Well They Encourage Your Complete Cooperation
chapter 2
Frank drove down the nearly empty interstate, answering questions thrown his way from Gerard
"So where do you live?"
"In an apartment."
"Haha. Very funny. Seriously."
"Seriously. How do I know you won't go back in the morning and tell those creepy as fuck guys where I live and let them murder me?"
"Are you being serious right now? I am running away from them. Not running towards them."
"Whatever."
"So. How much longer until your place?" Frank couldn't help but notice Gerard was more stiff in the back seat.
"I dunno. Maybe like, ten minutes?"
"Oh."
He managed to keep quiet the rest of the ride home, occasionally peeking out the back window to see if anyone was following them. And ten minutes later, Frank pulled into his designated parking space outside of the dingy apartment building, and walked to the main door. Gerard followed him closely up the steps, glancing over his shoulder what seems like every other step.
"Can we... Can we hurry up the pace a little bit?" He stuttered over his words as Frank fumbled with a many keys that he managed to fit on the small ring he eventually found the one to his apartment, and pushed it into the lock, opening the heavy metal door.
"It's not much, but it's home." Frank said as he threw his keys onto the counter. He grabbed himself a beer from the small fridge and offered Gerard one.
"No, thanks. I don't drink"
"Suit yourself."
He popped the top and downed half the bottle in one go.
"So, TV?"
Gerard nodded and Frank showed him to the dingy couch sitting in the middle of the living room. He flipped through some channels until he stopped on some old horror film, filled with lots of fake blood and crappy effects. The two sat and commented on how bad the movie was while Frank drank nearly a while case of beer, and was pretty out of it.
"Sooooo... Gerard." He drew out the vowels as he slouched back against the couch. "You have a job?"
Gerard, who had loosened up after Frank had locked the front door and proved he did, tensed up again, but he hoped Frank didn't notice.
"At uh, um comic store. Nothing flashy. You?"
Frank took another swig of beer before throwing the now empty bottle down to the floor and answering, "I own a record store down on Main Street here in Belleville. No biggy."
Gerard's eyes became wide with wonder, and Frank couldn't help but think he looked like a baby deer. A very cute, red haired baby deer.
"What's it like? Y'know, being surrounded by music everyday? You like music, right?"
"I do, don't get me wrong," he started. "But some days it fucking sucks. I never get to actually listen to any music, because my business partner gets these nasty headaches when it's too loud, right? so there's no fucking point in listening to The Misfits when it's quiet. And all the damn hipster kids, FUCK they make me so angry..." His fists balled at his sides, and Gerard got a clue that he was getting a little too worked up about this.
"Frank, I think it's time for bed."
Frank began to throw a tantrum like a two year old, about how he wanted just ONE more beer, why couldn't anything nice happen to him for a long time? But Gerard grabbed him by the arm and led him down the only hallway in the small apartment, opening each door in search of Franks room.
Frank tried to tell him it was the last door on the left, but all he managed out was "nyungh, lefgh"
He felt Gerard guide him across his floor, maneuvering him around the tall stacks of dirty laundry that he should've done weeks ago, but never got around to.
He he finally sat him down when his shins hit the hard frame of the mattress. He laid down, and let Gerard pull the covers up to his chin and elevate his head. Frank tried to thank him, and tell him that he didn't have to do this, but ultimately failed, tripping over his own words.
His is eyes were fluttering shut when he hard a "G'night, Frank" and he could've sworn he felt a fair of dry lips press to his forehead.
But it he was way past drunk, so it was totally his imagination, right?
