Wolf Hearts
Chapter 3
Here I was, standing at her door. Mom was asleep and I didn't want to be alone, well, mostly I just wanted to see if Sally was okay, she freaked out last night after I told her that she smelled bad. I knocked on the door, I heard footsteps before someone stopped at the door. They unlocked the door and opened it
"Hi Frank" Sally smiled
"Hi Sally"
"What are you doing here?"
"I was wondering if you wanted to stroll around town"
"Why?"
Yeah, Frank, why? I had to come up with a reason before I started sputtering out random stuff.
"Since you're new, I thought you'd maybe like to know where everything is"
"Oh, yeah. That would be nice"
She stepped out of her apartment, wearing this long green dress with long sleeves and carrying a brown paper bag.
"What's that?"
"My lunch"
"Oh, cool"
After that little incident, we walked out of the complex, she was following me. Mr. and Mrs. Quinn were standing outside having a smoke, trying to whisper a conversation to each other. I heard every word as we passed by
"Did you hear that the police found Adam's bones in the river last night?"
"Yeah, they say that everything was stripped from the body and completely licked clean"
"I heard that an identical murder happened over by Wiley Rd."
That sounds creepy, but being in Jersey, it didn't surprise me that there was some kind of serial killer in the neighborhood. I looked over at Sally and she turned bone white, apparently she didn't like murder.
"Hey Sally, you okay?" I asked grabbing her hand and turning her towards me
"Yeah, it's just, that thing they were talking about is disgusting"
"Yeah, it's shocking what kind of monsters show up here"
"Right....." Her eyes traveled down as she whispered that
She was uncomfortable talking about this, so I changed the subject and asked if she wanted some candy from the drugstore. She shook her head and kept looking at the ground.
"Hey? Sally? Do you want to talk about anything, you look like something's bothering you"
"Well, I was wondering if I smelt better compared to yesterday"
I laughed and she cracked a couple giggles as well
"Yes, you smell better"
"What do I smell like?"
I gave her a funny look, she didn't notice because she stuck her hand in front of my nose. I took a small sniff and immediately wanted more, she had a fresh strawberry aroma around her, it's true when people say girls smell better than guys.
"Like strawberries"
"Good, that means I don't smell like death"
She cracked a few chuckles before going back to normal
"Will you still come to the drugstore with me?"
"It can't hurt"
I don't know why we were quiet until after I bought the candy, but we were, when I opened the first one, I looked at her and asked
"Are you sure you don't want one?"
She went into deep thought, before holding her hand out, allowing me to place one on it. She unwrapped it and quickly put it in her mouth. She chewed it for a while before smiling
"I like it"
I don't know why, but I felt like I just did something miraculous and was proud of it. I was too lost in my thoughts to notice that she ran out the door and was doubled over. I ran out and stood behind her, she was shivering and making these awful choking noises, I put my hand on her back and started rubbing it, the fabric of her dress was very soft and felt-like. Sally stopped choking and sat down on the curb, ringing her hands in her lap
"So, you can't eat candy?"
She shook her head and put her hands over her eyes
"You could've told me, I would've understood"
"I'm sorry Frank, I'm so sorry" she whispered
The next thing that happened, I can't really explain. I just wrapped my arms around her and stayed in that position. I felt her hands grab one of my arms and squeeze it gently. Then we just sat there, not saying a word, just holding each other and breathing softly. About five minutes passed before Sally broke the silence, by asking if we could go have a picnic. I said sure and we walked to the town central park. We sat down at the swings and pulled out our food, all I had was twenty Now&Laters and a water bottle, what she had blew me away. Four different sandwiches, a ziploc bag with a bloody steak inside, and a thermos filled with some kind of liquid.
"That's, a strange lunch"
"I know, but I can only really stomach meat"
"Really?"
"And some vegetables, but not much else"
"Huh, I'm completely the opposite. I can't eat meat because I can't stomach it"
"This won't, disgust you, will it?"
"No, it's fine, I'll be fine"
She smiled before digging into her first sandwich, she was a strange girl indeed, very strange.
