From The Coffee Shop To...

Can We Get a Gig?

“Good morning sir! Boy you sure are an early bird this morning. I said quietly laughing. WHY WAS I TALKING LIKE THIS.
“Ha! Yes I am, wake up too many times in my sleep sometimes so I figured I might as well take advantage of it.” the mystery man spoke quite softly. I smiled, understanding where he was coming from. I went to go make his drink while he stood by the front of the shop facing outside. And I just stared. It had been such a long time since I’ve been so hypnotized by a man’s appearance. I mean sure celebrities and musical icons but this was real life and it was happening. To me. He had a pale complexion but it was complimented by his jet black hair that hung just above his shoulders and that black leather jacket. Good god. And those eyes,I couldn’t keep my eyes off them when we spoke before. He had hazel eyes, but they were so much more than that. They were mysterious. I didn’t know what that head was thinking while he looked outside, he started wandering toward a bulletin board we had posted in the shop. He picked up a flyer that was posted and stared at it. When he turned around to look at me, I had realized that I hadn’t even started his damn coffee. What an ass.
“Ah sorry it’s taking so long, you’re the first customer and it’s so early.” I half lied. Like I was going to say ‘oh haha sorry it’s taking so long to make one coffee I’ve been studying you from afar at 6 in the morning no big deal’
He smiled and shrugged, hopefully believing what I just said.
“So, hey who’s in charge of booking the bands for the weekends? This is really awesome.”
“Usually my supervisor handles all that, and he’s out of town this weekend…”I trailed off. “…but he usually listens to the locals and he calls them up to set up a gig.”
He slowly put down the flyer and took a sip of his coffee.
“Why do you ask?” I wondered aloud.
“Well, I’m in a band and we just started out a few months ago and we like to play at different places. Do you think we can perform for your supervisor when he gets back or I can drop off a tape of some songs we’ve done so we could possibly get a gig?”
As soon as I was about to respond to the beautiful man, my coworker had just busted through the door, rushing because she was late. But I didn’t care. No one except for mystery man had come into the shop this morning. Her name is Casey. She’s a sweetheart but she is just the most stressful person I had ever met, I have anxiety just being around her.
“How about I call my supervisor later today and see what he thinks about me putting my input and choosing our next show act for next weekend?” I shot him a smile shyly.
I really hope Nick lets me do this; I really want to hear this band of his. He smiled back and held out this hand for me to shake.
“My name is Gerard by the way and it was a pleasure meeting you” He said coolly and I shook his hand and we let go of each other’s hands quite slowly.
I didn’t know what to make of that awkward gesture we both went through. Ugh what the hell am I even thinking? This is just some random guy coming into a potential place to play at, he’s just introducing himself to someone that could set him up. He probably has a girlfriend and an awesome life going on with a million friends… I’m a very confident lady usually but this Gerard guy made me weak to my knees. I snapped back into reality.
“It was my pleasure as well; you definitely made my Friday morning a hell of a lot better.I’m Riley by the way.” I said shyly but keeping my cool.He pulled a scrap piece of paper out of his pocket , scribbled something on it and handed it to me.
“Here, if you could give me a call if you hear anything from your supervisor.”He smiled brightly. I took the piece of paper and placed it in my pocket.
“Thanks, yeah I’ll definitely let you know, Gerard.” He smiled again thinly and drank from his cup.“Well, I guess I’ll be hearing from you.It was nice to meet you, Riley.”
And with that, he left the shop. I went on with my day, worked as usual but I just had him on my mind all day. I’m really good with figuring out how people are, what they want from me. Whether it be a friendship, money, a “relationship” or simply just to talk because there is no one else to talk to. But with him…I just couldn’t get a hint.
“What’s up with you today?” Casey asked me once the shop was past its rush hour.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, you’ve been in this weird daze all day. Not that it’s a bad thing but it just seems like you’ve got a lot on your mind.” She wiggled her eyebrows.
Great I’m being obvious.
“No, I’ve just been thinking about a shoot that I’ve wanted to do and it’s a bit stressful.” I lied. Yeah, like I’m going to tell her my thoughts and feelings, yeah fucking right.
I left work around 2 to go home to go eat some lunch and get some rest before the show tonight at The Drip. I was shooting for this band tonight so I know I’ll need the energy. I got home, heated up some left overs, plopped myself on my couch and continued my “My So Called Life” marathon. Seriously I cannot get enough of this show, it’s so me.
