You're The Only Hope For Me

Chapter 3

After about twenty minutes of driving through some rather unappealing countryside listening to Green Day and Black Flag whilst Frank sang loudly, they had turned down several country lanes and the setting had abruptly changed. The dusty cracked dirt tracks had become smooth one-way roads and the dirt fields had changed to one filled with crops and flowers. There were animals in some of them as well as farmers working, all the people they passed waved or shouted a greeting at them and Frank always shouted back.
They drove on along a pleasant road until they were about 10 minutes away from the houses and fields that they had passed, turned into a driveway and pulled up beside the villa, which was obviously Frank’s home. Hazel noticed it was quite a large house and wondered if he lived with anyone, besides his dogs. She felt nervous at the thought of Frank having to explain to everyone he lived with exactly who this girl was, why she was with him, and why she was in such a mess.
"Do you live alone or have you got a girlfriend or anyone?" Hazel asked when Time Of My Life finally ended as Frank turned off the CD and cut the engine.
"Not anymore." Frank replied, sounding slightly wistful.
"How? What happened?" Hazel asked, feeling slightly intrusive. Of course she wanted to know and was curious, but she felt she might be trespassing on a part of Frank's life that she wasn't welcome to. Especially since she'd only met him a few hours back.
Frank sighed in response, "We had been together a few months, she was great, she made me great, it was great. Then something happened which made things a bit complicated. See, I've always been bisexual right? And she knew that, and she accepted that. Though there was one time me and my best friend were just hanging out, completely pissed and high and you know the like, and he just came at me and kissed me. Proper full on fucking kissed me. To tell the truth, I actually quite liked it. Now I know that he's bisexual as well so I thought that maybe, just maybe this was going to become something and I was kinda looking forward to it. When I was drunk I seemed to just forget about her for whatever reason, probably just because I was having such a laugh with this guy and she wasn’t there with us. Then another time he was round at mine and was completely pissed again, see he had a bit of a drinking problem for a while, and you know soon enough we were making out again, and my girlfriend sorta walked in and saw us. And yeah," he laughed a little, but in a bitter way, "Yeah, she kinda freaked. I tried to explain myself but she wouldn't listen, she just wouldn't have it. So she said it was either her or him, I told her that it wasn't like that, and she just left me." He sighed again and looked down as he stopped the engine.
"Oh," Hazel wasn't quite sure what to say, "I'm really sorry."
"Nah don't be," Frank said in response, "It's not your fault, there's nothing you can do about it anyway. In fact, if it's anyone's fault, it's my own."
"Aww that's not true!" Hazel exclaimed "You didn't ask him to kiss you!"
"No, but he did have an alcohol addiction. It wasn't his fault he was always completely pissed out his brain and had no idea what he was doing. I should have broken away from him, I should have ended it, not encouraged it, I should have thought about my girlfriend and maybe then I wouldn't have been so stupid." Frank sighed again, "Anyway, it's in the past and there's nothing I can do about it now either."
"Do you miss her?" Hazel asked cautiously, not wanting to make him angry, or even worse, upset.
"Sometimes," he answered, "But only in the fact that I used to have someone who loved me and cared about me, and now I don't. I don't ever get lonely though, I mean I've always got my dogs and they're about as loyal as anything can get! I can screw up all I want, and for all the world they'll still love me! God I don't deserve those animals.”
He tailed off, but the happy smile restored onto his face. Hazel looked at him and smiled too, she had never though before that you could describe a man as 'beautiful', but now she was definitely sure you could.
He turned to her, the smile still upon his face, "Anyway," he grinned even more "Do you want to see my house?"
Hazel looked at him, "But of course I do!"
"We'll come on then," he opened the door and hopped out, "Let’s go!"
Hazel made to get out but he went "No no no no no no no!" and walked round to open the door and help her out.
This guy was just so sweet!
His house was amazing too; the rooms, the furniture and ornaments inside the rooms, the garden, the scenery, it was all just simply beautiful.
“Just like him.” The thought made Hazel smile, “True though.” She added, in her head.
The villa was only one floor but with a cellar type room you entered through a door and staircase in the kitchen, it was spacious and spread underneath the course of at least three rooms. This room had been rigged up with microphones and amplifiers so that a band could play there. There were bright lights that hung from the ceiling and posters of rock, metal, punk and alternative bands on the stone walls. There were various types of guitars hanging on stands and a keyboard was set in the far corner. Hazel was quite impressed with the whole thing and even more so when Frank explained that having the music room underground meant that the rock absorbed the sounds which allowed him to play loudly without disturbing anyone nearby.
