The Light Behind His Eyes
Chapter Three
When I was done for the day, around 7 p.m., I had already picked out an apartment. It was only a few streets down, which was an easy 10 to 15 minute walk. That meant I didn't have to waste gas, which was something I was extremely happy about.
When I walked into the average looking apartment, it immediately felt like home. I wasn't ready to lay down, though. I wanted to explore my childhood town and see things, or even people, I haven't seen in a long time. I grabbed my coat from the couch and put it back on before walking outside. It was a quiet town, not much to see, but I was determined to look around-maybe I'll even see Frank around.
I walked through the cold wind, shoving my hands into my pockets. I tucked in my lips, just to see if I could still feel them. At that point, I found my way walking into a doughnut shop. It was a long line, no surprise there.
My eyes glanced around the room, and hell, there he was. His eyes were focused on a book he had purchased just today. It was a small town, so it was normal to see a person again a few times. I tried to keep my train of thought. I turned my attention to the menu, maybe I'll have a nice hot cup of coffee with whipped cream-I wonder if he wants anything. I looked at Frank. He didn'thave a coffee, but a doughnut beside his book. In a brief twenty minutes, I was at the front of the line, I ordered two coffees and made my way to Frank. I sat down in the empty seat in front of him. His eyes looked up at me. He leaned back into his chair and tapped his finger against the table, "Hey, you're that guy who sold me the books."
I nodded, "Yes, and my name is Gerard." I pushed the coffee toward his direction.
Frank gestured to the coffee, "Is this for me, Gerard?"
"Well, I saw you eating a doughnut so I thought, 'maybe he would want coffee with that'." I smiled.
Frank hesitated for a brief moment before taking my gift against his lips. He took a quick sip and nodded after, "Thanks. What's the catch?"
He was more clever than I had thought. I grinned as I leaned in slightly, "I want to get to know you more."
Frank raised a brow, "Oh? And why's that? Love at first sight?" He joked.
"...no. I grew up here, in this town. Before I left, when I was in the middle of my freshman year in high school...I've never seen you around."
Frank scoffed as he took another sip of his coffee, "I wouldn't blame you. I was sort of an outcast-still am, as you can tell."
I smiled, "Yeah, I can tell." My eyes glanced at his clothing.
Frank smiled, leaning in toward me, "If I didn't know any better, I would say you were checking me out."
My face burned hot, "What? No, I'm not-"
Frank laughed, "I was joking, it's okay." He smiled, "Thanks for the coffee. I have to go." He gathered his things, leaving me in a stunned position. I thought he already had left, but his breath brushed against my ear as he whispered, "And it's okay if you were because I was checking you out too." I can hear the smile in his voice.
I grinned. I looked out the large window, just to catch a glimpse of him. He was already staring at me, waving bye before disappearing around the corner. The thing was, I wasn't sure if he was kidding or not. And the strange part was, a part of me was hoping he wasn't.
So much pressure on Patrick
