We Were Born to Lose

All day all I could think about was my date with Parker. He would be here any minute now. I was wearing a shimmery black top with gold skull and bones and black ripped skinny jeans with high tops. I had pulled my hair in a pony tail and was just waiting downstairs for Parker to pick me up. We weren't going to dinner or anything, we hated awkward stuff like that. We would probably just see a movie or go on a walk or something cute like that. I look out the window and see him get out of his car. He runs up to the porch and knocks on the door. I smile and open it. "Hey!" I say he kisses me on the cheek and I follow him to his beat up car, Parker was probably the best thing to ever happen to me. His friend Kassidy worked with me at a coffee shop and introduced us. It was like love at first site, sorry to be so cheesy. Parker drives us down to the mall. We loved walking around and messing with people, catching up with all the nice shop owners and getting kicked out by the mean ones. "I thought we could just hang out tonight and walk around." He says. "Yeah sure." I say and get out. We walk in only to bump right into Kassidy. "Oh hey guys! I was just closing up, you think I could walk around?" Um this is a date dear. "Yeah of course!" Parker says. What? "Um Parker don't you think she would just feel like a third wheel with this being a date and all." I say, trying not to sound like a bitch. "Oh I'm sure she'll be fine." He says, not taking the hint. I grit my teeth. Kassidy goes to Parker's other side and we keep walking. "Ooh let's go there!" She points to Teavana. Eegh. I HATE tea. "Yeah of course." Parker says. "Parker I thought you didn't like tea." I say. "Well I'm sure we won't be there long and Kassidy wants to go." "Oh right for Kassidy." I mumble under my breath. He studies me. "Are you okay?" Of course I'm not O fucking K. "I'm fine." I kiss his cheek. "Okay you know you don't have to go in. I know you hate the smell." He says. I smile. He remembered. He walks toward the store when Kassidy and I'm forced to wait alone. Now I'm not an idiot. It was obvious Kassidy had some sort of thing for my Parker. Why? She's the one who set us up. Maybe I'm just being paranoid. They come back out laughing. I smile and try not to look like the socially awkward loser I am. I wasn't having much fun. "Hey Parker I think I'm gonna go. I'm kind of tired." I say. He looks at me worriedly. "I can drive you." He says. "No um I think I'll just walk." I nod. He gives me another anxious look. "Okay." We kiss and I walk back towards the exit. I didn't really feel like going home to hear my parents complain about why I'm not good enough. I mean I ask myself that enough without them constantly reminding me I had the most amazing sister in the world. I decide to go to Mikey's and see if we could play some video games.
When I walk in Mikey is on a stool looking for food in the high cabinets. Gerard is raiding the fridge again. "Mikey! Get down from there before you fall!" I say and put my stuff down. I rush over and pick him up. "What made you think that was okay." I say and tickle his stomach. He laughs till I set him back down. "So you just come here whenever?" Gerard asks. "Well yeah. I've known them my whole life. I still can't believe she never mentioned she had another son." I say. "Maybe she's embarrassed." Mikey says with a laugh. I get down to his height. "Hey do you think we could play Zelda? Could you set it up for us?" I ask. "Of course!" He says and runs to the living room. I whip back around. "Where's your mom?" I ask. "She went to sleep. I'm still confused as to why you just walk in here whenever you want." "I spend more time here than I do at home and it just got to the point where I didn't need to knock anymore." I say. "Um why is Mikey still awake anyway?" "If you thought he would be asleep why would you come over." "He's Mikey. And I just didn't want to go home okay. Can we quit the interrogation now?" "Gracie! It's ready!" Mikey shouts from the other room. "You gonna watch?" I ask. He raises an eyebrow. "You think I have nothing better to go on a Friday night than watch my little brother play Zelda with his babysitter?" "That is what it looks like yes." I say. "Fine."
