Cancer

My life has been hell, that may seem over dramatic but its the only way I can put it which seems accurate enough.
11 years ago I was diagnosed with leukemia, and since then my life has been protected by sterile walls and hovering nurses.
My name is Stephen Jones and this hospital is now my home. My family seem to have given up on me and so don't visit as often as they used to, but that's O.K., I prefer being on my own anyway.
I thought that this would be my life from now on. Until about a month ago I realised, I don't want to die. In the cancer ward I was surrounded by people who were dying, their negativity was getting to me so I decided to do something about it. I swung my pale sickly legs over the gurney, gathered up my tubes and monitors and limped to another ward, they found me crumpled on the ground gasping for air in one of the corridors, after that I was transported to the ICU where the nurses could keep constant watch on me, and that's where I stayed.
I was content here, or so I thought until one day in amongst the madness of the ward, I picked up some parts of a conversation about some man under intense surgery.
A couple of hours later a nurse walked over to me 'Stephen' she said 'we are going to place a very ill man next to you, and you have to promise me you will not bother him.'
' Duh, I'm not 12!' I thought angrily to myself , to the nurse I simply smiled and nodded in agreement seeing as I couldn't trust my self to say something polite.
About half an hour later the nurse returned but this time wheeling a gurney with a tall, pale man on it. He was placed in the spot next to mine as the nurse buzzed around getting his monitors working.
But I could not focus on her, my attention was constantly drawn to this man with the high cheekbones, the sculpted chin and fiery red hair. He looked about the same age as me and was clearly still in a trance from the pain meds he was on and so could not focus on anything in particular, but those hazel eyes, I had never seen any like them, his face was covered in cuts, only a couple had needs stitches though, and there was large bruises on his cheek and above his eye.
'Stephen,' the nurse snapped me back to reality 'this is 'Mr Way'' she read from her clip board, 'he has just had intensive surgery and should not be disturbed at all. He is a very important man and should be treated like one.'
I mock saluted her with my free arm which earned me a grim look, but smiles from everyone else on the ward that was conscious.
After that she hurried off to attend to other patients on the ward. I nestled into my sheets and curled into as much of a ball as my frail bones would allow and drifted off to sleep.
I awoke two hours later and wiggled to poke my head out from under the sheets, when I did eventually escape from my nest of sheets, I found the red haired man grinning at me.
I eventually got myself sitting up and managed to shift my mouth into a semi normal smile. That was when he reached across the gap with his tired arm and offered me his hand to shake, 'Gerard' he introduced. His voice had an American accent and was a bit high pitched, but still it was smooth and strong.
'Stephen' I returned as I took his hand in my weak grasp, this gained me another of his shocking grins which filled his face.
'Nice to meet you Stephen, I hope we can help each other through this.' at this he lay back and shut his eyes, clearly letting his exhausted body take control.

Hiya! This is one of my first fan fictions and so its probably not very good, I will try and make the next chapter more interesting than this one as next chapter sort of shifts the story a bit :)
