Vampires Will Never Hurt You
The Kids of Yesterday
[Frank's P.O.V]
"Gerard! Wake up, you fuck!" I shouted as I jumped on top of the sleeping lump.
"FRANK, WHAT THE FUCK MAN!?" he shouted from beneath me.
"I told you to get up! After all, it's my birthday," I smirked, getting off the bed and standing at the foot of it.
"I don't care what day it is, waking up this early for you is unnecessary."
"You're unnecessary!"
"Good one," Gerard mumbled, shoving his face into the pillow.
He still didn't budge so I pulled the blankets off him and tossed them to the other side of the bed. The sudden cool air caused him to sit straight up and groan. I watched as he finally stood up and stumbled to the bathroom across the room. I waited until I could hear the water running and decided to go get breakfast. I flew down the stairs and went straight to the fridge, grabbing a juice box and a muffin from the basket in the centre of the table. Sitting on one of the bar stools, I popped the straw into the juice box and began to drink, cringing at the bitter taste. Peeling off the muffin wrapper, I took a huge bite, chewed and swallowed, nearly choking on a walnut. Coughing, Gerard shouted down the stairs.
"Don't die man!"
"Very funny," I said sarcastically in between coughs.
"Well, I'm going to pick up Chelsea and Tina. See ya tonight," Gerard said lifting his black leather jacket over his shoulders and adjusting the collar.
"Tell Jaime I said hi," I smiled. He looked up and smirked.
"Why don't you tell her yourself tonight at my place," he chuckled.
"All right, dick. I will," I chuckled, taking another bite of my muffin. Gerard laughed and grabbed his car keys off of the island counter and shut the door behind him, walking out to the car.
I finished my muffin and tossed the wrapper into the trash can under the counter, followed by my juice box. I closed my eyes and pictured Jaime's room; the faint smell of her coconut air freshener, the lime green walls with black paint splatters and her Nightmare Before Christmas bed set. I reopened my eyes and I was standing at the foot of Jaime's bed while she was looking at the pictures of the two of us together in Niagara Falls for her birthday last year.
"Happy Birthday, Frank," she whispered to the picture.
My chest began to ache. She turned away from the pictures and walked to the side of her bed and sat down, grabbing her phone in her hands. Staring down at the floor with her phone in her hands, she frowned and let out a deep breath. I took a step forward, wanting to hug her, but stopped. Suddenly she straightened her back and quickly looked over her left shoulder then quickly over her right shoulder towards the foot of the bed. Right where I was standing. She stared in my direction for a couple of seconds then quickly looked right back in front of her towards her computer desk. After a few moments, I could hear her mother coming up the stairs. The door knob turned and the door opened, blocking her mother from my view. Through the crack of the open door, I could make out her favourite aqua bath coat and white curlers in her hair- she was such an adorable woman. I loved her to bits.
"Are you okay, sweetie?" she asked Jaime, followed by the sound of a plastic basket being placed on the hardwood floor.
"What? Oh, yeah, I'm fine. Just had a weird feeling I wasn't alone," Jaime shrugged. "Must have sensed you in the hallway," she chuckled, walking towards her mother.
Jaime was now less then 6 feet away from me and I could smell her coconut shampoo as she walked. I could hear her subtle heart beat, the one that used to beat in sync with mine. I could almost feel the warmth of her skin as she stood there talking to her mother; unaware that I'm standing right here. 'I'm right here, Jaime. I'm always right here,' I wanted to say.
"Going to see Frank today?" Mrs. Smith asked.
"Yeah, Gerard and Tina are probably on their way right now."
"Good! Wish Frank a happy birthday for me?" Mrs. Smith asked again.
"Of course, mum," Jaime smiled a genuine smile.
As they continued to talk, I walked over to the window and saw Gerard's car coming from up the street. Mrs. Smith had closed the bedroom door and already walked back downstairs and Jaime had taken off her shirt to change into a clean one. I closed my eyes and pictured my tombstone.

I re-opened my eyes and looked around the cemetery. It was cloudy and empty. I crouched down in front of my own tombstone and sighed. Tracing my right index finger along my name engraved into the cold black marble, sorrow and anger began to flow through my veins. Why did that fucking idiot have to drive drunk? If he had any brain, I'd still be alive today. I would be celebrating my twenty-second birthday with my friends. My family. My girlfriend. I found myself clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth when I heard a car pull up behind me. I stood up and looked over my shoulder, seeing Gerard's black Honda civic pulling in. Jaime, Chelsea and Gee got out of the car and slowly began making their way towards where I stood. I looked over at the giant oak tree a couple of meters away from where I stood and made my way over to it. I stood next to it and watched as Jaime knelt in front of my tombstone, both knees in the long green grass.
"Happy birthday, Frank," she said as she knelt. "Tina and Gee are here too."
I looked at Gerard who was standing behind her just to her right. Even though I've been living with him for the past six months, right here, right now, he still looked so sad as he stared down at my tombstone. He had both of his hands folded into one another. Tina who was standing just to the left of Gerard had her mouth hidden behind her mittens as she watched Jaime trace the engraved letters and numbers. Jaime then looked down as she folded her hands in her knees and closed her eyes tightly.
"I promised myself I wouldn't cry," she choked, pushing her bangs to the side of her face.
I took a step forward wanting to embrace her but stopped. She looked back up to the tombstone, tears in her eyes and I had to look away. I looked down at my feet and began digging in the dirt with the tip of my raggedy converse. To see Jaime cry was always one of the hardest things to see. Especially when she was crying over me. I took a deep breath and continued looking down at my feet as Gerard and Tina took turns speaking to me.
"I love you, man," Gerard choked.
I finally looked up from my feet and watched as Gerard stood up and look in my general direction. He faintly smiled and helped Jaime up off the grass by lending her his hand. Tina hid her face in her hands as she wished me a happy birthday and made her way back up to the car behind Gerard, leaving Jaime standing in front of my tombstone. She wiped away another tear and I took another step forward, wanting to comfort her, but stopped. Jaime looked up and looked around quickly, but looked back down at my tombstone with a smile.
"Well Frankie, I just want you to know happy birthday and I love you so much."
She smiled and made her way to the car.
