Way Out
We got to the front door to my house and I put my keys in the lock. "Wow, your house is really nice." Gerard crooned, looking up at the large window.
"Is it? I guess I wouldn't notice, I've lived here all my life." I acknowledged, turning the handle and pushing the door open. We both stepped into the hallway and I kicked my shoes off and pushed them to the side, motioning for Gerard to do the same.
"You've never been anywhere else?" Gerard furrowed his eyebrows slightly, looking at me.
"Nope" I retorted, exaggerating the p slightly. "Do you move around a lot then?" I turned my head to look back at Gerard.
"Yeah." He nodded. "I've never had a permanent home, my dad has to move a lot because of his job. Though, I quite like it here, this is one of the nicer places we've lived at."
Gerard continued his answer and something turned in my stomach, I didn't like the idea of him moving away. I wasn't sure why I had become so fond of him in the few days that I'd known him and it was confusing me.
"What's wrong?" Gerard said innocent and I became aware of the concerned expression on my face.
"Nothing" I gave him a pretend smile, hoping that he couldn't see through it. "Let's go upstairs." I beckoned for Gerard to follow me, but he stood still, looking at me with a face of bewilderment. "My guitar, Gerard. It's in my room." I prompted.
"Oh- Oh yeah, sorry." He shook his head and followed me up the staircase, but he still looked like he was thinking about something. I shrugged my shoulders and shook it off. We got to the door of my bedroom and I immediately remembered the mess it was in.
"Just, just wait here a second." I walked into my room and shut the door in his face before I quickly shoved everything on the floor underneath my bed. I threw the dirty underpants in my wardrobe and hid several magazines behind my radiator. "Sorry, come in." He walked in and stood in the middle of the room, as if he was assessing it.
"S'nice" He smiled softly and it didn't look fake, but sincere. I reached for my guitar which was propped up against my wardrobe. "Come sit down." I patted the spot next to me on my bed and Gerard complied.
I strummed across the strings slightly to check it was still in tune. "What do you want me to play?" Gerard took his attention away from the guitar and looked up at me.
"Whatever you like" He shrugged, looking down awkwardly. At first I strummed about, just playing a few random chords before I made my mind up on a song. I started to play the opening to "Where Is My Mind" by The Pixies and Gerard lifted his head at the familiar tune. He stayed quiet at first, but when I got to the chorus Gerard sang some of the words softly to himself.
Unanticipatedly, I heard a key in the lock. "Fuck, that must be my mum. Why is she home so early?" I muttered to myself and stopped playing the guitar.
"Work finished early today so I'm home sooner than usual. I also went to the shops and I picked up more of those cookies that you- Frankie?" She paused when she realised I wasn't in the living room like she'd assumed I was. She walked up to my room and was about to continue when she saw Gerard, she looked him up and down slowly. "Oh, you have a friend over. Is he staying for dinner?" She said with a strange tone in her voice, I could tell she thought it was strange that I had someone over. After all, I'm hardly a people person.
"I- uh- I've actually got to go, sorry. See you around Ier- Frank." Gerard corrected the nickname that he would usually use and hurriedly picked up his bag, walking past my mum and out of the front door.
"He seemed nice." My mum said and I smiled weakly. I could tell she wanted to know more about him, but she didn't hassle me because she knew I wouldn't say much. Instead, she just closed my door and went back downstairs.
