so Long and Good Night (part 1)

Goodbye Helena

Everything shined. The blood red satin drapes, the pale and colorless stained glass windows and the cherry wood finished coffin all shined. But the people didn't. People filed into the church slowly like zombies, all wearing black. Women in black knee length dresses and fish net face coverings sat with their husbands in black suits and gray ties in the rows of pews. The minimal amount of talking there was quieted as a man in his twenties with long, black ,stringy hair and a red tie cleared his voice at the podium. He had gray circles under his eyes that told all.
"Im glad to have known Helena for the small amount of time and we're all sad to see her go." the man studders. "Im glad to have been a part of her life and i hope she was glad to be part of mine.Thank you." He walks off the stage and heads towards the back of the church.
"Hay man you did good" Frank says, greeting him in the back corner.
"Thanks Frank" Gerard replies.
Frank leads Gerard back out to the service and they stand to the back left of the stage watching the preacher speak.
"-and we thank you god for have given us this beautiful soul." Gerard wipes a tear that had rolled down his cheek with his sleeve. Frank puts his arm around Gerards shoulder to comfort him and he smiles. Three other men join behind Frank and Gerard. The preacher looks at the group of them and nods. Frank, Gerard, Bob, Ray and Mikey step up to the stage and each take a hold of one of the bronze handels on the side of the coffin. Gerard stands infront of the still open coffin stareing inside with a blank look. Helena's eyes are closed and her pale, white skin looked like someone tried to conceal it. Her wavy, jet black, hair stopped at her shoulders. Helena wore a short, black and red dress that ruffled at the end. The sides if the dress were laced together with red ribbon. She held a bouquet of black roses that she cluthched tightly to her chest.
"Gerard.." Mikey said smiling at him softly. Gerard smiled back and moved over to the side of the coffin and gripped the handle. The preacher lowered the coffin lid and Helena dissapeared into it. Gerard and Ray carried the front of the coffin slowly down the couple steps. They made their way down the center of the church on the long, red rug that lead to the large doors. Everyones sorrow filled eyes followed them down the isle. Once the coffin made it to the doors of the church the women and men in their black clothes followed behind them with umbrellas .
Rain poured down from the dark sky and onto the mourning people. Gerard helped carry the coffin to the open doors of the van. The cars interior was a red, silky fabric that hung loose from the sides in bundles. Gerard and Ray layed the front of the coffin down into the back of the van and Frank, Mikey and Bob pushed it from the back. The group stood infront of the open doors stareing at the coffin they had just carried. While everyone watched ,the effect that she was going and would never come back hit them all. This was their last goodbye. Gerard pulled together the spreaded doors and peared in at the coffin for the last time. The vans engine came to life and the car drove away leaving Gerard in the middle of the street, in the pouring rain, alone."So long, and good night." he wispered as the black van dissapeared into the distance.
