Fake Your Death

Chapter 19 - So Watch My Back

He slammed the door as he fell into the car. Even without the dim car light, you would have been able to sense how livid he was. His hands gripped tightly around the dark leather wheel; so hard, I thought his deep purple veins would explode. I tried my best to hide in the dark corner, away from his sight. I’m scared. Petrified out of my skin. Gerard is in some extremely deep shit.

I just wish that we could go back to when we first met. Or back to when we married. Oh how I wish we could. I tried to hold back my tears as Gerard soared out the factories grounds. I wrapped my fingers around the bar on the door as we spun round each corner. The only thing in my mind is, I’m going to die now and Tilly will never be safe. Cars flashed by us as the speed picked up even more. I could tell Mikey was beginning to panic next to me. His breathing became faster as his legs began to jitter. I reached for his hand in attempt to calm him down. Gerard eyes flickered in the mirror before speeding the car even faster. He was doing it on purpose.
“Gerard! Slow down. You’re giving Mikey a panic attack” I screamed as I shuffled over to Mikey. I was now stroking his back as he became more panicky.
“Please Gerard. I’m begging you. He’s your brother for god’s sake. He’s done nothing wrong. Please.” Suddenly I got plunged back into the seats as Gerard slammed on the breaks. I signed as he slowed down and pulled over.

Carefully, I guided Mikey out of the car and on to the side of the road. We both placed ourselves on the uncomfortable ground. The cool air calming us down. It was only then and now that it hit me how beautiful New Jersey was at night. I laid down on the cold, damp grass and watched the stars. It always fascinated me how we know next to nothing about what’s out there. If we are alone in this enormous universe. What is beyond our galaxies boundaries? Are there people like us? If my life had turned out differently, I wouldn’t of mind becoming an astrophysicist. The Universe is a strange and interesting place. I changed my thoughts to what was around me. All I can hear was the slow crushing of rocks as the sea. It sounds so pretty.

“Hey Mikes, do you want to go down to the sea? I think it will help calm you down a bit,” I asked, sitting up. He nodded, still shaking. I hastly stood up, helping Mikey stand up at the same time. I peered into the car to see if he was watching. It’s too dark to tell. Reluctantly, I crossed the road with Mikey following closely. The smell of the sea filled the air as we reached the sand. I pulled off my polka dotted converse and socks and threw them to the ground. Then I ran. I ran because I’m free; well for now. My feet dug themselves in the soft sand as tiny waves hugged them. I let my hair flow over my face as I concentrated on the waves that stood over the horizon dancing with the moon. In the distance grandly stood a ship as it sailed to its next adventure. I felt someone’s presence behind me. I know it’s not Mikey. They aren’t timid enough. There is someone behind me on a beach and this time I know who it is.

“Were you on the beach the night of your funeral?” I asked, not looking behind me. I felt his warmth stand next to me, watching the waves dance as well. Slightly, I turned my head to observe his harsh face. It was cold and bitter yet was tired and weak at the same time. His sharp eyes frowned as they concentrated on the silver wisps in the water. Gerard snapped out of his daydream and turned to look at me. Our bodies only inches away.
“No. I was in New York by that time.” His blackened eyes stared intensely into mine. He seemed to be telling the truth yet in the back of my mind, I know he’s lying.
“I know you don’t believe me. I wish I could explain but I don’t want you dead…or worse,” he continued. He pushed a small, pink bag into my hand that felt slightly heavy. “Your favourite,” he said before going back to the hidden car. Cautiously, I opened the bag to find tiny strawberry sweets covered in a thin layer of sugar. He remembered.

When I was little, we lived in a small village located in the middle of the English Countryside. It was so minute that everyone knew each other so much that we were like one big family. Well that was until a massive fire destroyed the biggest house in the village, killing all inside. It broke us, so we slowly drifted apart. There was now an enormous house half broken standing weak in the square, there for everyone to see. Its windows were hollow and disappeared into no-where. The bricks held burnt vines, latching onto their last life support. Everywhere stank off smoke and the lavender that once shaped the outside of the house. We became scared to walk past it. So scared we moved. And there ended our lives that had only a small passage of light.

