come pick me up right now! It's really important!"
"Okay Gee, but what's going on?" His voice sounded tired and worn through. I knew he was still grieving, and I felt horrible about pulling him into this, but I had no other choice.

"I don't have time to explain on the phone. Just get here now! And bring the gun I gave you!" After Ray had died I had made sure to buy Mikey and Bob guns too. Frank unfortunately left his at home. Considering the fact that his work clothes consisted of skinny jeans and band t-shirts it was probably best, but on days like today I wish he would have taken it.
"Fine I'll be there soon. But you better explain."
"I will, I promise," I swore, resting my hand over my heart even though I knew he wouldn't be able to see the gesture. I heard him heave a sigh before hanging up. I promptly continued my maddening pacing. I remember my mother as a child, telling me to stop pacing because it annoyed her. I don't think she understood that I pace whenever I'm worried, or thinking, or just feel angsty.
Today I was feeling all three. Scared was also making the list tonight though. Frank always answered his phone. It was uncommon to see it not on his person at all times. The only time he really didn't have it on him was during showers and sleeping. He was always on call for his bands in case something happened. One time he had a drummer call in sick for a show two hours before it happened. He had been frantic trying to find one on such short notice. Of course Bob volunteered when he found out, but it just proved how much Frank cared about his bands.
My cellphone rang, and I nearly had a heart attack as I pounced on my phone. I tried my best not be be disappointed when I saw it was just Mikey.
"I'm here." He informed me sounding irritable, "But I don't understand why you couldn't just drive yourself. I mean seeing how I'm parked next to your fucking car." I froze, my blood (that wasn't really mine, but is besides the point) running cold. I felt my gut lurch and twist as the situation painted a picture of itself in my head.
"MIkey," I whispered, my pupils dilating in fear. "Frank took the car to work..." Silence reached me as we both started to realize what this meant.
"Fuck! Get down here right now!" Mikey commanded, sounding scared for our friend. I nodded to myself, hanging up. Even though it was broad daylight, I didn't care. I locked up the apartment and used my vampire speed to get to the car, throwing myself into the passenger seat and startling Mikey. He nodded at me in hello and started the car.

"Where are we heading?" He had stopped at the edge of the parking lot and was about to turn into traffic. I pondered his question. I couldn't be positive that Lindsey had taken Frank. Maybe he just had walked to work today. My heart told me this wasn't the case, but I had no other ideas.
"Lets go to Skeleton Crew," I told Mikey. He nodded and pulled out, turning left.
"So explain," He demanded keeping his eyes on the road, but giving me a quick sideways glance. I fiddled with my phone nervously.
"Well as you already know this is all because of James..." He nodded, not speaking up and letting me continue. "Well I figured it out today. All the dates she's done something to me have been first times with James." I explained feeling a little sick. She made Frank leave the same day we met. She hurt Bob on our first date. Got me fired on our first kiss. Got uh...Ray...on our first time having sex." I rattled them off on my fingers. Mikey winced and I saw his eyes well up slightly when I said Ray's name and I felt myself cringe. He took a couple of deep breaths to compose himself, but was keeping a near death grip on the steering wheel.
"So what's next?" He finally muttered out. I tensed up, not wanting to share that information. He glanced at me again. "Gerard..." His voice held a calm pretense, but I knew that he was equally as scared as me, if not more.
"Well her boyfriend ended up dead so..." I trailed off, feeling the sobs coming on. "And now Frank won't pick up his phone, and I'm scared Mikey!"
"We'll find him Gee. It'll be alright. I swear." I gazed up at him sadly.

"Don't make promises that you can't keep," I said softly. He frowned but said nothing more, much to my relief. We were silent for the majority of the rest of the car ride.
"She wasn't even his," I whispered sadly. Mikey's eyebrows shot up.
"What?"
"She was the other woman, not me." I explained. "I found a picture of us on our first date, and she's in the background kissing some other guy. I don't think you would bring your boyfriend to the same bar as your girlfriend, and they watch her suck off some guys face." I picked at a loose thread in my jeans with my slender fingers. "She lied to me that night. She knew exactly what was going on. I don't know exactly what happened, but I think she was just a jealous bitch."
By now we had pulled up in front of Skeleton Crew, and Mikey had relinquished his death grip on the steering wheel, settling his hands in his lap instead. He turned to look at me, and grabbed my shoulder, making sure he had my attention.
"We're going to find both of them, Lindsey and Frank. And we're going to make Lindsey pay for what she did to all of us. She already took the man I loved away from me, and I swear to God I won't let her do he same to you." I was touched by his speech, but was only half believing it.

More promises that might be broken...