There was a modern kitchen with appliances lining the walls and a high counter which you could sit at on high chairs which spun. A change of carpet halfway across the room was obviously the dining room due to the fact that it had a table in the middle, however, it wasn’t really the dining room because it was in the same room as the kitchen appliances. The table was set with cutlery and a vase of flowers in the middle upon a white doily.
The sitting room was large and spacious, also very modern and comfortable looking. Various types and colours of sofas were all positioned around a coffee table and several arm chairs were scattered about. There was a state of the art stereo system and a large flat screen TV. A large window took up an entire wall, giving a lovely view over the countryside.
The main bedroom was Frank's and he allowed her a quick look inside, she caught a glimpse of an untidy room with a large unmade bed before her shut the door, muttering "sorry for the mess."
There were two spare bedrooms, both large and bright with fresh flowers and large windows, set in pastel colours. The beds were large and complete with numerous pillows whilst in the corner of each was an en-suite bathroom, tiled with a mosaic of every shade of blue.
The main bathroom was mainly the same, except larger with a large frosted glass window across one of the walls. The bath was large and various taps were available, it reminded Hazel of reading about the bath in the prefect’s bathroom in Harry Potter and she smiled in her head. The shower was large, and also interesting with a main shower head and jets of water which sprayed from all directions, from the wheel she saw you could turn it from mild to normal to power shower.
The garden was like any other garden, except more beautiful with large green lawns and flowers of every shade.
Round the other side of the house there was a swimming pool, featuring two diving boards - one just above water level and the other a few meters higher. The tiles were a bright blue shade with glitter in them which made them sparkle in the sunlight. Beside the pool there were two tables with umbrellas, a barbecue and slightly further away a hot tub large enough for eight people at least.
And oh the dogs! Hazel had always been a dog lover and these dogs only made her love the creatures even more. Not only were they beautiful creatures in themselves but the amount of love and care they were given just warmed her heart. When Hazel and Frank had arrived in the door they had all run towards them and jumped onto Frank, licking his face and making him laugh.
"How many have you got?" Hazel asked, laughing as they barked excitedly at his return.
"Currently twelve," he replied, also laughing from underneath the hairy mass, "but that could change at any time!"
After the ‘tour’, Hazel helped Frank to feed the dogs then the two of them sat at the high counter in the kitchen and drank hot chocolate.
"So what are you wanting to do this afternoon?" Frank asked her as they sipped their drinks.
"Is it not even afternoon yet?" Hazel asked, surprised. She had obviously lost track of time after being knocked out by that drug. How long had those men had her for?
"Well it is actually," Frank looked at the clock behind him, "as of three minutes that is."
"Oh right, okay then." Hazel replied distantly as she tried to comprehend this knowledge.
"Well anyway," Frank looked at her for approval, "I was thinking we could maybe hit the street? You know, do some shopping? I need to buy food and stuffs, and you could get clothes and all if you like?"
"Shopping?" Hazel asked, again slightly surprised by the suggestion.
"Yes. Shopping." Frank replied with that grin on his face, before adding hastily, “Unless you’d rather rest and all, I’d completely understand if you would because-”
"But I don't have any money." Hazel protested, cutting him off.
"You don't need it," Frank smiled, "I was going to treat you to it anyway."
"Oh" Hazel looked downwards, this guy was really lovely but she didn't think she'd be able to cope with that, she'd just feel like she needed to pay him back for it and she hated the feeling of being in debt.
"No, Hazel, it's fine, honestly," He looked her right in the eyes and she noticed for the first time that he had a thin amount of eyeliner around each one, then she got lost in there green depths again. "I have an awful lot of money, not trying to brag or anything but it is true. I don't always know what to do with it so taking you shopping would be good fun for me as well, I enjoy making others happy." He then lost his serious tone and laughed a bit, "Also no offence, but my very small knowledge of fashion tells me that wearing dirty tank tops and ripped leggings hasn't been fashionable. Ever."
Despite herself Hazel laughed too, Frank was right and he was trying to be kind to her, she wouldn't be able to turn down an invitation like that.
They both finished drinking and then Frank ditched their cups in the sink, grabbed his car keys and put on his shoes. The sun had gone in a bit and there was a slight chill to the air so Frank gave Hazel a hoodie to wear. It was too big for her, coming down to halfway down her thighs and the sleeves covering her hands, but she liked it. It made her feel safe and warm and loved. It also smelt like Frank and she liked that too, she liked his scent though she couldn't have described what it smelt like, all she knew was that the hoodie smelt of him and she liked it.
Once they were ready, they stepped outside and Frank smiled at her as he locked the door.
