Save Yourself, I'll Hold Them Back
What's The Worst that I Can Say?
I turned to Gee, "Look for a flashlight."
Gerard scanned through the objects in the room before jumping over Dr. Laguna's body to the back table. He rummaged through the broken items before snatching a flashlight. He smacked it against the table a few times before the light fluttered and turned on completely. He jumped over the dead body again before standing next to me. He pointed the light in the tunnel to reveal cockroaches scattering.
I looked at him, "Do you know the way out?"
Gerard shrugged, "I just assume we keep walking forward."
Ray's voice said, That doesn't seem like a good answer. Try to look for a map in the room.
"Try to look for a map." I repeated to Gerard.
Gerard nodded before handing me the flashlight. He walked around the room, his eyes scanning the walls. He scringed his nose and placed a hand on his hip, "Frankie, I think I found it but it's kind of dirty." He snatched it off the wall and handed it to me, "I think we keep heading forward until we see two another tunnels and make a right turn."
The map was beaten up with stains. It was hard to read but overall Gee was right about the direction. I nodded, "Okay, let's go." I took the first step into the tunnel and felt a crunch underneath my shoe. I gave a disgusted face when a cockroach limped out from under. I held the flashlight and pointed the way while Gerard held my hand. His chin rested on my shoulder as we walked through the dirty, old, infested tunnel. It was really disgusting but if we made it out into the forest we can see daylight again. We can leave and disappear...together.
I smiled a bit at Gerard whose eyes were up ahead. His hazel eyes were bright but his pupils were small from fright.
I said, "Don't be scared. I'm here. I wouldn't let anything hurt you."
He looked at me and smiled, "Promise?"
"But of course. What is Mario without his Peach?"
"What is Superman without his Lois?"
I chuckled a bit, "What is-" a large bang from behind startled us both. I stopped and flashed the light behind us to find a small figure underneath the doorframe from which we came. Patrick's voice called out, "Is anyone there? I can see your light! We're going to call the police so you might as well come out and show yourself!" His voice bounced off the tunnels' walls.
I grasped onto Gerard's hand and rushed him down from the opposite side where Patrick was. Our shoes smacked against the ground as we ran down the flat surface. My heart was pounding against my chest as we ran hand in hand. I wasn't going back. Not after what I have done.
To my surprise, Gerard pulled his hand away. "Stop, stop!"
Before I could say anything, my eye caught that we were about to pass our right turn. Gee held out his hand, "Hurry." He said. I held his hand as he lead us down the right tunnel. It seemed that in a few short ten minutes, we can see the sunlight ahead at the end of the tunnel. I wasn't sure if it was just me, but I could already smell the forest air. The pinecones, the flowers, and the oak trees. I rushed myself faster, excited about the freedom.
The light burned my eyes for a while, but at this moment, I didn't care. This was it. This was what I was expecting. I know I haven't been trapped as much as Gee has, so I can't imagine what he's feeling right now. My eyes adjusted to the light outside so I turned to Gee...his face expression was nothing what I imagined. I was imagining a smile, or a tear. But he looked ashamed, sad. I didn't know what it was until I turned to the direction where his eyes were glancing at.
Patrick was standing in front of us.