I stared up at the Way’s old home. It reminded me of the village. The happy memories that it once held. Mikey whimpered at its sight while the older Way brother prepared his guns. He looked so comfortable around them. I looked but up at the glaring house. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, the houses details became clearer. There was next to no door but just a plank of wood instead. Apart from that, everything was impossible to see from the garden. It looped and twirled itself around anything it could grab. Soaring to above the first floor. Every window was damaged in some way or another. One even had an extremely rusty bed hanging out of it. It broke my heart to see a once happy family home now a hang out from tramps and teenagers wanting to experiment.

“You ready?” Gerard asked, turning around to us. Mikey and I both nodded, reaching for the nearest gun. “Okay, good. Follow me at all times. If I tell you to run, you run. I will always go first no matter what. I don’t know what’s in there.” He looked out the window to the house before opening the door. We followed silently onto the deserted road. Together, we approached the house, stepping over the fallen down gate. I watched as Gerard ducked under the plank of wood. Then it was my turn.
“Watch my back Mikey” I said, before going it.

I was unsure what it was at first. But then I felt the foot. Then the hands. Then the blood. Gerard quickly covered my mouth with his hand to deafen my scream. As my eyes attuned to the obscurity, I saw the figure dangling from the ceiling. They were kept up by a single rope around their waist causing the rest of their body to dangle as though they were falling. A thick, crust of blood cover the feet and hands, only damp in some areas. I sudden ruffle from the door scared me more. There is still the possibility that we are not alone. I tightened my grip on the gun’s lever; ready for anything.
“I can’t do this Gerard” Mikey called out, “I’ve seen it and I can’t go in. I’m sorry Jade.” Gerard sighed before replying;
“Fine, go wait in the car and be quiet,” he said, in a much quieter voice. He then turned to me, “It’s a warning sign.” I looked back up at the dead corpse. What a waste of life.

I felt like throwing up. Ever room scared me and haunted my thoughts. There is still no signs of life or Tilly. I peered around one of corners to find well painted white walls covered in bloody hand prints with a single hand placed neatly in the middle of the floor. I cautiously backed out the room and into the next. I really wish I didn’t. Piled high in the middle of the room was 1000’s of decapitated arms. Whoever did this is a mad person. One who shouldn’t be let loose. My fear of losing Tilly is even greater now. In the blink of an eye, the closed the door and clasped on the floor.
“You okay Jade?” Gerard asked. Why does he sound so calm? Surely he’s seen the other rooms as well. “I think I’ve found something at the end of the corridor” he whispered. He placed his hand on mine and guided me up. I landed face to face with him. So close, I could feel his warm, damp breath on my skin. I backed away, trying not to give him any ideas. He walked away towards the mysterious door at the end. It was hidden in the corner, naked from the human eye.
“You ready?” he asked, placing his hand on the door knob. I nodded my response. Gently, he turned it. It was empty except for a single chair. Once again in the middle. I gulped at its sight. Blood stains dragged along the floor, leading up to it. I found myself walking up to it. It seems like her. Gerard appeared next to me and leaned down to look at the chair.
“Look” he said. I peered down to his hands to see a note. Childishly, I snatched it out of his hands. I tugged it open and began to read it out loud.

“Like one that on a lonesome road doth walk in fear and dread,
and having once turned 'round, walks on, and turns no more his head,
because he knows a frightful fiend doth close behind him tread.”

“What do you think it means?” I questioned. I skimmed over it again, trying to deduct a message.
“I think it means she’s gone," he replied, looking up at me.

Notes

Please bare with me with the chapters at the moment. We only have one laptop in my house and my mum is really busy with work so I don't have it all the time.
I'm trying my best. It should be better in a couple of weeks.

This chapter is so dark and they probably will get darker :3 Not too much. This was the longest chapter yet.
