Melody of Innocence

prologue.

Every person has a heart; every heart has a melody.

Each melody is different from the other. A melody could be happy, could be sad, could be melancholic, could just scream 'DIE' to your face. A melody could be a certain genre as well - the possibilities are simply endless. The only thing they all have in common was simply the fact that their melodies are broken; incomplete, a lonely piece from a 2-part song.

It is possible for the same melody to belong to two or more people. But never at the same time - unless the two people are in love, then their broken melodies will mend together and become one, ever since the moment they meet, to the day the world ends, a crescendo striking in all the perfectly imperfect melodies, rising in volume everywhere - then the melodies gently come striking down into a mere soft purr, then the world will end completely (not with a bang, but a whimper, as that is how pathetic our world truly is).

A person's melody can change from time to time. It simply depends on the people they have met, the people they meet, and the people they will meet. Our world may be pathetic; but we are strong in our own way - we can affect other people more than we'll ever know.

No one can hear their own melody. Generally, they also cannot hear another person's, no matter how loud it is, no matter the fact that their hearts are practically screaming out the melody. Only several people can listen to another's melody. Only five people who listen can live in the world at a time.

This ability is passed down genetically, making only those five families able to truly listen to people's heart. But two of them have made the grave mistake of meeting each other... and falling in love. They had a healthy child, but the girl's father - the creator of a mistake - passed away by a car crash the moment his daughter was born.

The girl was raised by her mother alone, who taught her of people's melodies, how it worked, and how the two of them were special and gifted.

One day, a conversation struck between the girl and her mother.

"Mom?" she asked, her wavy brown hair hanging down her shoulders. She was only six-years old at the time. She was beginning to understand her powers. "You said we can listen to people's melodies, right?"

"Yes, dear," her mother answered with a smile.

"But... why don't you have a melody? Why don't I have a melody?"

"Dear, as I said, you cannot listen to your own melody," she explained again.

"How about yours?"

The girl could remember how her mother's eyes darkened and how she hung her head low. "Because of a... mistake that your father and I committed... I no longer have a melody. And, as a consequence, you never had one."

The girl was too young to understand that far at the time. But as she grew, the words finally made sense in her head, and when she was an adolescent, she got mad at her mother and locked herself inside her room for a week.

That was when she was eleven years old. Five years ago. Now, the girl was sixteen years old. I was sixteen years old. She just moved schools for her 10th grade. I just moved schools for my 10th grade. In fact, I also moved houses from a different state to here.. Now, I lived in Belleville, New Jersey. My first week of school was due to come in three days, and I was currently lying down on her bed, shaking with nerves.

I am the girl.

And I am sick of hearing all these melodies everywhere I go, yet find total silence in my house. For someone who had the ability of listening, I sure lead an awfully quiet life. A life where I have no friends to talk to, nothing to talk about, no one to talk to. After all, I don't have a melody. There is nothing to change; nothing to mend with. I was just silence.

I let out a one-syllable laugh. How ironic.
