Die With Your Mask On.
Introductions.
Gerard sighed heavily as he thrusted his hardly packed duffel bag into Mikeys arms,
"It's fucking ridiculous." He drawled, crossing his arms as he threw a faltering glance in the direction of his mom who stood at the door,
"I'm not a fucking 'danger to society' or a fucking 'disaster waiting to happen' am I?! It's fucking stupid." Anger filled the black haired males stomach as he kicked out at the wooden frame of his bed. Gerard knew he wasn't crazy and that this was all just a misunderstanding but unfortunately no one else saw that. He'd spent the last 2 days under the watchful eyes of the government and wasn't allowed to sleep alone, eat alone, drink alone or even pee alone. It surprised him that shit like this was legal.
"It's only for a little while, depending on your progress." Mikey soothed, swinging the nearly empty pack over his shoulder. It wouldn't matter what Gerard had shoved in the bag, the institute would throw it out anyway. No personal belongings were allowed in there. Not even clothes or comics.
"Depending on my progress?! What the fuck am I suppose to be progressing in?!" The flustered male stamped his bare foot, skin slapping on wood as he winced.
"Gerard," his mother inturupted, surprising them both. She, out of everyone, had been the least supportive in this whole situation, in fact being the one who had reported her sons "strange" and "unusual" behaviour.
"I think you need to stop looking at the Hospital like its a bad thing, I personally think it will be a turning poi-"
"No one fucking cares!" Gerard screeched, grabbing his brothers spindly arm and tugging him down the stairs as he shouldered his guardian out of the way. They both paused, giving time for Mikey to slip his second-hand trainers on, before proceeding out of the open front door and towards the private mini-bus that had been sent for him.
"Ah, Gerard?" Asked a overly-formal voice. Gerard's eyes danced about the vehicle, settling on the open window and onto a face that looked soft but harsh at the same time,
"I'm Ray, you're "shrink" as some people call it."
Gerard frowned as he opened the back door, not replying as he turned his attention to the younger sibling that stood beside him,
"Hm, a quiet one eh?" Ray grinned and Gerard replied with a short grunt, snatching the bag from Mikeys arms as he stuffed it into an empty seat in the back of the van
"He's a little anti-social." Mikey's tone suggested that he was smiling and that annoyed Gerard even more,
"And you are?" Ray asked, his tone matching Mikeys almost too happy one,
"Mikey. Mikey Way. Musician, Asmatic and brother to a but case." Mikey joked and Gerard looked over his shoulder, dark, kohl lined eyes squinted into a glare as the two shook hands.
"When you two have stopped fucking flirting with each other over there I'd like to go. I want this experience to be over with as quickly as fucking possible." Gerard stated, slipping into the spare seat next to his bag and shoving his shins against the seat that Ray was sat in, propping himself into a comfortable position.
"Whatever you twat." Mikey grinned then peeled himself away from the front window and shuffled next to his brother,
"Hurry back Gee." He whispered, smiling softly as he pressed a kiss the side of Gerard's cheek. Melting slightly at the use of his childhood nick-name, Gerard turned to face his lanky sibling, offering what he hoped resembled a smile,
"See ya." He mumbled back, patting his brothers shoulder awkwardly,
"Tell mom not to visit." He added and slipped his hand into the handle, pulling it shut with a "thud" in Mikey's worried looking face. Removing his hand from the door, he clicked his seatbelt on then turned to his bag, rummaging around for his shitty iPod and equally bad headphones. On finding them, Gerard went through the small ritual of plugging his headphones in, turning the crappy device on, scrolling through his settings to select "play music", then having to spend 2 or 3 minutes fighting the volume button until he was sure his hearing wouldn't be too damaged by the sound pumping into them. By the time all of this had been done, Ray had started the car, exchanged goodbyes with a nervous Mikey, and drove off Gerard's shitty estate and onto the main road that lead both the men out of Gerard's hometown. Leaning his hair covered forehead against the cool window, Gerard closed his eyes, becoming lost in Tim Burtons, "This is Halloween."
Having drifted off at some point, Gerard woke with a start, his breathing fast and his head thrumming. He ripped the black pellets from his ears and winced as the roar of the engine filled his bruised drums.
"Fuck." He muttered, rubbing a hand across his sleep sealed eyes as he exhaled slowly.
"Rise and shine cupcake." Ray grinned, his eyes looking straight at Gerard through the rear-view mirror. Mumbling a "fuck off" Gerard rubbed his eyes again, looking out the window onto a road he didn't recognise.
"Where the fuck are we?" Gerard questioned as Ray clucked his tongue, tsking the same way Gerard's mom did when she was telling him off for something.
"You know? You really should try and swear less." Ray stated and the black haired teen puckered his brow,
"Pardon?"
"I'm just saying, the staff don't tend to appreciate foul language on any of the wards in the hospital so it'd make things easier for you if you learned to cuss less." Ray shrugged, his Afro bobbing slightly as he stole yet another smile covered glance at Gerard through the rear-view mirror.
