In The Mourning
Part Thirteen
Two weeks had gone and Rebecca's condition only got a lot worse. It was either trips to the bathroom because she was throwing up a lot of she just sleeps all day. She did not talk much and she was always complaining of being thirsty. Rebecca's condition took its toll on my parents and as for, I stopped my daily activities to solely be with Rebecca. Frank called us twice a day just to check up on me and Rebecca and it was the last tour day. So he will be arriving any second now.
I was reading 'The Fault In Our Stars' by John Green to Rebecca.. I hesitated to read it but Rebecca wanted to finish the last few pages. The part when Augustus died, I choked up a little and I could feel her boney fingers squeezing mine.
"Blair.."
"Yes, Becca?", I put the book aside.
"Promise me you are going to be fine when I am gone?", she said, in a slow tone.
"Stop saying that, Becca"
She was laying on my bed and I laid beside her and hugged her. She smelled like a baby. Clean and fresh.
"I need to know that you are going to be fine when I am not here.. I cannot leave in peace if I know you'll be sad, just promise me that you are going to be ok?"
"I promise", I heavy-heartedly said.
Rebecca stopped talking after that, she was just staring at the ceiling and at times I could feel her hands stroking my head. She was tearing up and so was I but we just ignored each other, I knew I was making things hard for her and vice versa.
"How are my two favorite girls doing?", a familiar voice said as the door opened.
It was Frank. Rebecca didn't say anything and I got up a gave him a hug before returning back to Rebecca. Frank sat beside me and reached out and kissed her forehead. It wasn't long til Rebecca opened her eyes and smiled. Few seconds later, she fell asleep again.
"If it's okay with you, can I stay here tonight?", Frank asked.
I nodded, "Sure Frank, you can either sleep in Rebecca's room or one of the guest's rooms. It's way comfier than my couch"
Frank put his duffel bag down and said, "Nonsense, I will camp out on your couch. I left you for two weeks, not going to leave you tonight just because the couch is not comfortable. I lived in a bus for the past two weeks"
I just smiled and he kissed my forehead before setting up his own little nest at the corner of my room.
I wasn't sure how long it took me to finally fall asleep but it was around 3.30 AM when Rebecca woke me up and asked for water. I quickly rushed to the kitchen and made it back to my room. After she drank a glass of water, she fell asleep again. I looked at Frank and he was just there, sleeping in his little nest. Before falling asleep, Rebecca nudged my shoulder.
"Blair, hug me.. Cold", Rebecca said and I pulled up the comforter before hugging her.
And then, I fell asleep.
I woke up at 6.30 AM, it was extremely chilly and I went to the bathroom to wash my face and to get another blanket for Frank who looked like he could use some. Right after I covered him with a blanket. I went back to my bed to check up on Rebecca.
"Hey baby, how are you feeling", I said as I held her hands but she didn't move.
"Becca..", I shook her hands.
She just laid there, looking very pale. Her eyelids didn't move, so was her chest. She looked like she was sleeping but I couldn't hear her breathing. That was when I realized that she has left me, for good.
And I trembled.