"Whatever.." Gerard rolled his eyes to the heavens as his eyes followed the dirt track that ran beside the Tarmac they now drove on. He couldn't spot anything green, no grass or trees, in fact the only form of shrubbery in sight was the odd dead looking sprout that had somehow forced its way through the rock hard cake of mud that soiled the surface of this terrain.
"Honestly though Gerard," Ray persisted,
"If you're ever in the situation where its a choice between you or a non-swearer, the polite one will always be chosen." Gerard sucked his lip up and between his teeth, chewing slowly as he turned his head back to his hands. Wow, he really needed to redo his nails, the black paint had almost chipped off completely.
"Will they let me paint my nails in the Loony Bin?" Gerard questioned, flattening his hands out as to inspect the damage at a closer range.
"It's a Hospital and like I said, it depends on your behaviour though I doubt it because it is a poisonous substance and a privilege like that will have to be earned through you're white marks." Explained Ray,
"White marks?" Asked Gerard, curiosity pushing down his stubborn walls,
"You'll have a chart on your door. Every time you're well behaved and/or cooperate you get a white mark, every time you're badly behaved or step out of line you get a red mark. Simple really. The more white marks you get, the more privileges you get, for example you'll get your own clothing or you could get, like you said, a personal belong, so long as its meets the regulations." Ray rambled on some more about things you could earn or lose but Gerard had already shut off, his mind wandering to things that he felt to be more important.
"We're here!" Rays high pitch voice caused Gerard to jump out of his skin, not literally but he may had well have. His heart was racing, blood thrumming in his ears as his vision darted about the empty seats behind him and the spare one next to Ray. Suprises never appealed to Gerard, it was something about the shock that he didn't like, the fact that it was something unknown coming at him with no warning. Ray glanced back at Gerard, cocking an eyebrow as he bent down, reaching into something that rustled, hidden from Gerard's sight. As the younger male tried to gather his bearings, he took the time to look out of the still van window an take in the view. There was a large Victorian looking structure that spread across an open concrete field, the whole place concealed behind a four or five meter barbed wire fence. Swallowing heavily, Gerard did his best to ignore the "high voltage" signs that were placed so precariously along the grassy barrier in front of the fence.
"Here." Ray interrupted, his hand thrust in front of Gerard's face,
"Shit." Gerard gasped. Fuck, someone was jumpy today. Trying to cool himself once again, Gerard focused on the small pellets in Rays hand. One looked a lot like an aspirin and the other two were small, rounded pills shiny and sugar coated. Gerard shook his head,
"Fuck that. I haven't even got in there yet and you're already trying to dope me up!" He raised his hands, pushing Rays now balled fist away from his face. Ray shook his head, looking dead straight into Gerard's eyes, kind of unnerving the younger boy.
"Look, I've grasped the fact that you're a stubborn kid but please, you need to take this. You might not think you're sick but its not down to you. It's not even down to me. I'm just doing my job. So s take the pills now or they'll inject them into you when we get in their any way." Woah. Where'd that come from! Gerard froze,
"Inject?" His eyes widened, eye brows furrowing as he turned to the window then back to the now smug looking Ray,
"I'll- Just- Urgh!" Gerard shoved his hand out, grimacing as the three tablets rolled onto his hand.
"Water?" Ray smirked as Gerard nodded. The Afro of a man tossed a bottle of water into Gerard's hands and Gerard tilted his head back, consuming the pills with ease and a mouth full of the icy liquid.
"What now?" Gerard asked, coughing a little a he dropped the drink over the back of Rays seat and into the shrinks bag. Waiting for an answer, Gerard turned his attention back to the building, puckering his brow as he noted the bars that covered the windows. It was a hospital, not a prison. Right? The pucker deepened when he saw the whole left side of the beautiful building was boarded up, the intricately carved stone blackened with markings that looked like sloshes of black paint.
"We'll go park up, get you inside and changed. Then you can go and sit in the common room, meet some of the other patients and then we'll see how it goes from there. " Ray shrugged leaning out his now open window, his hand reaching out to press the name tag/security card to a machine that looked so out of place in the such a historic building.
"I meant the drugs." Gerard spat, crossing his arms as he ran his tongue across his teeth. They suddenly felt all furry, his fingers tingling like he'd been sat on them for the whole journey or something.
"Oh. That. Well there just little pick me ups, they'll help you socialise better but they'll keep," Ray paused to cough, braking eye contact with his patient as he searched for the right word,
"They'll keep them away."
Gerard rolled his eyes,
"Not. Fucking. Crazy!" he stated but Ray just brushed him off, turning his body back to the road as the large gates that were the same height as the fence swung open with a large "clunk". Starting the vans engine up again, Ray pulled up next to another few vans, pulling the keys out of the ignition and hoping out to help Gerard with his bags. Sliding the door open, Gerard also climbed out of the vehicle, his legs a little dead from being sat down for so long.
"This way." Ray swung Gerard's bag over his shoulder, gesturing for the smaller male to follow him up the stairs and towards the large wooden doors that separated Gerard from his last dregs of freedom. Eventually, Gerard reached the top step, Ray smiling at him as he chewed his lip,
"Ready?" Ray pushed the door open before Gerard could even reply and that was it. Gerard's whole life was about to be uncovered.
